HATCH OF THE DAY – HATCHER SIGNS

Hatcher puts pen to paper on his first deal.

Academy student Archie Hatcher this weeks puts pen to paper to sign his first contract with the club, following in the footsteps of teammate Henry Young. The young forward had made a couple of appearances as a substitute earlier in the campaign before being handed his first start in the last round of the FA Cup at home to Hastings United. His performance earned him the Man of the Match on Twitter and prompted his manager to select him again for the away trip to top of the table Bath City, where Hatcher repaid the faith shown in him by his manager by scoring an absolute worldie of a goal. It was a fantastic strike.

Mike Sandmann was delighted with the news, having brought through another player from the academy. ‘Once again I’m extremely pleased for Archie as I know how hard he works behind the scenes day in day out to develop. ‘It makes it more special Archie being a local lad from Dover and developing our home grown talent. He’s on cloud 9 at the moment after his first league goal away to Bath City and what a way to score your first goal. It was great to see Youngy in the build up to the goal and have that Academy connection filtering in to the first team.’

Congratulations, Hatch.

BATH CITY 2 DOVER ATHLETIC 2

A Spirited performance as Whites hold top of the league.

Mitch Brundle’s team headed to the West Country for the first time this season and were unlucky not to come back with more than just a point. If you had offered the Gaffer a point before kick-off against high flying Bath City then I’m sure he would have snapped your hand off but he would have been disappointed, having given away a two goal lead.

It was a bright start from the visitors who were kicking up the big bath hill and had an early chance when Iffy Allen blasted over the crossbar. The hosts began to have a spell of pressure with some neat link up play and dangerous balls into the Dover penalty area, but fortunately for the Whites (Navy Blues), there was no one there from Bath to capitalise. Brundle’s side had pace on either flank with Allen and Lock probing down their respective wings.

It was the dangerous Lock who bamboozled his marker before cutting back inside onto his left foot and digging out a cross which was headed away by the home defence. The ball bounced safely outside the penalty area and was picked up by the unmarked Hatcher who sent it back with interest via the top left hand corner to put the visitors into the lead. It was a fantastic strike from the academy student who was starting to find his feet in the number 10 role.

Bath nearly equalised before the break when first they were denied by Billy Terrell and then by a wonderful goal line clearance from John Oyenuga ensued that Dover would head into changing rooms with a slender lead. It was a lead that was doubled just before the hour when Paris Lock weaved into the penalty area and was judged to have been bundled over by the home defence. It seemed a little harsh but did we care? Iffy Allen for the second week running placed his spot kick, cool as you like, past the home keeper.

Mitch Brundle’s squad is young, with many not having experience at this level but they will soon know what its all about following the last 30 minutes at Twerton Park, where the home side threw everything at us, including the kitchen sink. Bath City are top for a reason at the moment, with a never say die attitude and they got their rewards in both the 66th and 77th minute as they clawed their way back into the game via Thomas and Wilson.

With Bath now looking for a win, it was vital for the Whites to cling on to a point. Wave after wave of home attack swept over the Dover backline but the defence, despite being breached twice, stood firm in the dying moments. Peter Ojemen was dismissed for two yellow cards and will now miss the FA Cup Clash with Haringey Borough as he was shown his marching orders with just minutes left on the clock.

When the referee signalled the end of the match it was both frustration and relief that swept over the squad. A good point on the road against a Bath City side who are sitting pretty on the top of the pile. It was a shame to throw away a two goal lead but again it comes down to experience. It will come.

I think its two points dropped rather than one gained. I’m disappointed for the players who were excellent. They didn’t deserve to finish the game with just the one point. It feels like a loss. They gave me everything and deserved the three points. – Mitch Brundle

UP NEXT – BATH CITY

The Whites make their first long away trip of the campaign.

Dover make their first trip to the west country this Saturday when the Whites head to high flying Bath City to renew old rivalries. For fans of an older persuasion, you will no doubt remember the 1989-90 season when we were stripped of promotion due to Crabble seemingly not up to standard, only for Bath to take our place in the then GM Vauxhall Conference, following an exhilarating title between the two clubs. Just two years later and the Whites made amends, joining City in the fifth tier of English football.

Mitch Brundle takes his side to Twerton Park looking to add more points on the board but will find a City side that is absolutely flying at the summit of the National League South. To add fuel to the fire, Bath are holding a ‘Pay what you like’, Community Day, with punters asked to pay a minimum £2 on the gate. This will no doubt ensure that the crowd will be bolstered with such a good deal in place to add to an already carnival atmosphere.

CLUB STATEMENT – SUPPORTERS BEHAVIOUR

The club would like to issue the following statement.

