Kent Senior Cup

Dover Athletic v Folkestone Invicta

DOVER crashed out of the Kent Reliance Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage after being hit for six by local neighbours Folkestone Invicta at Crabble on Monday night.

Johan Ter Horst, Josh Vincent, Kieron McCann and Joe Taylor were all on the scoresheet as Invicta proved too much for a Dover side featuring a number of academy players.

Chris Kinnear’s side made the worst possible start as Maidstone loanee Ter Horst rose highest to head Jordan Wright’s cross past home stopper Chris Lewington.

Ronnie Dolan’s free-kick deflected narrowly wide for the visitors, but the lead was doubled from the resultant corner.

Defender Vincent jumped above the Dover defence to nod in Heard’s set-piece and leave Athletic with a tough task ahead.

Lewington blocked Wright’s close-range effort and James Alabi’s swivel and shot was palmed away by visiting keeper Nick Shaw.

And Whites defence of the cup was all but over after Folkestone netted twice more before the break.

McCann slotted Ryan Cooper’s back-post centre and Taylor chipped in after Wright tackled Kyron Connelly and passed to the striker.

Alabi nodded over sub Jack Smith’s assist and Kane Richards volleyed wide when found in space.

But the Bostik Premier side extended their lead once more as Taylor slotted in his second from the spot after Loui Fazakerley fouled Ter Horst in the box.

Alabi was denied a consolation by the inside of the post following a surging run with Folkestone wrapping up their scoring soon after.

Ter Horst poked in his second of the match following good work by Heard out wide.

Lewington dived onto sub Sam Hasler’s low free-kick, but his save was of little consequence as Folkestone comfortably progressed to the semi-finals.

Earlier, boss Kinnear changed the entire starting line-up from Saturday’s draw at Bromley.

Dover next host Hartlepool on Saturday in the league. Kick off 3pm.

Dover Athletic v Sittingbourne

CHRIS Lewington was the hero as Whites edged past Sittingbourne on penalties to advance onto the next round of the Kent Reliance Senior cup.

Dover’s keeper saved spot kicks from Tom Loynes and Mobalasi Dawodu as 10-man Athletic, the defending champions, won the shootout 4-1 after the second round tie ended 2-2 draw in normal time.

Chris Kinnear’s side also finished the game a man light after Aziz Deen-Conteh was shown a second yellow card in injury time.

Whites started brightly with Kane Richards cutting inside and firing straight at visiting keeper Harry Brooks early on.

But his effort was merely a warning shot and the winger opened the scoring on 22 minutes.

Jamie Allen collected the ball out wide and passed inside for Tobi Sho-Silva to tuck the ball into the bottom corner, via a slight deflection of Richards.

Debutant Lewington was called into action on the half-hour mark for the home side, beating away Ade Batula’s fierce drive, then denying Chris Webber with an identical block when the ball rebounded to the defender.

The home stopper then spectacularly tipped over Tom Loynes curling effort after the winger cut inside Chris Barnard.

David Smith fired narrowly wide from an angle for the visitors and Brooks palmed Oliver Muldoon’s volley around the post after Deen-Conteh’s run and cross.

But Sittingbourne were deservedly level eight minutes after the break. Webber’s set-piece found Dawodu free in the box to head home.

Brooks had to be alert to deny Deen-Conteh at his near post and George Essuman nodded the resulting corner over the bar.

Sho-Silva headed Richards’ cross at Brooks and the visiting keeper was off his line quickly to beat Barnard to a loose ball soon after.

Smith fired wide once again as did Essuman at the other end, striking the side netting after Brooks’ punch from Deen-Conteh’s initial shot fell for the centre back.

The Brickies goalie also showed good agility to tip over Allen’s powerful drive from an angle.

The turnaround was complete on 78 minutes, sub Kane Rowland capitalised on Essuman’s error and fired home via the post.

But the visitors could only hold on to their lead for four minutes as Deen-Conteh curled a free-kick into the top corner before his evening turned sour after the referee gave the defender his marching orders following a rash challenge.

But the 10-men held firm until the final whistle, winning the shootout thanks to Lewington’s heroics.

Earlier, Kinnear made 11 changes to the side that started the 4-0 home win over Chester last weekend.

Whites are back in league action this Saturday when they travel to Guiseley. Kick off 3 pm.

Dover Athletic v Welling United

ROSS Lafayette and Aswad Thomas scored the goals as Dover beat Welling United 2-0 to win the Kent Reliance Senior Cup final at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium on Monday.

It was the first time Dover have won the cup since 1991 and they did it without conceding a goal along the way.

To complete a memorable day for Dover captain Loui Fazakerley, who was playing against his former club, he was named Man-of-the-Match.

Dover started brightly against the National League South side and Moses Emmanuel, one of the three changes boss Chris Kinnear made to his starting side following Saturday’s win at Barrow AFC, was soon in action.

He had the first effort of the day with his shot easily gathered by goalkeeper Chris Lewington before Mitch Pinnock’s 25-yarder flew just over the Welling bar.

Dover goalkeeper Mitch Walker was called into action not long after, diving low to his left to turn Ali Fuseni’s shot away for a corner.

Back at the other end, Thomas saw his header from Sam Magri’s cross easily caught by Lewington.

Walker then saved from his Wings namesake Darren and Tom Richards before Sam Hatton’s drive whistled inches wide of the Dover goal.

Lewington needed to be alert after Emmanuel charged down Danny Waldron’s clearance and the keeper won the foot race with the Dover frontman to the loose ball.

Welling had the first chance of the second half with Alex Cathline turning well in Dover’s box before seeing his shot saved at close range by Walker moments after the restart.

The deadlock was broken in the 54th minute and it stunning style by Lafayette.

