VIDEO: MANAGER REACTION

We caught up with manager Andy Hessenthaler after the 0-0 draw against Chesterfield at Crabble on Saturday.

MATCH REPORT: DOVER 0 – 0 CHESTERFIELD

Dover earned their first point of the season as they held promotion chasing Chesterfield to a goalless draw at Crabble.

Whites will be the happiest of the two sides in a game that lacked any real clear cut chances.

Earlier on in the day, Whites boss Andy Hessenthaler made one change from the defeat to Altrincham last weekend, with Jake Goodman replacing Ricky Miller.

Dover almost went ahead inside 10 minutes when visiting goalkeeper Scott Loach could only parry Aaron Cosgrave’s shot towards Koby Arthur, however Spirerite captain Gavin Gunning would get there before the onrushing Arthur to clear the ball out of play.

Gunning then almost showed what he could do up front as he headed over from Jak McCourt’s corner.

Kabongo Tshimanga then had a great chance to put the visitors ahead shortly before the break, but Josh Bexon made a great save to deny the striker.

Down the other end, Travis Gregory went close to putting the home side ahead, but his shot from outside the area flew into the hands of Loach.

The away side looked to start the second half strong and almost took the lead after Calvin Miller did well down the left hand side before crossing the ball along the face of goal, however nobody was on the end of it to poke the ball home.

Liam Mandeville then went close as the visitors continued to look for chances. Danny Rowe found Tshimanga, who in turn found Mandeville, but the forward could only strike over the bar.

In the final 10 minutes Gregory and second half substitute Miller both had chances from the edge of the box, with Loach smothering Gregory’s shot before Miller shot wide.

MATCH PREVIEW: DOVER VS CHESTERFIELD

We will be looking to get our first points of the National League season when Chesterfield visit Crabble (3pm).

Whites are yet to get off the mark this season, with three defeats coming from their opening three games.

Last Saturday, despite being ahead twice, they were narrowly defeated 3-2 at Altrincham in an entertaining contest which saw Koby Arthur and Aaron Cosgrave get their first goals of the season.

Meanwhile, the visitors, who are expected to be near the top of the table come the end of the season, have had an almost perfect start to the season and sit second in the table after four games.

After winning their first three games without conceding a goal, the Spireites’ winning start came to an end in the 2-2 draw against visiting Bromley last weekend, in a game which saw the Kent side equalise in the 96th minute.

The last time these two sides met was the final game of the 2019-20 season, with all fixtures after this game being cancelled due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The game finished 1-1 at Crabble, with both goals coming in the last 10 minutes.

Tom Denton put the away side ahead in the 80th minute from the penalty spot, before Whites equalised in the 88th minute through Nassim L’Ghoul.

We caught up with manager Andy Hessenthaler after the National League defeat at Altrincham on Saturday.

MATCH REPORT: ALTRINCHAM 3 – 2 DOVER

Despite going in front twice, Dover suffered a third successive National League defeat this season in an entertaining contest at Altrincham.

Koby Arthur opened the scoring with his first goal for the club, but Whites were pegged back just after 20 minutes through Dan Mooney.

Aaron Cosgrave put Dover back in front midway through the second half, but the home side equalised once again shortly after through A-Jay Leitch-Smith and with a few minutes to go Ryan Colclough won it for Alty.

Dover started bright and was almost ahead within five minutes when Ricky Miller collected the ball from a long kick from Josh Bexon, however his shot went just wide.

However, moments later Whites were ahead though Arthur who was in the right place at the right time to knock the ball home after Cosgrave did very well to get behind the home defence.

Cosgrave almost doubled Dover’s lead shortly after as he picked the ball up in the box, but his shot was blocked well by Brad Jackson.

This came back to haunt the away side as Altrincham levelled through Mooney when the midfielder was able to take Joel Senior’s ball under control before striking past the arm of Bexon.

Connor Kirby then went close to turning the game around, however, after getting the ball from Mooney, he couldn’t keep his shot down.

Alty continued to put pressure on the Dover defence and they would have been ahead if it wasn’t for Bexon who denied Marcus Dinanga with a great save after the striker did well to find a shot after a great cross.

Alty’s goalkeeper Tony Thompson – who was unbeatable when these two sides played at Crabble last season – then made a great save to keep the scores level as he made himself big to deny Ben Williamson’s header from five yards out.

Altrincham started to control the game during the second half, with chances coming from both Mooney and Matty Kosylo.

