BIRD STRIKES LATE TO SEND DOVER TOP

WHITES 1-0 SOLIHULL MOORS

Ryan Bird’s late goal put Dover back onto top spot and sent a bumper Crabble crowd home happy.

In front of a season high of 2,795, the striker powered home Cambridge loanee Paul Lewis’ cross in the 81st minute to finally break the deadlock.

Bird had volleyed high and wide early on and Mitch Brundle was off target with a low drive as the home team took the game to the visitors.

Moors’ keeper Nathan Vaugan tipped over Mitch Pinnock’s fierce free-kick after Kadell Daniel had been felled just outside the box.

Pinnock then tried his luck with an acrobatic overhead kick that bounced the wrong side of Vaughan’s post.

A spectator for much of the half, home goalie Mitch Walker was quick off his line to deny Shepherd Murombedzi from poking the ball underneath his body.

The stopper then palmed away the same player’s strike from the edge of the area shortly after Mitch Brundle’s cross-sum-shot eluded both Manny Parry and Daniel at the other end of the pitch.

Joe Payne fired wide after the break for the away side and Pinnock’s header had Vaughan scrambling across his goalline to catch the ball.

Captain Brundle thought he had given his side the lead following a rampaging run from his own half, but his shot deflected agonisingly wide of the post.

But Athletic finally made the breakthrough thanks to Bird and the lead was almost doubled minutes later.

Lewis’ scorching drive from Brundle’s lay-off whistled the wrong side of the post leaving the home side to hang on for the remaining few minutes.

And Whites were nearly punished in injury time.

Firstly Darren Carter curled over a free-kick and goalkeeper Vaughan – up for a Solihull corner, headed over when well placed.

But Chris Kinnear’s men held firm until the final whistle to secure all three points.

Earlier, Dover’s boss made one change to the side that started at Guiseley last weekend as Lewis replaced Nortei Nortey, who started on the bench.

Whites next travel to Sutton United on Tuesday 3rd October.  Kick off 7:45pm.

Dover:Walker, Gallifuoco, Essam, Parry, Passley, Brundle, Lewis (Fazakerley 84), Ilesanmi, Daniel (Allen 67), Bird, Pinnock (Sho-Silva 73).

Subs not used: Nortey, Richards.

Solihull:  Vaughan, Green, Kettle, Daly, Payne, Murombedzi (McDonald 73), Richards (Campbell 84), Carter, Carline, Brodie, Afolayan (Maye 62).

EASTER SOCCER SCHOOL

COMMUNITY NEWS

The Football in the Community Team have been very busy delivering quality football coaching to all ages.

With the vital help of our community volunteers, Deb and Paul Harrison, we have been providing a variety of projects to the local community.

Happy Feet Soccer School

The Saturday morning Soccer School is still proving to be very popular. Children between the ages of five to 16 can turn up and join in for just £3 a session and it is not compulsory to turn up every week.

The Community Team delivered nine full days of Soccer fun during the Summer holidays, spanning over three weeks. Coaches and children alike had a great time using their soccer skills as well as their ‘brains’ solving puzzles. No tears were seen during these sessions (well apart from a couple of the male coaches!!)

A big thank you to two of our first team players, Jamie Allen and Kane Richards, for attending, handing out certificates and making the children’s day.

Another thank you goes to Captain Crab who side stepped along to the presentations.

 Walking Football (Men 50+)

This great initiative was set up in February with the help of coaches Graham and Richard who give up their Sunday mornings to work alongside this energetic bunch of chaps (the fun and laughter can be heard for miles).

Its not all fun though, they arrive at the Centre Spot after an hours training and a game of football, for a well earned cup of tea and choccie biscuits along with some social time and a catch up.

Walking Football (Women 40+)

This will be starting in the next few weeks.

Thank You’s

A huge thank you must go to the National League Trust for providing additional funding to help these Community Football services run:

Happy Feet

Walking Football – Men

Walking Football – Women

Summer Soccer Schools

Schools’ Football Tournaments

Equally, a massive thank you to Nick Cunningham, John Martin and Tom Petters for their kind donations to our community scheme this year.