His curling 25-yarder gave Lewington no chance as it flew into the top corner of the goal in front of the Dover fans.

Welling saw efforts from Hatton and Ricky Hayles fly well wide before Walker safely caught former Dover striker Harry Crawford’s shot.

Walker saved from Walker again before substitute Peter Skapetis’ overhead kick went close just after the Australian striker came on for his Dover debut.

Magri saw his header from Joe Healy’s corner saved by Lewington as Whites pressed for a second.

Thomas delivered it with three minutes to go when he headed home Healy’s cross.

Earlier, Kinnear had to make three enforced changes.

Jamie Grimes and Ricky Miller missed out through injury while Connor Essam’s loan deal from Eastleigh had ended.

They were replaced by Fazakerley, Pinnock and Emmanuel.

Dover Athletic v Folkestone Invicta

JAMES Caton’s stunning strike sealed Dover’s place in the final of the Kent Reliance Senior Cup after beating neighbours Folkestone Invicta at Crabble on Monday night

Whites led 1-0 at half-time through Moses Emmanuel before Bondz N’Gala headed home his first for the club and Caton wrapped it up with a thunderous strike.

They were the first goals that the Ryman League Premier Division side had conceded in the competition.

The visitors started brightly and Ian Draycott tried his luck early on but blazed well over Mitch Walker’s goal from the edge of the area.

Dover responded with Ricky Miller’s free-kick curling past the upright after the striker had been felled by Samuel Beale inches outside the box.

The 30 goal hit-man, suspended for the next two games following his booking in the previous match with Solihull Moors, then laid the ball off for Mitch Pinnock, who struck a left-foot effort wide.

Tyrone Sterling headed over Emmanuel’s cross before Dover had three shots on goal in as many seconds.

Miller wriggled free of the Folkestone defence and saw his shot parried by Tim Roberts, Emmanuel’s follow up was cleared off the line before the rebound fell kindly for Caton to strike, but his effort was comfortably saved by the visiting keeper.

Emmanuel eventually gave Dover the lead in the 38th minute when he pounced on a poor back pass to run clear and fire past Roberts.

Draycott fired a free-kick narrowly over as Invicta went for an instant reply.

Dover continued to press after half-time and Pinnock’s delivery was headed towards Emmanuel by Connor Essam, but the striker scuffed his effort when well placed.

Whites doubled their lead 11 minutes after the break, when centre back N’Gala, one of two players from Saturday’s starting side playing, powerfully head home Pinnock’s corner.

Jordan Wright’s jinxing run and shot deflected just over before Draycott’s effort rolled just wide.

Miller blasted over James Hurst’s accurate centre and then smashed a volley just over the upright as Dover looked to make the game safe.

Hurst then headed Pinnock’s set-piece directly at Roberts as the home side continued to create chances.

Miller’s darting run and shot flew wide and Roberts did well to block Emmanuel’s shot after Caton’s pass put him clear.

Caton sealed the win in style after he evaded two challenges and smashed a shot into the top corner.

The contest may have been over, but the action continued right until the final whistle.

Walker saved Draycott’s volley before Hurst whistled an effort past the post and Essam had a header cleared off the line.

Boss Chris Kinnear’s side will play either Bromley, Welling or Charlton in the decider.

Bromley and Welling play their quarter-final tie on Tuesday, with the winner facing Charlton.

Dover Athletic v VCD Athletic

NEW signing James Caton marked an impressive debut with a goal as Dover reached the semi-finals of the Kent Reliance Senior Cup after beating Ryman League North side VCD Athletic at Crabble on Monday night.

Moses Emmanuel’s second-half header put Dover ahead before further goals from Connor Essam, Caton and Ira Jackson jnr sealed the win.

But VCD, who had lost their past five league games, didn’t let the hosts have it all their own way.

They started brightly and it needed a smart save from Mitch Walker to turn Victor Caicedo’s shot away.

Dover replied with Emmanuel heading a cross from James Hurst straight at visiting keeper Niklas Freund, son of former Tottenham and Leicester midfielder Steffen.

Hurst then tried his luck with a snap volley, but his effort flew harmlessly over.

Emmanuel found Jim Stevenson with a clever pass, but the ball was taken off the midfielder’s toes before he could shoot.

Former Shrewsbury Town man Caton, sparkling on his first start, unleashed a fierce volley which just cleared the crossbar.

A poor defensive clearance let Emmanuel through on goal, but his audacious chip sailed narrowly wide.

Lewis Perkins’ smart turn and shot was well held by a diving Walker.

Walker then spectacularly denied Caceido with a fingertip save after the visiting striker pounced on captain Loui Fazakerley’s weak back pass.

Mitch Pinnock’s curling free-kick just before half-time flew the wrong side of the post as Whites ended a dominant first half performance without a goal.

Whites stayed on the attack after the break and Hurst saw his header easily gathered by Freund.

A lightning counter-attack started by Emmanuel found Jackson bearing down on goal, but his snatched effort went wide.

Dover finally made the pressure pay when Emmanuel opened the scoring in the 65th  minute, bravely heading home Hurst’s cross.

Whites doubled their lead five minutes later in spectacular fashion thanks to substitute Essam.

Hurst sent another set-piece into the box and the centre back, who had his back to goal, turned and fired past Freund.

The goalkeeper soon found himself stranded again moments later but was relieved to see Emmanuel’s lob hit the top of the net.

It was soon 3-0 after Caton’s trickery proved too much for the VCD defence as he was bundled over in the penalty area.

Caton picked himself up to dispatch the spot kick low past Freund.

Jackson, who has returned to Crabble after a loan spell at Margate, rounded things off with a stunning 25-yard strike in stoppage time.

Bromley or Welling, who play each other next week, Charlton Athletic and Folkestone are the other sides left in the competition.
