DAFC REVIEW: SEPTEMBER

DAFC REVIEW: SEPTEMBER

SEPTEMBER was a successful month for Dover; playing five fixtures and winning four of them, picking up 12 out of 15 points in the process.

Most memorably would be wins over two of this season’s early title contenders and taking all three points in Dover’s first ever clash against York City.

*BS* Southport 0-1 Dover *BF*

After the initial seven games, Dover were in 12th position with 10 points to their name and following two defeats in a row, managed to take all three points away to Southport.

Ricky Modeste scored a third minute goal with an early header to win the match on a cold and wet day on Merseyside. Dover had faced the Yellows on four previous occasions without victory and so the win was all the sweeter for the team.

With Whites moving up to 10th place in the table, the next fixture televised live on BT Sport would prove to be a test of how the team might perform this season, with a tough home game against top of the league Forest Green Rovers.

*BS*Dover 4-3 Forest Green Rovers*BF*

Matters didn’t start terribly well for the Whites, conceding an early goal in the seventh minute.

However, the team rallied and managed to claw a goal back only five minutes later through Ricky Miller.

Dover would go into the half time break all square and it didn’t take long for Whites to go ahead after Miller slotted home from the penalty spot two minutes following the restart.

However, Rovers soon pegged Dover back in the 49th minute in what was turning out to be a very entertaining game at Crabble.

It would take a sublime lob shot from summer signing Ross Lafayette to regain the narrow lead over the opposition, who Dover had faced in the play offs last season.

Yet again Rovers levelled late on in the game, making it 3-3 in the 85th minute of play.

Not to be denied though were a determined and focused Dover, no less Miller who would step up to complete his stunning hat-trick in the 87th minute to seal all three points for Dover in a seven-goal thriller.

The win ended Forest Green’s six-game winning streak and moved Whites up to eighth, just two points of the play off positions.

*BS*Dagenham 2-0 Dover *BF*

Whites faced a tricky tie against Dagenham & Redbridge just three days after an emphatic victory over one of the league’s title contenders.

However, the Tuesday night fixture against the Daggers would prove to be a difficult game with Whites conceding twice in the first half; ending Dover’s hopes of a third win on the spin.

Dover weren’t without their chances with Lafayette shooting wide from close range, and Aswad Thomas’ header being cleared of the Dagenham goal line.

Ever present defender Richard Orlu pulled up with a hamstring injury in the second half of the match and Ira Jackson Jnr came on to make his debut for the club.

Whites slipped to 10th following this defeat and now turned their attentions to another away fixture at a previous League Two side, York City.

*BS*York City 0-1 Dover*BF*

The match between Dover Athletic and York City would be the first ever meeting between the two sides; one that the Whites would be looking to win.

Ricky Miller would prove to be the difference between the sides this time round, with his 20th minute strike and his seventh goal in the Vanarama National League so far this season.

Dover had missed a couple of glorious chances in the game, with Jack Parkinson missing from two yards out and Lafayette’s shot going inches wide in stoppage time in the second half.

Victory at York City’s Bootham Crescent ground lifted the club to eighth place with 19 points.

*BS*Dover 2-0 Lincoln City *BF*

Having faced off the challenge of a former League side in the form of York City, Dover would host a Lincoln City side that were only two points off the top and three points ahead of Whites.

One member of the Imps’ line-up that Dover fans were familiar with was Sean Raggett, making his return to Crabble following his move to Lincoln this summer.

Raggett appeared for Dover more than 70 times following Dover’s promotion back to the Vanarama National League, but would face his old teammates in this game.

Dover came out of the traps eager to show their intent early on and an early header from captain Jamie Grimes gave Whites the perfect start early on to settle any pre-match nerves.

Grimes’ powerful header from Sammy Moore’s corner-kick was the first he had scored in over a year.

Dover seemed to dominate the game, with Lincoln not registering a shot on target until half way through the second half.

Dover’s forwards were in scintillating form and the win was wrapped up by Moses Emmanuel in the 53rd minute, who exchanged passes with Lafayette before curling his shot into the corner of the Lincoln goal to make it 2-0.

This was Emmanuel’s third goal of the season for Dover and the victory moved Whites to joint fifth on points with Lincoln City.

WHITES MAKE TRIPLE SWOOP

DOVER Athletic completed a hat-trick of signings on Friday, including former West Ham United youngster Amos Nasha.

The 21-year-old midfielder was released by the Hammers last summer after making one first team appearance.

He will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round qualifying tie at Burgess Hill Town.

Nasha made his senior debut for West Ham in the Europa League first qualifying round win against FC Lusitans in Andorra in July 2015.

London-born Nasha joined West Ham when he was 12 after being released by Tottenham Hotspur.

He appeared for the Hammers’ under-18s while still a schoolboy in the 2011/12 season.

His career in east London also saw him make 31 appearances in the under-21 Premier League.

Nasha will be joined in the squad by the two other signings, Dover Athletic Academy youngsters Stan Waller and Christopher Barnard.

Waller is a goalkeeper while Barnard is a midfielder.

