Up Next – Hemel Hempstead vs Dover Athletic

Match Preview by Fred Deveson

This Saturday, the Whites are back on the road as they head to Hemel Hempstead in search of back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Dover might be fancying their chances this weekend as they are coming off the back of a fantastic win against promotion chasing Chelmsford. The hosts this weekend are also on a bad run of form lately, which will encourage the Whites even more.

Hemel Hempstead’s last win was on the 23rd January when they came out on top against Farnborough, but since then their form has dipped massively.

The Hertfordshire based side have lost eight of their last nine games, drawing the other to Dartford, which puts them in a spot of bother going into the final few matches.

They recently lost to Aveley at home 3-4, with an early goal from Aveley circulating social media due to the nature of it, as it was poor defending from Hemel that allowed the visitors to score within the first few seconds of the game.

Earlier on in the season, the same fixture at Crabble ended in a 2-2 draw, with goals from Dembele and Zidan Sutherland as Dover lost out on all 3 points thanks to an Alfie Matthews equaliser in the dying seconds.

The Whites will be hoping to go one step further this weekend and beat the team on a poor run of form to make it two wins from two.

Dover Athletic 1-0 Chelmsford City

Match Report by Fred Deveson

Dover 1-0 Chelmsford, and it’s not an April fools joke! Dover came out victorious at Crabble on Monday afternoon as they saw off title challengers Chelmsford City.

The game started and right from the first minute, Dover were more than up for the fight. They were battling hard and winning the ball in good areas.

Despite this, the first chance fell to the visitors. They got the ball in a good position on the left and after a save by Rowley, it was eventually scrambled away and the hosts survived.

Not long after this, however, it was the Whites who took the lead. Luke Baptiste was set free on the left wing and after some good footwork, he put a lovely ball into the box. Charles Cook got on the end of it but his shot was blocked, and it fell to Young who tapped it in for his first ever senior goal.

The first half continued to be dominated by Dover, who had less of the ball but more of the chances. Shortly after the goal, Freddie Oliver headed the ball over the bar after Akehurst’s corner.

The hosts were lethal on the break and the threat continued. Nikaj in particular was playing very well on the right, leading the counter attacks especially well. On this occasion, he worked the ball into the box well but his shot was superbly blocked and it went out for a corner, which came to nothing.

Dover started the second half how they ended the first, with lots of energy and fight. It was Baptiste and Nikaj leading the charge and the two almost combined to get a second for Dover but it wasn’t meant to be on this occasion.

The Whites were looking dangerous from set pieces too, with a header by Naylor finding the fingertips of the Chelmsford goalkeeper. Dover were so close a second that they probably deserved.

Towards the end of the game, the away side did make a push for an equaliser. The crosses and corners came flying inbut the hosts defender exceptionally well.

Rowley was called into action a couple of times, with a save down to his near post being the pick of the bunch as the second half wore on.

The Whites made some changes as the second half drew closer to it’s end, with the manager looking to bring on some fresh legs to help in the defence of the 1-0 lead.

The corners kept coming from the away side but Dover defended every one of them very well and looked incredibly solid. The visitors did not have a clear-cut chance all game.

There was some scrapping between players at the end, but eventually Dover held out and secured what is most likely their best result of the season so far against high-flying Chelmsford.

Dover are back on the road this Saturday against Hemel Hempstead, and will be looking to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Welling United 1-0 Dover Athletic

Match Report by Fred Deveson

A warm afternoon in South London saw the hosts Welling United come away 1-0 winners, all but keeping them up this season, and unfortunately relegating Dover Athletic.

The game itself, despite its heartbreaking consequences, was largely uneventful, particularly in the first half.

In the first 30 minutes there was only one or two half chances to note, with one being for the hosts who worked it nicely into the box, but the shot was well blocked.

The Whites had a chance when the goalkeeper fumbled his clearance, but Nikaj couldn’t pounce when the loose ball came to him and the score remained level.

The chances started to come more towards the end of the first half. The hosts got in a good position again and the effort by the forward trickled just wide of the post.

Charles Cook was looking positive from right wing-back, and it was one of his good runs that managed to set free Dembele. The striker took the ball in his stride but could not finish past the Welling goalkeeper.

There was a chance just before the half-time whistle for the home side. A scrappy bit of play in the box eventually fell nicely for the man in red but he fired it just over.

The second half started with the visitors on top. Rowley was called into action down to his right to keep the score at 0-0.

Then came the golden chance for Dover. Charles Cook found himself in a good position and his shot was saved and parried out to Dembele who could not convert.

From this moment on, the feeling grew and grew that the hosts would eventually take the lead.

Rowley was called into action again with around 20 minutes to go, making a good save but giving Welling a corner doing so. This would be the corner that leads to the only goal of the game. The ball came in to the near post and was slotted in to give the hosts the lead.