SUPPORTER BEHAVIOUR

The vocal support for the team this season has been loud and proud and greatly appreciated by Mitch and the team. However, we are receiving a growing number of complaints from supporters about the language and behaviour of a very small minority of younger supporters. This is having a detrimental effect on sponsorship and crowd numbers. The Club has been monitoring the situation and verbal warnings have been issued, but these appear to be having no effect.

The club’s policy on the matter is attached to this statement –

Whilst vocal support is and will always be greatly appreciated, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. There will be no further verbal warnings issued and offenders will be removed from the stadium receive a ban and any season tickets will be rescinded with no refund. If Police assistance in this matter is required, it will be called upon.

Please continue to support the team but always consider others.

DOVER ATHLETIC 3 HASTINGS UNITED 2

The Whites march into the next round.

Dover got back to winning ways on Saturday as the FA Cup provided a welcome distraction from the league. Hastings came to the Megger Community Stadium in good form and boasted a wealth of National League experience in their side but it was the home side who were the more dominant in the opening 45 minutes.

New signing Paris Lock, looked lively as he made his debut on the right wing, teasing his man before heading into the penalty area where he was brought down. The referee pointed to the spot and Iffy Allen placed his spot kick high into the roof of the net. With Hastings now chasing the game, their task became even harder when in the Sam Okoye was shown a second yellow, this time for kicking the ball away, on the half hour.

Dover cranked up the pressure and should have gone into the break with the cushion of another couple of goals with both Zidan Sutherland and Archie Hatcher coming close with chances. It was the youngster who was making his first start that impressed the most. Despite getting booked early on for a rash challenge, the academy product looked dangerous as he found little pockets of space outside the Hastings defence.

We are in the hat and that’s what we were looking for – Mitch Brundle

The second half began like the first half ended, with Dover pushing for a second goal, but it wasn’t until the manager made his changes that the game was put to bed. George Nikaj and Luke Baptiste both entered the fray in the second half and made an immediate impact. Nikaj first by glancing a lovely header from an Ojemen cross before some nifty footwork from Baptiste, sat down the Hastings keeper, and rolled the ball into the net.

It was a good rear guard display until a nervy last five minutes meant that the Whites were making hard work of the performance, with the referee awarding Hastings a penalty and then a break away goal brought the scores back to 3-2. Despite the final efforts of the travelling side, Dover held on to claim a victory that now sees them in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.

UP NEXT – HASTINGS UNITED (FA CUP EDITION)

Whites head into FA Cup action.

This week sees the welcome distraction from league duty as we head into FA Cup action with Hastings United coming to town. There have been some memorable FA Cup matches over the years with the likes of Oxford United, Aldershot Town, Peterborough United, MK Dons, Cheltenham Town, Huddersfield Town and most fondly remembered would be the televised Third Round tie against Crystal Palace.

Some results have been euphoric where has some have been not so easy on the eye. There have been many upsets with the Whites being on both sides of the coin but I’m sure you can all remember that sweet, sweet day at Priestfield when we turned over Gillingham in their own backyard. Then there was the late winner from Ruel Sotiriou against Southend United. I mean I could go on and on.

Is it a massive game? Yes, of course. I want to have a cup run.

The FA Cup has always excited me as a player and, as a kid, I watched it.’ – Mitch Brundle

While it’s always nice to take a trip down memory lane, football is played in the here and now and Mitch Brundle will be desperate to get his FA Cup maiden voyage as boss off to a flyer. He will have to do it without the outward departing Chevron McLean and Mike Olarewaju, who left the club this week by mutual consent. We wish them well in the future and thank them for their efforts in a white shirt.

Henry Young put pen to paper on a deal following his 18th birthday. Congratulations, Youngy. Over to you now lads, lets make sure we are in the hat for the next round.

YOUNG UP TRUMPS – HENRY PUTS PEN TO PAPER

Academy product signs on the dotted line.

Henry Young signed his first contract with the club this week, following his 18th birthday. The young midfielder has made 5 appearances so far this campaign, including his debut away at Slough Town when an injury in the warm up to Josh Anifowose meant that the manager would give Young the nod. Playing next to the experienced James Dunne has helped the youngster grow into his role and we look forward to watching Henry develop as the season continues.

Mike Sandmann from the academy was quick to heap praise on the midfielder. ‘I couldn’t be more pleased for Youngy and adds to the list of Academy boys progressing into our first team. This club has been great at giving these young players opportunities and Youngy has taken his with both hands. He is still only going to keep improving and has the right character and attributes to have a great career. At the Academy we will continue the hard work developing these young players and hopefully we continue to introduce a few more as the season progresses.’

Congratulations Youngy, and good luck for the rest of the season.
