PREVIEW: TORQUAY UNITED VS WHITES

Whites make the 520-mile round trip to Devon to take on the 16th placed Gulls at Plainmoor on Saturday.

Both teams have had a fortnight without a competitive fixture after their early FA Cup exits.

TORQUAY’S RECENT LEAGUE FORM

Saturday’s hosts have picked up four points out of their past two National League games following a 1-1 draw at Wrexham last time out.

They beat the visiting Kings Lynn Town 2-0 at Plainmoor on October 23 after suffering defeat by the same margin at Bromley in their previous league outing.

LAST MEETING

We lost 2-0 at Plainmoor last October after defender Kyle Cameron scored twice in the behind closed doors fixture.

Our last victory at Torquay was on October 7th, 2017 when goals from Cambridge United loanee Paul Lewis and Ryan Bird secured a 2-0 win.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT DOVER

Manager Gary Johnson and defender Dean Moxey both spoke to TUFC TV ahead of our visit.

TEAM NEWS

Striker Ricky Miller (calf) and defender Seth Twumasi (knee) will both miss the trip through injury.

Defender Jake Goodman is available again after missing the trip to Southend United with an ankle injury and he comes into the matchday squad along with young forward Noah Carney.

Meanwhile, we can also confirm that midfielder Yannis Drais, who arrived on a non-contract basis last month, has now left the club.

DOVER COLOURS

MATCH PREVIEW: SOUTHEND VS DOVER

Dover continue to search for their first win of the season as they travel to Southend this evening.

Despite coming from behind twice, three goals in the last 25 minutes against Stockport on Saturday sealed another defeat in what has been a disappointing season for Andy Hessenthaler’s men.

Likewise, this evening’s hosts are also struggling to get wins on the board this season, having picked up two in their first 12 games. This form led to the sacking of manager Phil Brown at the beginning of October, with Kevin Maher coming into replace him and ex-Barnet manager Darren Currie coming in as his number two.

Last time out, the National League newcomers suffered their 8th defeat of the season as a late Tyrone Marsh goal meant they were defeated away from home by Boreham Wood.

SOUTHEND’S PLAYER TO WATCH

Rhys Murphy knows how to score in this division, having done it consistently for Yeovil Town over the last few years. He is also top scorer for The Shrimpers with three goals this campaign.

LAST TIME WE MET

The last time we played this evening’s host was in the FA Cup in 2019.

On that day Hessenthaler’s men came out on top against a side who were struggling in League One at the time.

With seven minutes left of the game, Ruel Sotiriou scored the only goal of the game shortly after coming onto the pitch.

The Orient loanee made a name for himself live on BT Sport by latching onto a long ball and firing past the goalkeeper to send Whites’ into the Second Round.

MATCH PREVIEW: DOVER VS STOCKPORT

After two weeks of FA Cup action, Andy Hessenthaler’s side turns their attention back to the National League where a win is very much needed in their fight for survival.

Whites were knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle on Tuesday night as they fell to a single goal defeat against Yate Town in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round Replay.

Meanwhile, our visitors lost 2-1 at home on Tuesday against Barnet, a result which saw manager Simon Rusk sacked the following morning..

The Hatters are currently 10th in the National League, five points off the play-off places.

STOCKPORT’S PLAYER TO WATCH

John Rooney knows the National League very well having scored consistently in this league for a number of years. He has got three goals already this season and will be looking to add to his tally at Crabble.

LAST TIME WE MET

In our only meeting against Stockport last season, three second half goals meant Whites were defeated at Edgeley Park.

John Rooney opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the home side, before the lead was doubled 10 minutes later through Alex Reid.

Rooney got his second of the game with a minute to go as Dover were comprehensively beaten.

MATCH PREVIEW: YATE TOWN VS DOVER

Dover make the long trip to Gloucestershire for the second time in a week this evening as they face Yate Town in the rescheduled FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round replay.

Last Tuesday’s encounter at Lodge Road was postponed an hour after the scheduled kick off time due to a floodlight failure.

This replay came about after Andy Hessenthaler’s men came from behind to earn a draw against The Bluebells at Crabble.

Whites went behind early on at Crabble through Olly Mehew, before Ricky Miller equalised with his first competitive goal of the season midway through the second half.

Reda Johnson was sent off with 10 minutes to go in the tie and will miss tonight’s replay.

The winners of this tie will welcome Yeovil Town in the First Round proper, after they knocked out Weymouth on penalties in their own replay last Tuesday, with ties commencing on the weekend of 6th November.

Reda Johnson was harshly sent off with 10 minutes to go in the tie and will now miss tonight’s replay.

Andy Hessentaler’s men will be looking for their first win of the season when they travel to Bristol, with his side needing to put in a better performance in the replay to get through.

