PREVIEW: TORQUAY VS WHITES

BOSS ON FIRST STEPS

*BS*Newly appointed Dover manager, Chris Kinnear, is delighted to be back at the helm of the club he managed so successfully between 1985 – 1995.*BF*

He said: “I am looking forward to it, the club is so well run. Everyone is really friendly and there are still some people from when I was here before, as well as some new faces.”

Proud to manage Dover once again, Kinnear expects the same from his playing staff: “Players need to care about playing for Dover and not just collecting their cheques. Everyone needs to be together.”

Chris was also encouraged by the immediate enthusiasm of Dover fans and pointed out how crucial their support will be over the coming months: “I am pleased people think myself and Jake (Leberl) can do a good job. We will aim to show them they were right.”

Kinnear will inherit arguably one of the best squads in the league and is happy to give every player a fresh start: “People have given me some advice, but Jake and I need to make our own minds up. I like to get along with people and everyone will start on a clean slate.

“Sometimes players suit a different style of play. I am hoping everyone will be able to pull together, if not then we will reassess. But I am not here to spend or waste the club’s money.”

Similarly on the tactical front, Kinnear will not be be rushing into any decisions: “The style and formation is influenced by the players you have. Everyone needs to play for their team-mates and we will do everything we can to win games. When we have the ball we will attack and when we don’t we will defend.”

Though he is yet to visit the Academy in Faversham, the new boss is looking forward to using its potential: “It’s good to have young lads in the squad and have a young, athletic side. Hopefully some will come through into the first team.”

With respect of this season’s final goal, he was very clear as to the target: “To get as many points as possible. Though teams below us have games in hand and can catch up, if we win games, we will get away from them. We might even win the league, who knows?”

KINNEAR APPOINTED BOSS

*BS*Dover Athletic are pleased to announce the return of club legend Chris Kinnear as first-team manager and former player Jake Leberl as his assistant.*BF*

Kinnear and Leberl come to Crabble from Margate FC to replace Nicky Forster, who has been placed on gardening leave. Steve Brown remains on the club’s staff.

The decision to replace Forster was made at a board meeting on Friday, following Whites’ poor run of form and disappointing average points tally, something that the directors did not see changing under his management.

New boss Chris Kinnear previously managed Dover Athletic from 1985 to 1995, successfully guiding the club from the foot of the Southern League to the Conference, winning the Southern League Southern Division and then the Southern League Premier Division twice.

Since leaving Crabble in 1995, Kinnear joined Margate and led the club to two promotions in three seasons, once again reaching the Conference. The Gate finished 8th and 10th in their first two seasons there and enjoyed two memorable FA Cup runs. Chris left Margate in 2005 and became a scout for clubs such as Wolverhampton Wanderers.

*Lpic1*He returned to Hartsdown Park as manager in 2011, quickly stabilising the club on the field. This season he has established Margate as promotion contenders in the Ryman Premier Division.

Kinnear brings his assistant at Margate Jake Leberl with him, three years after Jake’s second spell as a player at Crabble.

Leberl originally joined Dover Athletic from Crewe Alexandra in 1997 and excelled at centre back, voted player of the season in 2002 before leaving to play for Chris Kinnear at Margate.

Jake went on to win the Conference title with Dagenham & Redbridge in 2007 before enjoying back-to-back promotions with AFC Wimbledon. Andy Hessenthaler then brought him back to Crabble for brief spell in 2009/10. He has been assistant manager at Margate since Chris Kinnear’s return in April 2011.
