WHITES ABROAD DOUBLE

WHITES ABROAD DOUBLE

*BS*In the latest of our series on fans showing their support for the club around the world, DAFCtv cameraman James Harvey and California-based Roger Castle share their stores.*BF*

Above is a photo of James Harvey on the top of La Grande Motte near the Glacier De LA Vanoise during a recent snowboarding holiday in the Alps.

James said: “I was following the Bath game on *Link2* before having this photo taken – odd how I can get five bars of phone signal on top of a mountain but only three bars in River!”

*BS*Roger Castle, based in Mission Viejo, California reminisces about his time at Dover Athletic and following the club from the other side of the world:*BF*

“My family has deep roots at Crabble; my Dad was on the Board in the Roy Little and Jack Clover era, and I played in the reserves… with my Dad on the Board I played a lot!!

“I have great memories of Dover in the sixties, going over the Northrop bridge, and cold nights at Crabble training.

“In those days the players came down from London at the weekends in pre-season, and I remember a midfielder Brian Kelly. We went for a run along the promenade, up to the lighthouse, and when we got out of sight, Brian’s wife picked him up in the car and Clover thought Brian was superman as he beat all of us back by miles!

*Q1*”I now live in Southern California and am very involved in youth football. I am President of a kids club called SoCal Athletic (funnily enough) and keep up to date with Dover via the website.

“Football over here is getting better but I still spend more time watching the television than going to Los Angeles to watch games. I saw Beckham a few times and am glad he has gone back to play some real football, but being a Gooner he never did play real football!!

“Brian and Janet Butcher (former Youth Section chairman and secretary) come in the Summer for some sun and we spend hours over a bottle of Tequila talking about the old days!

“I look on the website at the ground and try to see my old footprints up and down that left wing, it brings tears to my eyes, and so did the bucket of cold water Jimmy Blakey used as his motivational piece. Regardless of the location of an injury, his placement of the old sponge changed my voice forever.

“God Bless Dover.”

WATT SIGNS FOR STONES

WATT SIGNS FOR STONES

*BS*Defender Steve Watt has been transferred to Maidstone United on a permanent basis following his recent loan spell.*BF*

Watt came to Crabble at the start of last season but he has suffered with injuries and joined the Ryman South leaders on loan recently to gain match fitness.

However, Whites boss Chris Kinnear has brought in defenders Tyrone Sterling and Michael Kamara to bolster his squad, leaving Steve unlikely to feature.

Maidstone were keen to make Watt’s signing permanent and all parties have now agreed to the transfer. The club would like to thank Steve for his service and wish him all the best for the future.

CHRIS HAILS THE FANS

*BS*Chris Kinnear praised the fans’ support after Saturday’s abandonment at Salisbury due to hail and rain, and is looking forward to Tuesday night’s home game against Bromley.*BF*

The Dover boss was disappointed Saturday’s game was called off due to heavy rain, more so for the 150 loyal fans that made the three hour journey to Salisbury: “Myself and the players were happy to carry on, but to be fair, it was really coming down and hailing really hard.

“The lads are more upset for the Dover supporters, who were actually louder than the home fans.”

Despite the discontinuation of the match, Kinnear was pleased with his team’s efforts during a goalless first half: “The conditions were not easy, but the lads stood up admirably and we had the better chances. Ricky (Modeste) was the man of the match.”

Another player that impressed despite the heavy rainfall was recent signing Michael Kamara, who has signed until the end of the season from Ryman Premier Carshalton Athletic:

“Michael had a nice debut. He had trials with Tranmere and Dagenham & Redbridge earlier in the season and I’m looking forward to see what he can do. It’s good to have utility players and he will give us more balance across the back four as he can play at right back or at centre back.”

The signing of Kamara also allows Kinnear to continue to vary formations and tactics: “It’s all about winning games and I pick the team suited to who we are playing – I’m not even adverse to changing a winning team. Kevin Raine does a lot of scouting and will give me a comprehensive report that I can translate to the players. We still play the way we want, but it helps not to have any shocks.”

Tuesday night sees the visit of Bromley to Crabble and the Dover boss is under no illusions as to the difficulty ahead against a team that has already tasted success at Crabble earlier this season in the FA Cup: “On a good day, Bromley will beat anyone in the league. They have a lot of flair players.”

Ben May has flu and Barry Cogan had to be substituted on Saturday due to a groin injury but both hope to be involved against Bromley.

One player who won’t be part of Tuesday’s squad is Terry Dixon, who has joined Thurrock on a month’s loan. Kinnear said: “He’s been down recently and because of injuries I’ve not had the opportunity to see him play. So we shall see how he does.”