MATCH PREVIEW: DOVER VS YATE TOWN

Andy Hessenthaler’s squad will turn their focus to the FA Cup when they host Yate Town in the Fourth Qualifying Round on Saturday.

Whites enter the competition at this stage and face a club two steps below them in the non-league pyramid.

The Gloucestershire visitors are currently 10th on the Southern League Premier Division South table after winning four out of their first 10 league games.

They come into this game on the back of a 2-1 win at Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday.

MATCH PREVIEW: DOVER VS BARNET

Andy Hessenthaler’s injury-hit squad faces another stern test when Barnet visit Crabble on Saturday.

The Bees, the side above Whites on the National League table, are unbeaten in their previous three outings after draws against Kings Lynn Town and FC Halifax Town following a 3-1 win against Weymouth at The Hive.

Tuesday’s defeat against Aldershot at Crabble sees Barnet 16 points ahead of Whites.

Barnet drew 1-1 at Kings Lynn on Tuesday.

Joe Widdowson put Barnet ahead in the fourth minute, turning home Rob Hall’s corner.

But the hosts levelled midway through the first half as Michael Clunan fired home from the edge of the area.

King’s Lynn could have won it after the break but Sam Sargeant saved Gold Omotayo’s penalty, with Ross Barrows missing the rebound.

BARNET’S PLAYER TO WATCH

Midfielder Mitch Brundle needs no introduction to Dover fans. Our former captain got his first goal for Barnet in their 3-1 win against Weymouth two weeks ago..

LAST TIME WE MET

In our only fixture against the Bees last season, and our final home game before the club’s results were expunged, Whites won only their third game of the campaign.

Will De Havilland’s double inside the first 20 minutes put Hessenthaler’s men 2-0 up before Ahkeem Rose made it three midway through the first half.

Michael Petrasso pulled a goal back on the hour mark, but Whites held on for victory on a cold, wet night at Crabble.

MATCH PREVIEW: DOVER VS ALDERSHOT TOWN

Andy Hessenthaler will be looking to see his team bounce back from defeat this evening as they welcome Aldershot Town to Crabble.

Whites conceded five in the first half on Saturday as they fell to a 6-0 defeat away to top of the league Grimsby.

This result means that Dover remain bottom of the table on -9, having just picked up three points this season.

Meanwhile, our opponents sit one place above us in 22nd. They have lost three from their last five games and sit 13 points above Whites on four points.

Last time out, heavy rainfall meant that their home game against Wrexham was abandoned in the second half with the Welsh side leading 2-0.

ALDERSHOT’S PLAYER TO WATCH

Despite only picking up one win so far this season, AFC Wimbledon loanee Corie Andrews has been in fine form for The Shots, scoring five goals in his first nine games this season.

MATCH PREVIEW – GRIMSBY VS DOVER

Dover travels to high-flying Grimsby Town on Saturday as they look to get their first three points on the board.

Andy Hessenthaler’s men will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Crabble against Kent rivals Bromley.

Grimsby currently sits third in the National League table and two points below league leaders Chesterfield with a record of five wins, two draws, and a single defeat in their opening eight games.

That defeat was 3-1 at Bromley n Tuesday.

This will be the first time since 2016 that these two sides will face each other.

That game finished 1-1 after Omar Bogle gave The Mariners the lead from the penalty spot before Jack Parkinson equalised for Whites just before the hour mark.

GRIMSBY’S PLAYER TO WATCH

Summer signing John McAtee has had a good start to his Grimsby career, having scored four goals in his first eight games this season.

MATCH PREVIEW: DOVER VS BROMLEY

Dover host Kent rivals Bromley on Saturday afternoon as they look to continue closing the gap to the teams above them.

Whites earned their third point in four games on Tuesday evening as they held Solihull Moors to a goalless draw at Crabble. It is their second consecutive goalless draw at home after holding league leaders Chesterfield to a draw earlier this month.

Meanwhile, our opponents did not have a midweek game and last played lon Saturday where they defeated second from bottom Barnet 2-0 at Hayes Lane.

The Ravens have had a mixed start to the season and sit in 12th after their first five games having won two, lost two, and drawn one.

Despite being in 12th, they’re tied fifth in the top scorers so far this season with 11 goals, however, most of the teams above them have played two games more, with Grimsby the only side to only play one more game.

This is mainly down to last season’s top-scorer Michael Cheek who has had a brilliant start to the season having scored in every game in the National League. He currently sits third on the top scorers’ list with six goals in his first five games.

BROMLEY’S PLAYER TO WATCH

As already mentioned, Michael Cheek has started the season in brilliant form having scored in each of Bromley’s first five games this campaign.