The Whites did have a chance in the final few minutes of the game, with Wilkinson’s effort from outside the box being tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper.

The hosts then managed to see out the game after a lengthy period of stoppage time, thus ending Dover’s survival hopes and relegating the Whites with 6 games to go.

It’s Chelmsford at home up next on Monday for Dover

Up Next – Easter Double Header

Match Preview by Fred Deveson

It’s a double header this easter weekend for Dover Athletic who face Welling in South London on Friday and Chelmsford on Monday 1st April at Crabble.

This coming game on Friday is potentially going to be a fatal one, as if Dover fail to win, they are officially relegated to the 7th tier.

There is no doubt, however, that no matter what happens the Whites will not go down without a fight and will be looking to take some positive results and performances into the new season.

Welling have also been in a relegation battle of their own this season, struggling near the bottom of the table for a lot of the campaign.

The two sides drew 2-2 at Crabble earlier in the season, with a late goal from Naylor getting a point for the Whites.

Since then, Welling have pulled themselves up the table and currently sit in 18th with a 5 point cushion over Dartford in 21st.

They have only lost 2 of their last 9 and have won 4 of those. The hosts for Friday have turned it on when most needed this season.

As for Monday’s opponents, they are in a much healthier position then Welling and Dover. Chelmsford sit in 2nd place behind leaders Yeovil Town.

The Essex based team have won 7 of their last 10, only losing to Maidstone and Worthing on this run and drawing to Farnborough. They have scored ten in their 4 games and will be looking to extend their goalscoring run this weekend as they face Dartford.

It is set to be a tough set of games for the Whites this Easter, but Dover will be wanting to put out some good performances to end this season.

Dover Athletic 1-3 Farnborough

Match Report by Fred Deveson

It was a chilly afternoon yesterday on non-league day as Dover fell short in a 1-3 defeat.

The game started superbly for the hosts, who started by having to contain the visitors which they did well. In the first attack of the game for the Whites, Nick Dembele found himself in a good position and he fired Dover in front with a fantastic effort from an ever-tightening angle.

One may have thought that the hosts would have kicked on from this goal, but that was not to be. Farnborough continued to dominate possession but nothing was coming from it. Dover were defending well.

However it wasn’t long until the visitors did find the breakthrough. A penalty was awarded against Dover much to the anger of Scott Holding the offender. Farnborough converted the penalty and it was 1-1.

The away side got into their groove after this and really kicked on. A long ball came floating over the top from the goalkeeper and the flag stayed down. The forward then chipped Rowley and it was 1-2, again to the anger of the back line who felt the flag should have gone up.

The second half started the same as the first ended. It didn’t take long though before Dover had a good chance to level the game. Dembele got himself in behind the defence and tried to round the goalkeeper but the number one stood his ground well.

Naylor also had an excellent chance from a corner by Wilkinson, but his free header went just wide of the post and Farnborough had survived.

Soon after, the away side extended their advantage. A brilliant header from a well delivered corner put the visitors in front by 2 and they now had a cushion to fall back on.

Some changes were made and the visitors had a chance to make it 1-4 but the game eventually petered out and both sides settled for the 1-3 score line.

Dover must win against Welling this coming Friday if they are to stay up this season.

Up Next – Dover Athletic vs Farnborough

Match Preview by Fred Deveson

This weekend Dover are back at Crabble as they host Farnborough in what will be their last attempt at survival.

It’s a special weekend this weekend as it is non-league day on Saturday, the day of the game. A raffle for every attendee with big prizes, girls football, meet the players and much more will be available this weekend.

More information can be found here: https://doverathletic.com/news/non-league-day-2024/

The Whites will be looking to capitalise on their recent improvements. They will be hoping they

can go one better this weekend and grab a win against mid table Farnborough.

The goal scoring of the hosts for the weekend has been poor of late, but it’s not due to a lack of chances created. Final third decisions and a lack of a cutting edge are the main reason why Dover is struggling to put the ball in the net lately.

Should Dover lose this game, the consequences in terms of relegation are almost fatal. A loss next weekend and a win for Truro will all but relegate the Whites.

Farnborough are in a rich vein of form, having won the last 4 games and are in tenth place, making a late surge for the playoff places.

The visitors have only lost once in their last 9, a defeat to champions elect Yeovil Town and have won 2 of their last 3 away games.

Farnborough have absolutely found their scoring boots lately, having scored 8 goals in the last 3 games making it a very tough fixture for the Whites.

It is sure to be a fantastic day at Dover Athletic, with plenty on offer both on and off the pitch.

Before the game manager Jake Leberl has said:

“I do feel that our performances of late have been much improved with the previous two games we’ve performed for the full game rather than half a game which was becoming a trait and something we needed to do a lot better on. But again we only have 2 points to show for our endeavours due to naivety & several missed opportunities in our play.“