PREVIEW: WHITES V SOLIHULL MOORS

It’s Community Day at Crabble this Saturday and Dover will hope they can return to top spot with victory in front of a bumper crowd.

Athletic’s opponents Solihull have lost their last three matches on the road and Chris Kinnear’s side will be aiming to make it back-to-back home wins following their 4-0 rout of Chester just under a fortnight ago.

But Moors boss Liam MacDonald has recently strengthened his squad by adding left-back Joe Payne on a one-month loan from Barnet and forward Richard Brodie.

Much-travelled striker Brodie has plenty of National League experience, having featured for 11 different clubs in non-league’s top tier.

Whites currently sit third on the ladder, one point behind current leaders Sutton United.

SOLIHULL’S RECENT FORM

SOLIHULL MOORS 2 – 2 DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE

Jake Howell scored a stoppage-time equaliser as Dagenham & Redbridge rescued a point at the Automated Technology Group Stadium.

The away team were ahead on six minutes when Mason Bloomfield headed in Andre Boucaud’s free-kick.

But Dapo Afolayan sent in a cross for Darren Carter to level matters five minutes later and completed the turnaround himself with a 25-yard effort in the 40th minute.

Howell struck at the death to punish Liam McDonald’s men for not extending their lead.

The draw leaves Solihull 23rd in the standings on eight points.

PREVIOUS MEETING

04/03/17: WHITES 0-0 SOLIHULL MOORS

Dover failed to score at Crabble for the first time this season after being held to a scoreless draw by Liam McDonald’s men.

For the visitors, Ashley Sammons shot whistled past Steve Arnold’s post and Joel Kettle headed wide from a free-kick.

Nathan Baxter tipped over Ricky Miller’s drive on the half-hour mark and the away stopper was forced to pedal backwards to stop Ricky Modeste’s cross going straight in.

Baxter was certainly the busier of the two keepers and he denied Aswad Thomas with his legs from close range.

The young goalkeeper, on-loan to Moors from Chelsea, ensured his team left with a point by palming over Ross Lafayette’s late towering header.

ACADEMY WIN KENT DERBY

Coach Mike Sandmann’s Academy registered their first National Youth Alliance League win of the season after beating Maidstone 3-2 in the Kent derby at Crabble on Wednesday.

Jack Cussen, Ryan Kingsford and Jack Smith scored the goals to secure the win against the defending champions.

Dover opened the scoring after Kingsford slotted home Jordan Bartlett’s free-kick.

They doubled the lead through Cussen following some impressive build-up play between Shusanta Rai, Smith and Marshall Wratten.

Man-of-the-match Smith added the third after half-time before the visitors struck twice to reduce the deficit.

But Sandmann’s side held on to earn three points and remain unbeaten this season after drawing against Bromley in the first game.

VIDEO: MATCH REACTION

Goalkeeper Coach Lee Hook talks to the camera after Whites 1-1 draw with Guiseley at Nethermoor Park on Saturday.

NORTEY STUNNER EARNS POINT FOR WHITES

Whites drew 1-1 at Guiseley thanks to a stunning first-half equaliser from Nortei Nortey.

The midfielder curled home a sumptious 20-yard effort in the 40th minute to cancel out John Rooney’s deflected free-kick 11 minutes earlier.

Both sides fought for a winner after the break, but the points were shared at a chilly Nethermoor Park.

The home side started strongly and Rob Atkinson nodded Rooney’s free-kick narrowly wide

The forward then tried himself moments later, but could only strike the top of the crossbar with a thunderous effort from close in.

But shortly after Walker tipped over Kayode Odejayi’s header from a corner, Rooney had better luck with his next effort

The playmaker’s set-piece struck the visiting wall and spun into the net past a stranded Mitch Walker to put the hosts ahead.

Dover’s stopper then somehow denied Jake Lawlor on the half-hour mark, tipping the defender’s header onto the post with his defence able to clear the danger afterwards.

And that save proved crucial as Athletic levelled moments later with their first shot on target.

Nortey, who had already blazed two shots from distance over, collected Kadell Daniel’s pass and fired home.

Sub Reece Thompson, on after Raul Correira was stretched off with a serious looking injury following a collision with Giancarlo Gallifuoco, shot just wide when well placed.

