DOVER ATHLETIC 1 OXFORD CITY 5

City slickers in the Dover sun.

It was a tough day at the office for Mitch Brundle and his charges despite starting the game on the front foot. The hosts took an early lead through Josh Ajayi who’s neat finish rounded off a quick break. Alfie Paxman drove the ball at Chris Haigh in the Oxford City goal who parried the ball back into the path of Ajayi to give Dover the lead.

It was a false dawn for the Whites as moments later, Zak McEachran came close with a shot that flashed just wide of Stuart Nelson’s post. The away side had the wind in their sails and in the 18th minute, equalised from a corner when Humphrey Ewers waltzed into the box, controlled the ball and fired past the Dover stopper.

Just after the half hour mark and the visitors were in front. The ball played into Ajayi deep into the Oxford half didn’t stick and just three passes later, Nelson was again picking the ball out of his net. It was a clinical counter that winded the Whites who looked punch drunk going into the break.

It was a knock-out blow that had the Whites reeling as just 60 seconds after the restart, Dover had a mountain to climb when the impressive McEachran made it 3-1. By this time it all started to unravel for the home side. Oxford played some decent stuff, which shows their league placing is on merit.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Dover who could of closed the gap but George Nikaj, who was put through on goal, could only fire wide. Moments later, Luke Wanadio turned his marker inside out as he twisted one way and then the other, only to fire across goal and out for a goal kick.

On the 70th minute mark, the Gaffer stripped off his training top and entered the fray in the hope of inspiring a resurgence. Instead the Whites defence was breached again when Oxford substitute Lolos fired home with Dover unable to clear their lines defending a corner.

It got even worse as the game as a contest was all but over when Stuart Nelson brought down an Oxford forward in the box. Lolos placed the ball on the spot and sent Nelson the wrong way. Oxford enjoyed their trip to the south coast whereas it was back to the drawing board for the boss with a massive game now on Tuesday night at Concord Rangers.

As ever we hope to see as many of you there to give the lads a push.

UP NEXT – OXFORD CITY

Oxford City head to Crabble.

The Whites face the Hoops in our penultimate home match of the 2022/23 campaign, looking to avenge the 3-1 defeat earlier on in the season. City will be looking to cement a place in the play-off spots with Ebbsfleet already guaranteed one promotion place following their league title claim from last weekend.

Mitch Brundle’s side will be looking to keep one step ahead of the relegation rivals, something the boss has been keen to speak about on numerous occasions. ‘I won’t really be happy until i see four teams with R next to their name so we will keep going,’ said the Gaffer.

Tyrone Sterling completed his ban so is now available for selection which could give the boss a selection dilemma with a fully fit squad at his disposal. Speaking to Kent Online Sport, Brundle said ‘That’s the best thing at the minute because it’s getting towards the end of the season and everyone is fit. Everyone’s trying to fight for their contracts for next year. We’ve had a full-strength squad.’

Opposition boss Ross Jenkins has placed the emphasis on remembering the performance last time out against the Whites. Speaking to his clubs website he said ‘It’s important we replicate our performance in the reverse fixture at their place. It’s a long journey but we’ve got to get on with it and we’ll prepare as normal and get ready for a good game of football. There’s no fear on their behalf. However, it’s important that we don’t focus on that. They’ll do what they can do and we’ll try and do what we’re best at and what we’ve been doing all season and try and get a result there.’

Oxford City Form Guide:

Head to Head:

The two sides have met twice in the last ten years with both claiming a win each. Dover advanced to the next round of the FA Cup back in 2013 courtesy of a 3-0 win here at Crabble. The Hoops won more recently, at the start of this campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory.

DARTFORD 2 DOVER ATHLETIC 1

Dover dealt a Bank Holiday blow.

It wasn’t the ideal start for the Whites as after just four minutes, Harvey Bradbury fired the hosts into the lead with Dover unable to clear their lines.

Despite the early setback, the visitors grew into the game with some neat and tidy possession and could have scored when Jordan Higgs fired his shot against a defender on the goal line after good work by Pierrick down the left hand side.

Dartford had the ball in the net again in the 18th minute when Nelson spilled a long range effort and a Darts forward tucked away the rebound but the linesman’s flag cut short any celebrations. Moments later and Joshua Ajayi spun his man but could only send his volleyed effort into the away fans behind the goal.

In the 28th minute, Lee Martin looked to have been fouled in the box but the referee was having none of it and awarded the Whites a corner. The ball was swung in and Jordan Higgs planted a bullet header into the Dartford goal.