However, these missed chances looked to have proved costly when Cosgrave gave Whites the lead just before the hour mark with a brilliant strike from the edge of the area, turning the defender and striking into the top corner, giving Thompson no chance.

Despite going behind, Alty continued to control the game and got their just rewards through second-half substitute Leitch-Smith as he connected to a cross into the box to convert past Bexon.

With minutes left, the home side went ahead for the first time in the afternoon through Colclough who scored a penalty after the winger was fouled in the box by Danny Collinge.

MATCH PREVIEW: ALTRINCHAM VS DOVER

Dover will be looking to get their first win and points of the season on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Altrincham.

After starting the season late due to COVID-19, Whites were hit with back-to-back defeats over the Bank Holiday weekend, losing 2-0 away to Maidenhead before a 1-0 home defeat to Boreham Wood through a Jake Goodman own goal.

It means we remain bottom of the league on -12 points.

Meanwhile, our hosts have started the season with a 3-1 win over Torquay and a 2-0 defeat at FC Halifax Town and currently sit in 12th place.

The teams were only able to play each other once last season, with this fixture being cancelled due to the club being unable to complete the season.

In the fixture at Crabble last season, it was the visiting side on the day who sneaked a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Fisayo Adarabioyo, with a fine display from Alty’s goalkeeper Tony Thompson keeping his side ahead.

The Robins boss Phil Parkinson has brought in a number of experienced players into his squad over the summer, none more than Dean Furman who has made 58 appearances for his native South Africa, scoring four goals.

He has also got experience of playing in the Football League with Bradford, Oldham, and Doncaster as well as spending time with Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

A-Jay Leitch-Smith and Ben Pringle have both joined on a free transfer from Morecambe. Leitch-Smith has over 240 games worth of experience in the Football League, playing for the likes of Crewe, Yeovil, Port Vale, Shrewsbury, and the aforementioned Morecambe.

The centre-forward also spent a season on loan at Dundee in the Scottish Premiership where he would play a total of 28 games.

Like his former Morecambe teammate, Pringle has also spent most of his career in the Football League. He has most notably played for Rotherham, Fulham, Preston North End, and fellow Kent side Gillingham. He also has further EFL experience with Torquay, Ipswich, Oldham, Grimsby, Tranmere, and Morecambe.

David Fitzpatrick, Joe Bunney, and Marcus Dinanga have also all joined from Football League clubs. Between them, they have played over 250 EFL games.

Finally, Connor Kirby has rejoined the club for a second loan spell, whilst Brad Jackson and Kennedy Digie have joined from Chester and Hereford.

Altrincham’s Player to Watch

Josh Hancock was the host’s top scorer last season and he will be looking to get his first goal of the season on Saturday.

ALTRINCHAM AWAY DAY GUIDE

Planning to visit Altrincham on Saturday?

Well, the hosts have provided us with a comprehensive guide for all  of you making the trip to Cheshire.

Welcome to Altrincham

We had the pleasure of visiting Dover early last season, but we never got the chance to welcome you up north to Alty in the 2020/21 season. It’s been over five years since your last visit to The J.Davidson Stadium … it’s been too long!

How to get your ticket?

First thing is first, you need a match ticket! We strongly recommend buying your tickets online in advance here to make your experience run smoothly and save a little time getting into the ground. You can find details on purchasing your tickets online on that link and please note that all matches are segregated this season and away fans enter via gates 5/6.

We do offer card and cash payment options to purchase your tickets on the gate and at just £17 for adults, we are one of the cheapest clubs in the National League. We do however strongly advise away fans to purchase their ticket in advance to save queuing and just make life that little be easier for you and us.

Fancy treating yourself to Alty hospitality?

We’re going to tell you all about how great the town centre is but if we’re being honest, we’re pretty good at hosting people ourselves in the Manchester Glass Sponsor’s Lounge! ‘Treat others like you’d like to be treated yourself’ is the rule of thumb at Alty and we take pride in being damn good hosts. There is a pre-match complimentary bar and meal, half-time refreshments, you’ll hear from our first team manager Phil Parkinson along with reserved seats in the family stand. Come on, let us look after you for the day, grab your hospitality ticket here!

Matchday programme

Of course you’ll want to pick up a copy of our incredible matchday programme costing just £3….you know, the change from the £20 note you had when you bought your ticket?! Featuring updates from the Board, Director of Football, captain Jake Moult as well as the lowdown on your own team, you’ll find plenty to entertain yourself with until kick off. You can purchase it in the stadium but you can also purchase online with the programme being sent out to you the day before the game.