Manny Parry headed just past his own post in first half stoppage time and claims for a handball against Ryan Bird in his own box from the resulting corner were waved away by referee Andrew Miller.

Bird and Daniel both fired efforts directly at Lions keeper Joe Green after the restart and Mitch Pinnock was unable to beat the goalie from a tight angle after latching onto Bird’s flick-on.

The hosts almost won the match late on after Thompson robbed Connor Essam, but the striker could only find the side-netting when shooting towards the near post.

There was one last chance for Paul Cox’s men, but Walker was well-positioned to get in the way of Lawlor’s diving header from Rooney’s free-kick.

The draw sees Whites drop one place in the table to third, one point behind latest leaders Sutton United.

Earlier Chris Kinnear named the same line-up that started last Saturday’s 4-0 home win against Chester.  Paul Lewis, signed on loan from Cambridge on Friday, was named as substitute in place of Chris Lewington.

Dover’s next game is against Solihull Moors at Crabble on 30th September. Kick off 3pm.

Guiseley: Green, Lowe(c), Palmer, Lawlor, Hatfield, Rooney, Molyneux, (Hurst 76) Correia (Thompson 37), Odejayi, East, Atkinson.

Subs not used:  Maxted, Wesolowski, Mulhern.

Dover: Walker, Passley, Ilesanmi, Gallifuoco, Parry, Essam, Brundle(c), Pinnock, Bird (Sho-Silva 88), Nortey (Lewis 54), Daniel (Allen 70).

Subs not used: Richards, Fazakerley.

Attendance:  805

WHITES MAKE LOAN SIGNING

Dover Athletic are delighted to announce the loan signing of Cambridge United central midfielder Paul Lewis.

The 22-year-old will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s National League clash at Guiseley.

Lewis joined Cambridge on a three-and-a-half year contract from Macclesfield Town for an undisclosed fee last January and made 13 appearances last season.

He scored 17 goals in 108 National League games for the Silkmen, including a hat-trick against Tranmere Rovers in his final game at the Moss Rose.

Lewis will wear the number 21 shirt.

Welcome to Crabble Paul!

ROCK THE NIGHT AWAY IN THE CENTRE SPOT

Music fans will have a unique opportunity to see one of the legends of British rock music up close and personal when the Strawbs take to the stage in the Centre Spot at Crabble next month.

The special one-off gig at the home of Dover Athletic on Sunday, October 15th, is part of the European leg of their ‘Hero & Heroine’ tour.

The album of the same name has been listed by Rolling Stone magazine as ‘one of the 50 greatest progressive rock albums of all time’ and it is the band’s biggest seller worldwide.

They have sold three million albums worldwide, including Bursting At The Seams,’ ‘Grave New World,’ and the beloved ‘Hero and Heroine,’ since their formation in 1967.

Founder member Dave Cousins, who has been described by All Music Guide as ‘the most talented Dylan-influenced songwriter to come out of England’, is also a personal friend of Dover Athletic chairman Jim Parmenter.

The band, who are often mentioned in the same breath as progressive rock bands such as Yes, King Crimson, and The Moody Blues, actually started out 50 years ago as a bluegrass-based trio called the Strawberry Hill Boys.

That same year, the group — now rechristened the Strawbs, and doing repertory well beyond the bounds of bluegrass music.

In 1969, the Strawbs were signed to A&M Records and cut their first album, the acoustic-textured ‘Strawbs,’ that same year.

Since then, the band went on to have seven consecutive albums in the Billboard Top 200 in the United States.

The current Strawbs line-up comprises of Cousins, lead guitarist Dave Lambert, bass player Chas Cronk, and drummer Tony Fernandez, who recorded and toured together in the 1970s.

They will be joined by keyboard virtuoso Dave Bainbridge of Iona, a band whose mystical blend of rock, folk, Celtic and ambient music has endeared them to audiences across Europe and North America for the last 25 years.

This performance promises to be a remarkable evening spanning Progressive Rock and English Folk across the decades – do NOT miss out!

There will a limited release of tickets for this intimate night.

Tickets are £16 and are available from the reception at Crabble Stadium (open Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm) AND online from the DAFC Direct
