DARREN ANSWERS BACK

HESS RARING TO GO

*BS*ANDY HESSENTHALER and his No 2 Darren Hare will put the Dover squad through their paces for the first time tonight – and cast their eyes over a number of trailists.

*BF*The Whites player-boss, back from his summer holiday this week, cannot wait to get cracking on plotting a way out of Ryman One this season.

He said: “It’s great to get back down to training again. There’s going to be a lot of players coming down too on trial. Things are progressing well with our plans for next season.

“We need another six players – but, of course, need to balance that out with the need to stay within the club’s playing budget.

“We had some good players in the squad already and added quality to that – and now we just can’t wait to put the final bits of the jigsaw in place before getting to the job at hand.”

Hess confirmed the club are considering to make a bid to a Ryman Premier club for a central defender, who is currently transfer listed. Dover Athletic will not be going public on the identity of the player because he is under contract.

But the Whites player-boss said: “He’s a player who I’ve had good reports about for the past year or so. We’re hoping to make a bid but we’re not going to pay silly money – but he’s a player we would like. He’s a centre-half but it’s all going to come down to money, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

Full audio interview with Andy Hessenthaler is available on our DAFCradio platform.

FA TROPHY: GUISELEY AT HOME

FA ANNOUNCE CUP DRAWS

*BS*Dover Athletic will face Sussex opposition in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup this coming season.*BF*

The Football Association’s draw has thrown-up an away trip to either Redhill or Sidley on Saturday, September 1.

The experience may well be a culture shock for some of Whites’ new players as they adapt to football at non-league’s Step 4 level.

Redhill would seem the most likely opposition for Dover, given that former Deal boss Tommy Sampson has just taken over as manager of ‘The Lobsters’.

Should Athletic get through that tricky away tie, more travelling will be done in the 1st Qualifying Round with a journey to one of Burgess Hill, Westfield and Banstead on Saturday, September 15.

*BS*Other interesting 1QR ties include:*BF*
– Tooting & Mitcham/Cray v AFC Wimbledon
– Farnham/Ringmer/Chatham v Margate
– Maidstone v Erith & B./Ashford (Kent)
– Hastings v Ramsgate

In the FA Trophy, Dover have been given a home tie against Potters Bar in the Preliminary Round on Saturday, October 6.

Should Whites progress an away trip to either Maldon or Croydon Athletic will await Hess’s men.

GORE COMES BACK HOME

GORE COMES BACK HOME

*BS*SAM GORE has come back home to Dover Athletic after his release from Gillingham this summer.

*BF*The left-sided defender becomes Andy Hessenthaler’s fourth summer signing.

Gore, who lives in River, just two minutes away from Crabble, put pen to paper today (Monday) after Whites beat off the challenge of Welling United and several other clubs for his signature.

The 18-year-old said: “I’m delighted to be back. With Hess and Darren Hare in charge, it wasn’t a difficult decision to make.

“I want to be part of a successful side this year and can’t wait to report to pre-season training.”

Gore came through the Dover youth scheme – but was signed by Gillingham on scholarship forms two years ago. However, he was released this summer and Whites chief Hessenthaler was quick to snap him up.

FRANNIE’S HUNGRY FOR GOALS

*BS*FRANNIE COLLIN is excited about the challenge that lies ahead after signing for Dover Athletic.

*BF*Collin, 20, was released by Gillingham this summer but is hoping to show them what they will be missing by helping to shoot Dover to promotion this season.

He said: “I’m hoping to get 25 goals minimum – and can’t wait for the season to start. I’m hungry and want to help take Dover up this season.

“They’re a good club and with Andy Hessenthaler and Darren Hare at the helm we have two good people who can guide the club in the right direction.

“I felt I didn’t get a fair chance at Gillingham. I was disappointed to get released but that’s history now – and I’m looking forward to this new challenge.”