Food and drink in The J. Davidson Stadium

We know that many of you will want to get into the ground early and we’d encourage you to have a bite to eat with us. From pies to pasties, burgers, hot dogs, sausage rolls and chips, we’ve got plenty of options to keep you fed and watered. Given the fact you’re up north, it’s only right that there is gravy, curry sauce and mushy peas to accompany your meal.

There’s plenty of snacks and drinks to keep you going too, and yes, the emphasis is once again on keeping you warm. We haven’t yet gone to the lengths of providing you with a warm blanket, but our Hot Choc, Soups and Hot Vimto does the job!

How to get to The J .Davidson Stadium?

It is pretty simple to be honest whether on foot, on the roads or via public transport.

Metrolink Trams and Trains

We are pretty fortunate to be right at the end of the tram line so you’ll find yourself within a short walk of the ground if you get on any tram from in and around Manchester that has ALTRINCHAM as the destination.

Altrincham resides in Zone 4 of the Manchester Metrolink network. If you’re travelling from the city centre, you will need a day travelcard that covers zones 1, 2, 3 and 4.

No need to walk far to find a Metrolink stop, as the Altrincham line departs from Piccadilly train station itself.

If your train is arriving at Manchester’s Oxford Road or Deansgate stations, then you can use the St. Peter’s Square and Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stops, respectively.

There are a whole host of trains that come through Altrincham also and you can find live departure boards along with a journey planner here. Coming from Manchester, allow yourself 45 minutes to get to Altrincham and then a short walk to the ground.

You can also plan your journey with Transport for Greater Manchester here which also provides bus timetables too.

Driving

The address and post code to put in your sat nav is The J. Davidson Stadium, Moss Lane, Altrincham WA15 8AP. We are close to the M6, M56 and M62 so whether you are coming from the north, south, east or west, we are not far from any of those major motorways.

A shout out to our friends at Passenger Cars who offer a 24 Hour Private Hire Taxi Service that covers all of Trafford, South Manchester & East Cheshire.

On foot

From the heart of the town centre, the ground is between 10 and 15 minutes depending on your location. You ultimately need to find Moss Lane and which leads off one of the main streets in town. Follow Moss Lane past Stamford Park which you’ll find on the right…..when you’ll see the floodlights a bit further on and you will know you have just about made it!

Where to drink?

The Station hotel is popular among away fans as an ideal drop in right over the road from the train and tram station and is located just a 12-minute walk from the ground.

If that is still too far between rest breaks, then The King George is virtually next to the J. Davidson Stadium and is usually packed full of Robins fans. Don’t worry though, we are a friendly bunch and welcome the friendly banter.

Where to stay?

Coming to Alty for the day is absolutely fine, but it would be remiss of you not to come for the weekend or an extended stay if you can. If you’re looking for a good night’s sleep to break up the travel, then we know the perfect places for you.

We’ve got a Travelodge located in the centre of town with easy access to Manchester Airport for any international guests while the Marriott Hotel is situated just off the motorway complete with spa facilities and Tuscan-inspired dining.

Finally, the Best Western Cresta Court hotel with three superb banqueting suites and an extensive range of massage therapies if you really are going to treat yourself.

Best place to live 2020!

Described as where “suburbia meets utopia”, Altrincham was voted the best place to live in 2020 by The Times…..because it’s quite simply an awesome place to live!

Now, we’re not expecting you to up sticks and move to the area just because your beloved team is playing here but it is just as good a place to visit for the weekend!

With the renowned Alty market at the heart of the town, there is an abundance of community spirit on weekends with some of the country’s best eateries to grab your pre-match lunch including Honest Crust’s wood fired pizzas and the multi-award winning Great North Pie Co.

Opposite the market, is Blanchflower Bakery and Kitchen, the perfect place to grab a sensational brunch before the game or the morning after the night before!

Well, that pretty much wraps up our guide of Alty!

Whatever you decide to do, we look forward to welcoming you and seeing you at The J. Davidson Stadium this Saturday….may the best team win!

MATCH REPORT: DOVER 0 – 1 BOREHAM WOOD

By Alex Hoad

Dover slipped to a second consecutive defeat to begin their Vanarama National League campaign as Boreham Wood claimed a 1-0 win at Crabble on Bank Holiday Monday.

It was a third straight win for Wood, who have yet to concede a goal and climbed to third in the table. Whites remain on minus 12 points and rooted to the foot of the table after the League’s pre-season points penalty.