Once Dover had equalised the game seemed to become a scrappy affair, with both sides trying to get hold of the ball.

In the second half Dover pressed forward early on but it was the hosts who took the lead when Luke Allen curled in a 20 yarder. It looked like a foul on Jordan Higgs in the build up but the referee opted to play on. It was costly for the Whites as seconds later the ball was in the net.

Luke Wanadio sent a cross come shot sailing over the crossbar but it wasn’t to be in the second period with the Whites beginning to look tired.

Defeat in Dartford is not going to define this season. We now look ahead to a home game against Oxford City.

IRONS IRONED OUT – MANAGERS REACTION

The Gaffer has his say on the weekends victory.

It was a result that was greeted by both relief and joy as the Whites headed to Braintree and hopped back on the bus with three points in tow. The Iron had only lost once previously on home soil and with Dover out of sorts, bringing home the bacon was a tough ask but the lads stepped up to the challenge and delivered when it was necessary.

Despite a shaky opening fifteen minutes, the Whites rallied to put on a defensive masterclass with a ‘never say die’ attitude. The backline of Boateng, Moses, Janjeva, Paxman, Nelson and even midfielder Jordan Higgs, were absolute warriors in the last half hour of the match. Wave after wave of Braintree attack rained down on the Dover goal but the guys held firm and eventually got their rewards.

‘It wasn’t our best performance,’ said the Gaffer post match. ‘Attacking wise it was the most dangerous we have looked over the last few games and the lads have worked their absolute socks off. We rode our luck at time but that comes from hard work. We were lucky with the offside goal at the death but we got into some really good areas which is what we haven’t done of late. Look, off the ball I couldn’t fault the effort and willingness to shut people down. They are a good team. They are where they are in the table because Angelo Harrop has them playing a certain way.

Football’s up and down. We went from six unbeaten to not being able to buy a win and all of a sudden we are turning over a play off chasing team away. It just shows you that you cannot get too high or too low. The lads enjoyed today, they expressed themselves which is how we want to play football. I want the lads to attack and excite me.’

Two goals from Luke Wanadio and a maiden goal for Brandon Pierrick sealed an impressive 3-1 victory over Braintree but it was the defensive performance that raised a smile from the boss. ‘There was a five minute spell where Higgsy, everywhere the ball was he was there, like a magnet. But the defence started from the front, I thought Marts run himself into the ground playing a slightly higher position than normal. When you are watching its these little things that you might not notice and think that he’s not actually doing anything but what it does do is relieve pressure from our back four.

Brandon was excellent today as well as Wads. This is the highs and lows of football. With Wads he scores a fantastic goal, a great finish and then he doesn’t clear his lines which leads to their equaliser. He said at half-time “Boys I let you down on that one but I am going to get us back into this game” which he did. He was fantastic. I cant fault any of them. Andi and Moses were superb as was Freddie. I could go through the whole team, Boateng, Pax, Nels in terms of the saves he made.

We rode our luck but it was due to hard work and I’m glad thats the way its worked out. Lets enjoy this one.’

BRAINTREE TOWN 1 DOVER ATHLETIC 3

Whites win after heroic performance.

It was a first half of missed chances for the hosts, with Dover taking theirs as the sides played out an entertaining opening 45 minutes.

A terrible mistake from Will Mosses let in the Iron’s forward who rounded Nelson, only to strike it against the foot of the post.

Moments later and Braintree were in again with the Dover defence unable to clear and with Nelson being closed down and dispossessed on the edge of his penalty area, the hosts could only fire agonisingly wide.

The onslaught continued with Braintree again coming close in the 8th minute with Aaron Blair firing agonisingly over.

After the initial blitz, Dover started to grow into the game and in the 25th minute took the lead through some neat build up play resulting in Luke Wanadio gliding towards the edge of the box and firing into the far bottom corner. It was an absolute stunner.

Lee Martin could have doubled the Whites lead but a fine save from Jack Sims kept the hosts down to a 0-1 score line which proved pivotal moments later as the goal scorer for the Whites was caught on his heels trying to clear his lines in the right back position only for the ball to fall to Alfie Matthews who fired the hosts level. It was a fantastic equaliser just before the break.

While it was all square at half-time, Braintree had enough chances to be in front.

Both sides enjoyed neat spells of possession In the early periods of the second half with first Wanadio firing across the hosts goal, but there was no one to capitalise for the visitors.

Baris Altintop should have put the Iron in front in the 63rd minute when a free-kick in the penalty area dropped to the skipper, who fired over the crossbar from six yards out.