Welcome to Crabble, Amos, Stan and Christopher!

MANAGER Chris Kinnear has received a much-needed fitness boost with goalkeepers Mitch Walker and Steve Arnold both in contention to play in the FA Cup clash at Burgess Hill Town on Saturday.

Walker (leg) was in doubt after getting injured during the defeat at Gateshead last Saturday while Arnold (ankle) has been absent since the loss at Chester a week earlier.

Ricky Modeste is also fit to play against the Ryman Premier League side after missing the past four matches while Sam Magri is back from international duty with the Malta under 21’s.

But it’s not all good news for Whites as they aim to reach the first round for the fourth consecutive season.

Aswad Thomas and Moses Emmanuel are both suspended while midfielders Chris Kinnear jnr and Leyton Orient loanee Sammy Moore will also both be missing at the Green Elephant Stadium.

Kinnear has a back injury while Moore’s parent club won’t let him play in the fourth round qualifying tie.

Dover’s other loanee, Eastleigh’s Ayo Oblieye is available to play at a ground where Whites have tasted FA Cup success before.

Goals from Andy Hessenthaler and Matt Carruthers sealed a 2-0 win in September 2007.

Whites also won both Ryman 1 South league meetings between the sides that season 1-0 with both goals scored by Jimmy Dryden.

JAKE LEBERL HONEST IN DEFEAT

JAKE LEBERL HONEST IN DEFEAT

ALL looked good for Dover after 35 minutes at the Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday.

Jack Parkinson’s first goal of the season had given Whites the lead after they had started the game with plenty of intent.

Those opening 35 minutes offered plenty of promise and the shock of the 5-0 drubbing at Chester the previous Saturday appeared set to be erased.

That was until the game dramatically turned on its head, when the hosts equalised less than 60 seconds after Parkinson’s fine strike.

Dover’s advantage was lost before half-time as the Heed went into the break with a 2-1 lead – it was something they never relinquished, eventually winning 4-2.

And assistant Dover manager Jake Leberl could not hide his disappointment after watching Whites slump to their second heavy away defeat of the week.

“I thought we started well and I couldn’t really see them scoring,” he said.

“We got ourselves ahead and then, well.

“Obviously you celebrate scoring a goal, but you have got to regain your focus straight away – we didn’t.

“The same happened at Torquay and then Chester and I had hoped that we would have learned that lesson but we got caught yet again.

“It was very disappointing to concede an equaliser so quickly and such a simple one at that.

“They got their tails up after that and we gave away another sloppy goal just before half-time – that killed us really.”

But despite Dover trailing, Leberl didn’t think it was game over.

He said: “I thought we had another goal in us as we had caused them a few problems in the first half.

“I was confident we’d get back in the game.

“Then we let in another soft goal straight after the break and that was a terrible time to do so.

“The lad just run through the middle of us before scoring and that was again another really disappointing goal to concede.

“The fourth goal was another simple one – ball played into feet before a turn and shot.

“No one is happy with the performance and we know we’ve got to work hard to remedy it.”

PREVIEW: GATESHEAD VS WHITES

PREVIEW: GATESHEAD VS WHITES

DOVER Athletic left-back Aswad Thomas has fond memories of playing at the Gateshead International Stadium last season.

And so do the 46 Dover fans who made the gruelling 692 mile round trip to Tyneside.

Thomas scored his first goal for Whites in the 3-2 win, a second consecutive victory for boss Chris Kinnear’s side at the venue.

In fact, Dover have a perfect record against the Heed, winning all four games against them since winning promotion to non league’s top-flight a couple of seasons ago.

Gateshead will start the game 11th on the National League ladder, three places and four points behind Whites.

But the hosts have not enjoyed the best of times in front of their home fans of late.

They are winless in their past three home games after a 1-0 defeat against North Ferriby United was followed by goalless draws against Solihull Moors and Torquay United.

*BS*WHAT IS GATESHEAD MANAGER NEIL ASPIN SAYING ABOUT DOVER? *BF*

“Dover are slightly similar to us in the respect that they can also beat anyone on their day, as they’ve shown already this season,” Aspin told doverathletic.com this week.

“They’re a well-managed side with a big man up front and they always make it difficult for their opponents.

“They were beaten heavily at Chester last week but I’m certain that was just a one-off because they quickly bounced back with a good 3-1 win over Sutton on Tuesday, so we’re anticipating a tough match.”

*BS*GATESHEAD’S RECENT FORM *BF*

Gateshead ended a run of four games without a goal courtesy of an impressive 1-0 win at Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night.

After beginning the campaign in blistering form – including a 6-1 rout of York City on Tyneside – the Heed’s momentum had stalled ahead of their trip to Prenton Park.

Following that thrashing of the Minstermen, Neil Aspin’s side recorded just two wins in their next nine outings, and also equalled the club’s longest barren stretch in front of goal since their return to the National League in 2009.

But, Sam Jones’ 51st-minute strike proved sufficient for Gateshead in midweek, who will now look to end a three-game winless stretch on their own turf.