Despite being forced into two changes with Ryan Hanson and Reda Johnson picking up knocks in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Maidenhead, Andy Hessenthaler’s side began brightly and won a couple of early corners but the visitors always looked dangerous on the break.

Big Will Evans had already headed over the bar for the visitors when they came close to a breakthrough when Jamal Fyfield slashed a far-post volley over the bar – and River End stand – from six yards following a deep cross from Josh Rees on 11 minutes.

Dover really should have been infront at the other end just a minute later when Travis Gregory did superbly down the right, picking up a return pass from Ricky Miller and firing a low cross into the middle where Aaron Cosgrave lay in wait. His first-time shot back across goal was however too close to Nathan Ashmore and the former Ebbsfleet keeper was able to parry before the ball was hacked clear.

Scott Boden saw a shot blocked at his near post by Dover keeper Josh Bexon before, mid-way through the half, Miller gave Whites fans a reminder of his talent when he chased the ball down on the left and fizzed in a fierce drive from 25 yards which flew narrowly past the far post with the flying Ashmore beaten.

Kane Smith hooked a volley over Bexon’s bar and saw an inswinging free-kick from 40 yards fly inches past the far post after evading everyone.

The visitors took the lead four minutes before the break when Williamson’s pass in midfield was charged down. Mendy picked up the loose ball and was able to drive forward and spread to Smith on the right whose low centre was agonisingly turned in at his near post by Jake Goodman.

It was nearly 2-0 on the stroke of half-time when former Whites striker Tyrone Marsh reached a lofted through ball and lobbed Bexon, stranded in no man’s land after rushing off his line, only for his effort to bounce well wide.

The second half was a cagey affair with plenty of stoppages which eventually led to Whites boss Hessenthaler being shown a yellow card by referee Gary Parsons for his protests. Chances were few and far between as the visitors seemed largely content to run down the clock.

Mendy did flash a low cross in from the left five minutes after the restart but the sliding Marsh was unable to connect in the centre while Evans tamely headed a free-kick straight at Bexon.

Koby Arthur and James Caton were sent on by Hessenthaler to try to change the game while Academy youngster Alex Green came off the bench on 75 minutes to play in central defence after a nasty clash led to Jake Goodman walking off looking very woozy.

Caton stung Ashmore’s palms with a near-post cross-shot from the left byline with time running out but despite plenty of late possession and some set-pieces in dangerous areas, Dover were unable to muster their first goal of the campaign infront of a crowd of 1,517 – the first National League spectators at Crabble in 534 days.

Dover Athletic: Josh Bexon; Seth Twumasi, Danny Collinge, Jake Goodman (Alex Green, 75mins), Sam Wood (C) (Koby Arthur, 61mins); TJ Bramble, Henry Woods, Travis Gregory; Ricky Miller (James Caton, 70mins), Ben Williamson, Aaron Cosgrave. Subs not used: Adam Parkes, Khale Da Costa.

MATCH REPORT: MAIDENHEAD 2 – 0 DOVER

Two goals in the opening 20 minutes condemned Dover to defeat as they kicked off their National League campaign at Maidenhead.

Josh Kelly opened the scoring for the home side, before Sam Barratt doubled their lead a few minutes later.

Despite both sides having bright starts, it was the hosts who took the lead 15 minutes in after Barratt’s cross found the head of Kelly at the back post who headed it past Josh Bexon in the Dover net.

Shortly after, Barratt doubled the Magpies’ lead when he was able to get onto the end of a ball over the top of the defence to put the ball past Bexon.

The home side continued to look dangerous and almost got a third in the first half but Barratt couldn’t get on the end of Jack Senga’s cross.

Reda Johnson almost got Whites back into the game on the stroke of half time when a Ricky Miller free kick found its way to the defender, however James Holden in the Maidenhead goal did well to make the save and smother the ball.

Minutes into the second half, Gillingham loanee Henry Woods looked to half Whites’ deficit, however his shot went just wide.

Ex-Magpie Jake Goodman then thought he had got Dover back into the game just before the hour mark, however Holden made a great save to deny the defenders header from a corner.

Miller almost got Whites back into the game with 10 minutes to go, but he couldn’t keep the ball on target as his shot went wide.

Dover continued to come forward as they looked to get back in the game, and they almost did get one back with a minute to go and, but Holden did well again to deny Goodman.

Dover XI – Bexon, Wood, Johnson, Goodman, Collinge, Hanson(Gregory 45′), Woods, Bramble, Miller, Williamson(Arthur 65′), Cosgrave

Subs not used – Parkes, Caton, Da Costa
