Jim Parmenter gives us his thoughts after an exciting night at Crabble on Friday.
We caught up with Andy Hessenthaler after the pre-season win against his former club Watford at Crabble on Friday.
A dominant second-half display sealed victory for Dover in their penultimate pre-season fixture after the game was pushed back 30 minutes due to Watford’s delayed arrival due to a crash on the approach to the Dartford Crossing.
Dominic Hutchinson gave Watford the lead midway through the first half before Ricky Miller equalised for the penalty spot. Shortly after Ben Williamson put Whites in front before Travis Gregory doubled the lead with just over 15 minutes left.
Whites were gifted a fourth late on through an own goal.
Aaron Cosgrave thought he had given Whites an early lead when he was able to tap the ball in from a yard after great play by Ricky Miller who beat the challenge of three players, however, the referee called it back for offside.
Ben Williamson then forced the Watford keeper into a save, with a speculative effort from outside the box.
Kane Crichlow almost gave The Hornets the lead a quarter of an hour into the game but couldn’t get on the end of a ball across the goal line.
Watford did take the lead shortly after when Hutchinson smashed home from inside the six-yard box after Whites failed to clear.
Miller almost equalised straight away for Dover, however after finding space at the edge of the area, his shot curled just over the bar.
Kamil Conteh almost doubled Watford’s lead from a free-kick which looked to be curling into the top corner. However, Josh Bexon did well to deny the Watford youngster.
Whites came out determined in the second half and equalised five minutes into the second half when Miller stroked the ball into the bottom left corner.
Almost immediately after, Dover was ahead after a defensive error from the Watford goalkeeper allowed Williamson to strike into an open net from 40 yards out.
TJ Bramble almost got in on the act after this. After picking up the ball from a parried Miller shot, the second half substitute shot from the edge of the box, however, the ball was pulled just wide.
Gregory sealed it with just over 15 minutes to go, doing well to meet a great cross into the box slotting it into the net, giving the Watford stopper no chance.
Gregory continued looking dangerous as Whites were gifted a fourth after the wingers cross was deflected in off a Watford head.
Andy Hessenthaler will welcome his former club Watford to Crabble tonight in Whites final home pre-season fixture.
Our manager spent five years with the Hornets between 1991-1996 and scored 11 goals in just shy of 200 games for the club.
Hessenthaler’s men have had a good pre-season thus far, and tonight’s game will be another good test ahead of the National League season opener against Solihull Moors on August 21st.
Whites will be looking to add to the 15 goals they have already scored in their wins against Ashford United, Deal Town, Folkestone Invicta, K Sports, and Whitstable Town. They have only failed to score in the 2-0 defeat against League Two Stevenage.
Our Watford loanee, goalkeeper Adam Parkes, is also eligible to play against his parent club.

We caught up with Manager Andy Hessenthaler after Danny Collinge, Travis Gregory and Ricky Miller scored the goals in the 3-1 pre-season friendly win at Whitstable Town on Tuesday.
Dover will look to bounce back from their first pre-season defeat when they travel to Whitstable Town this evening.
Whites’ 2-0 defeat to League Two Stevenage on Saturday ended their unbeaten run through their pre-season campaign, having won all four of their previous games.
This evening’s game will be the start of a busy week for Andy Hessenthaler’s men, with their final three pre-season friendlies taking place, including two on consecutive game this weekend.
For our hosts, tonight’s game will be their penultimate friendly before the season, with their trop to Chipstead on Saturday ending their pre-season campaign.
Like Whites, Whitstable have only had one defeat in their pre-season, coming in a 4-2 loss to Canterbury City. This loss was sandwiched in between draws against Deal Town and Margate as well as an intra-squad friendly. They most recently beat Marlow 1-0.
Please note – There will be no LiveText coverage for this game.

New signing Danny Collinge gives his first interview after joining the club on Saturday.
Coach Nicky Southall gives his take on the pre-season friendly against Stevenage Football Club at Crabble on Saturday.
Dover suffered their first loss in pre-season after the League 2 visitors scored in each half.
Jamie Reid put Stevenage ahead before Chris Lines doubled their lead in the second half.
Reid struck inside the first 10 minutes after he got on the end of a high through ball from Jake Reeves to fire past Josh Bexon, giving the keeper no chance.
Shortly after, Whites were almost level through Gillingham loanee Henry Woods, who forced the visitors trialist goalkeeper into a great save after great work from TJ Bramble to keep the ball under huge pressure from the Stevenage defence.
Ricky Miller then went close after Aaron Cosgrave won a free kick on the edge of the area, however, his shot deflected off the wall and out for a corner.
From the resulting corner, Ryan Hanson went close from Sam Wood’s cross, glancing his header over the bar.
Whites started the second half strongly and were almost level through Ben Williamson, who got on the end of a deep cross from Miller and it needed a good save to deny him.
From the resulting corner, Whites went close again, this time Jake Goodman heading wide from Wood’s corner.
Goalkeeper Adam Parkes, who replaced Bexon at half-time, produced a couple of stunning saves to deny Stevenage, but there was nothing he could do to keep out Lines’ stunning free-kick.
A trialist almost got one back for Whites in the closing minutes after getting on the end of a great cross but he was denied spectacularly by the visitors keeper.
Dover Athletic is delighted to announce the signing of Danny Collinge after the former Colchester United centre-back impressed whilst on trial with us.
The 23-year-old played in our opening pre-season friendly against Ashford United and scored our first goal in the 2-1 win against Folkestone Invicta at Crabble last Saturday.
Collinge came up through the ranks at MK Dons and amassed more than 30 caps for England at Under-16, U17, and U18 levels, including playing in the U17 World Cup in 2015.
Our new number 23 was in the same England Under-17 and U18 teams as Premier League stars, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Everton’s Tom Davies.
Collinge signed for League Two Colchester in June 2019 following a five-year stay in Germany where he was with VfB Stuttgart, playing for their under-19 and second teams.
He was a free agent after being released earlier this summer.
Welcome to the club, Danny!