Moments later and the impressive Blair, weaved his way into the Dover box, but his curling shot was inches wide.

In the 73rd minute, Dover took the lead. A neat build up between Wanadio and Boateng resulted in the former lashing a shot at Sims who parried out for Brandon Pierrick to lash into the net. The travelling Whites were sent wild.

With ten minutes remaining, it was penalty box fury as Dover battled to clear their lines with first Boateng throwing his body to save a goal and then hooking off the line. From the resulting corner, Higgs headed away as a Braintree player looked to nod home.

Nelson then punched the next corner clear to ensure the barrage was seen off. It was real backs to the wall defending.

It was one fine block after another as with the referee signalling five minutes of added time, Jordan Higgs cleared the ball off the line in heroic fashion.

Braintree thought they had an equaliser but the linesman ruled out the equaliser in the 94th minute. Seconds later and Dover had a penalty. Pierrick was clumsily fouled in the box and Wanadio despatched at the second attempt. 3-1 and a job done.

It was a fantastic defensive display. Get in!

UP NEXT – BRAINTREE TOWN

The Whites head to Essex to take on Braintree.

Mitch Brundle takes his Dover side to Essex this weekend in a bid to stop a run of five consecutive defeats after only losing once in the previous eight matches prior to the 3-0 loss at home to Cheshunt.

The Whites romped to a 3-1 victory over the Iron in October and hold a pretty decent record over the hosts, winning four of the last five meetings, including a 6-1 drubbing courtesy of four Ricky Miller goals back in 2016.

Braintree are chasing a play off birth and despite their shock defeat to Taunton last time out, will be formidable opponents. Tyrone Sterling and Myles Judd could miss out through suspension but skipper Lee Martin and Jordan Higgs will return from their two match bans. Speaking to Kent Online Sport the Gaffer said ‘Martin and Higgs strengthen our midfield and you’re going to lose players but, hopefully, people stand up. Once you bring players into the first-team, including from the Academy, it’s only right that you use them. Some of the boys step up, like Freddie Oliver has done. Sometimes, you find little gems underneath your noses that you didn’t know about.’

The boss had his eyes firmly set on the fixture in hand amidst calls of a return of Alfie Pavey to haunt the Whites but unfortunately the forward misses out through suspension. ‘People might not know but me and Pavey have been friends for a very long time. He’s a fantastic player. When you play to his strengths, his goalscoring record speaks for itself. He would have wanted to play against his old team. Personally, I’m not going back there as a player, I’m going back as a manager. I loved it there, it’s where I broke through, really, but we’ll try to earn three points.’

NON LEAGUE DAY 2023 – GET INVOLVED

The Whites head to St Albans this Saturday for Non League Day.

This weekend sees the return of Non League Day, the annual celebration of all things Non League and we hope that you can come and celebrate with us. This Saturday the Whites head to St Albans, looking to get back to winning ways, so why not come and cheer on the lads in what is now a pivotal time in our season. With the international break halting top level football, this is a great chance to come and support your local team.

So what is Non League day?

Non-League Day was set up by James Doe in 2010 as a social media experiment, after being inspired by a pre-season trip to Devon to watch Queens Park Rangers play at Tavistock. It has now grown to become an annual part of the football calendar, backed by Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the non-league clubs themselves and the fans who turn up on the day.

Always scheduled to coincide with an international break, Non-League Day provides a platform for clubs to promote the importance of affordable volunteer-led community football while giving fans across the country the chance to show support for their local non-league side.

Many non-league clubs are almost exclusively volunteer run, with money taken at the turnstiles often funding thriving youth set-ups, projects and facilities which are of benefit to the whole community. The level of skill on offer at non-league grounds might not be the same as that at the Etihad Stadium or Stamford Bridge, for example, but there are other sides to the experience, from which the smaller club will always win hands down.

The vast majority of games still kick off at 3pm, ticket prices are realistic, you can often stand (and drink!) anywhere in the ground and will always be guaranteed a warm welcome by people who run their clubs for a love of the game. Whether you’re a Premier League or Championship fan without a game, a League One or League Two supporter who can’t make an away trip, or just someone who is curious about what their local club has to offer, there is sure to be something to interest everyone.

St Albans have reduced the price of the ticket to £10 for this fixture if brought in advance but hurry as these are selling like hot cakes with a bumper crowd expected at the Mozzarella Fellas Stadium.

Tickets for this match can be purchased via the St Albans City website or paid on the gate. We have a supporters coach running for this fixture, details of this will be posted on the website towards the end of the week.

