WHITES TRIO COMMIT TO CLUB

BACK TO BASICS AFTER WORCESTER HAMMERING

A back-to-basics policy is likely to be the Whites strategy this weekend as they face Hinckley United in an important game in their quest for qualification for Conference South.

A clear-the-air meeting was held before training on Tuesday to discuss the disappointing 5-1 hammering at Worcester but that has now been forgotten as they look to pick up the 15 points they feel is essential for qualification.

A four goal blast from City on Saturday just after half-time saw a shellshocked Whites easily defeated as the nerves regarding that top 13 finish start to emerge.

Keeper Paul Hyde, who has fought back into the side after another injury to rival Dave Wietecha, believes the Whites are easily good enough to qualify but all the players have to start performing.

He stated: “We are being punished for sloppy mistakes at the moment and that has got to change. We have some experienced players in the squad and along with the younger players we all have to start to perform. This weekend against Hinckley and the Chippenham game (the following Saturday) are vital for us and we need to pick up the points.”

The bright side for the Whites is that sides around them failed to pick up the points and they still lie within the top 13, though a win against the Knitters on Saturday will settle a few worries that have emerged among the supporters.

“We need to pick up points and the performances are secondary to that,” said Boss Richard Langley. “The expectation at this club is very high and I know the supporters were disappointed with the Worcester game but we performed poorly for a 15 minute spell and got punished. We need to be strong against a Hinckley side that are also desperate for Conference qualification. There are no easy games in this league and we need to stand up and get a result.”

Dover are without Jamie Day who serves a one match suspension, while Jones Awuah’s loan has ended as Gillingham were unwilling to extend it due to their on-going injury problems. Langley will also have to decide between Hyde and Dave Wietcha for the goalkeeping slot. The big stopper was due to play in the reserves on Wednesday to test his injured knee.

Jamie Day has been stripped of taking penalties after he missed his third of the campaign and the Whites’ fifth this season against Worcester; it is thought that either Craig Wilkins or Darren Davies will take over the duties from 12 yards.

Dover Athletic will play their Hoverspeed Stadium tenants Margate on Tuesday 23rd March (7:45pm KO) in the semi-finals of the Kent Senior Cup.

It is the first competitive meeting between the two East Kent rivals since the Whites’ relegation from the Conference two years ago.

Dover hold the upper hand in recent meetings between the two sides, having taken four points from the two Conference encounters in 2001/02, with Jimmy Aggrey’s Boxing Day strike at Hartsdown Park the only goal in the two fixtures.

Athletic also won the last cup tie between the sides with goals from Steve Norman and Matt Carruthers earning a 2-1 extra-time victory for the Whites in the 2000/01 Kent Senior Cup Second Round.

SUSPENSIONS HIT HARD

SUSPENSIONS HIT HARD

As the race for Conference 2 qualification hots up, Dover boss Richard Langley has had his job made more difficult by suspensions for three of his key players.

Captain Andy Arnott will be ruled out for four matches following his dismissal at Weymouth. He received a two match ban for the red card and a further two matches for collecting 10 or more cards this season.

Danny Chapman, who missed the first six matches of the season through suspension and a further three matches in January for a sending off at Weston-super-Mare, takes his tally into double figures with a two match ban for his dismissal at Weymouth.

Both Chapman and Arnott will begin their suspensions next weekend when the Whites visit Chippenham in the league. Midfielder Jamie Day serves a one match suspension when Athletic host Hinckley United at the Hoverspeed Stadium tomorrow.

AMADI RELEASED

Dover Athletic have confirmed the departure of Issy Amadi, the striker who signed a two-year contract at the beginning of the season after he impressed in pre-season.

The 22-year-old failed to earn a place in the Dover squad and a number of disciplinary problems regarding his lateness and failure to turn up to games from his North London home led to his contract being terminated by mutual consent. It is thought he may now link up with former Whites boss Clive Walker at Chatham.

AWUAH RECALLED

Richard Langley’s playing resources have been further depleted by the departure from Crabble of forward Jones Awuah.

The on-loan Gillingham forward has been recalled by the First Division club to help ease their injury crisis.

Awuah’s recall leaves Athletic short of attacking options following the recent departures of Tommy Tyne and fringe forwards Michael Smissen and Israel Amadi.