NO HEART FOR HAMPTON

The boss gives his honest assessment on Saturday’s defeat to Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The Whites looked out of sorts during their latest outing against Hampton & Richmond Borough with a 3-0 home defeat, their second in as many games. From keeping four consecutive clean sheets just a couple of weeks ago, Mitch Brundle’s side have now conceded nine goals in three matches.

Speaking to Kent Online Sport Brundle said ‘It was a gutless performance. It’s just not good enough and not accepted. We’ve gone from four successive clean sheets to conceding nine goals against three teams below us, fighting for their lives. We just didn’t have enough character. It was just a gutless performance. I’m upset for the fans, as well, because we were getting a little gathering back together with our consistency and working hard. But we didn’t work hard enough today – and I won’t accept that. Even when I first got the job, I said I’ll never have a team that doesn’t run around – and they didn’t today. They let themselves down. We were missing two key experienced players, which is not an excuse.

You’re just asking the other players to work hard, have that desire and commitment, track runners, and we started the second half a little bit better, changing shape. But we conceded sloppy goals. There was no desire and no pride in their own performance. They have to take that on themselves. Some players do take a little bit, the more consistent ones, but it’s not acceptable from everyone else. We’ll just go back to the drawing board and, hopefully, not have it again.’

Skipper Lee Martin and fellow midfielder Jordan Higgs were both missing from the game following an accumulation of cards that meant both players served a suspension which includes this weeks fixture against St Albans. Fans took to social media and many in the bar after the game we asking why the Gaffer had not included himself in the line-up with limited options in the heart of the midfield.

‘Yeah, maybe now, I maybe didn’t need to play myself at the start [of his time in charge]’, said the boss. ‘But it’s coming to the crunch time for that. Do I think I’m the answer? I don’t know. What I didn’t want to do – and what I think is right – is, if I play myself ahead of someone, basically, I’m telling them they can walk out the door. They’re not good enough. The six games unbeaten wasn’t down to any quality or the ball-side of the game. It was down to heart, desire and commitment. But we didn’t have that and we haven’t had that for the last three games. We can see that on the statistics and they can see it. This is just a tough game to take because it’s not really about quality.’

The Whites head to St Albans this weekend, looking to get back to winning ways.

DOVER ATHLETIC 0 HAMPTON & RICHMOND BOROUGH 3

Dover are undone by a tidy Hampton and Richmond outfit.

It was a pretty even first 45 minutes here at Crabble with both sides spurning a decent chance each to take the lead but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time.

George Nikaj, still looking for his first goal since his return from his loan spell at Ashford, nodded a cross against the foot of the post in the 11th minute. That goal is just not coming for the young forward who is not getting the rub of the green in front of goal.

Hampton and Richmond had a couple of good chances themselves with Jake Goodman coming to the rescue with a timely block on the edge of the six yard box. Moments later and Jordan Thomas looked to have made enough ground at the far past but the cross just evaded him.

Visiting skipper Jake Gray blazed over in the 33rd minute from the edge of the penalty area when a little composure would have been the order of the day. Gray was in the thick of it again when in the last minute of stoppage time, Gray fired a shot past Stuart Nelson after the Whites goalkeeper had made a cracking save with his legs moments earlier. But it was all in vain as the hosts headed down the tunnel 1-0 down.

On the hour a slip from the Hampton defender enabled a cross from Paxman to find Ajayi but his control and shot was well blocked in a last ditch effort to keep the score line at 0-1.

Moments later and Jake Gray nearly doubled his and his teams tally with a dinked effort over Nelson which only found the side netting. With the Whites looking to force an equaliser, the hosts were starting to exploit the gaps left at the back.

In the 67th minute, that man Gray did manage to find the net. After a long ball through to Kurran-Browne, who looked to have been offside, he neatly played the ball back into the path of Gray who fired a low shot into the far bottom corner to give Hampton and Richmond breathing space.

Despite the setback, the Whites poured forward in the hope of making the last quarter of the game a contest. In the 73rd minute, Noah Carney’s spin and shot was wildly over the crossbar with the goal beckoning for the young forward.

With seven minutes left of normal time, Gray thought he was taking home the match ball when his effort beat Nelson, only to go narrowly wide, with half the ground thinking the ball was in.

Substitute David Fisher wrapped things up for the visitors in the 88th minute when he raced onto a through ball and placed his shot into Nelson’s bottom corner. 0-3

It was a wretched day for the Whites who are now only eight points clear of the drop zone. Hampton and Richmond leapfrogged us with that win, dropping us one place down to 15th in the table.

The lads will look to bounce back next week at St Albans and end this winless streak. We hope to see you there.
