THE MANAGERS REACTION

Mitch Brundle’s thoughts on the Tonbridge defeat.

We were just poor. No sugar coating around it. Man to man, eleven v eleven, their eleven was better than ours. We had a couple of players who really gave it a go whereas I don’t believe the others did. I gave them the treatment at half time, like most managers would and they came out for five minutes and were fantastic but we never really gave ourselves a chance to be in the game. In the first half we were 2-0 down before we had even got a foothold in the game, which is disappointing.

We dictated the play for large portions of the match but we just lacked that bit of penetration or the final threaded ball. We lacked the will and the want to actually run past players. Just really disappointed. I stand on the sides like the fans do and it hurts me because I am watching what they are watching and that team doesn’t represent me and that’s what I am most disappointed about.

Up till now the team have performed to a certain standard and I couldn’t really change the starting eleven. They performed against Ebbsfleet, Taunton and Hungerford, where we were undone by a freak goal from the wind. Last night just proves that deep down I know what is needed with this team and this is why there will be new additions. I have inherited this squad and the squads done well up till now but we haven’t really found that consistency. Myself and the chairman are working as hard as we can, day in day out, to try and out to the squad but when we do eventually add to the team that will mean players will have to go out.

For me it’s now time to stamp my authority on the team and as much as I hate losing, at this stage it has probably done me the world of good as now we can change the philosophy and how we want to play, the personnel I want to play, for three games I couldn’t question the lads hunger and desire.

Looking ahead to Hemel Hempstead Town.

We have a fully fit squad to choose from but be prepared for changes to be made, that’s for certain. We beat them 4-0 earlier in the season so they will have something to prove against us. In football I never like to say it but only poor teams bounce back. I want my team to be consistent throughout the season but at the moment I will be asking them to bounce back. There will be additions and changes to the squad, there will be a change to the team and I hope that we can put on a performance that will be as far away as possible of that from Tuesday night. Their manager has come in and done fantastically well, but we will try and implement our game plan and hopefully our new additions will make sure of that.

PAXMAN LOOKS TO SEAL LOAN MOVE

Mitch Brundle looks to bolster his squad with midfield options.

Dover are hopeful in securing Jack Paxman on a loan deal until the end of the season, pending FA and National League clearance. Paxman spent almost five seasons in total with Maidstone, playing regularly in the National League for them, amassing more than 150 appearances and becoming their longest-serving player in the process by the time of his departure across Kent to Ebbsfleet United.

Assured, calm and confident on the ball, Paxman is regarded as one of the foremost technical players in the league and earned the Supporters’ Player of the Year award in his first season at Ebbsfleet.

Paxman has scored four goals in 55 appearances for the Fleet and will hopefully be strutting his stuff soon at Crabble. There is a possibility of more incomings over the next couple of days as well as players moving in the other direction as the manager begins to shape his squad.

TONBRIDGE ANGELS 4 DOVER ATHLETIC 0

Dover continue their terrible record on artificial pitches with defeat in Tonbridge.

On a crisp night in Tonbridge it was the hosts who burst out of the traps the quickest. With just seven minutes on the clock Joe Turner scored to round off a neat move down Dover’s left hand side. The ball was won back in the midfield for Angels by Gard before a slide rule pass cut through Dover’s defence and Turner was in the middle waiting for the delivery which was straight into his path. The Angels midfielder took one touch, steadied himself and fired past Stuart Nelson in the Dover goal.

It could have been even worse for the Whites had Nelson not made a smart save in the third minute down to his near post. Dover looked to regain their composure after the early set back and began to string some neat passes together until the impressive Turner picked up a loose ball and sprinted down the right flank before bending in a superb cross for Jordan Greenidge to swoop down and header home. All of a sudden Mitch Brundle’s men had a mountain to climb after only fifteen minutes.

Dover’s first real chance of the game came in the 27th minute when Noah Carney dispossessed the Angels back line just inside his own half, driving towards the opposition goal and with just one defender to beat, found his shot block by the covering full back when it looked like he had already done the hard work. It was a positive sign for the Whites as Tonbridge had seemingly backed off to allow the away side to start to dominate possession with Jordan Higgs and Lee Martin getting on the ball and trying to make things happen.

Higgs was at the centre of it again, this time the saviour, clearing off his own line just moments before half time with Nelson well beaten. Heading in 2-0 down was going to be a slightly easier team talk for Brundle than 3-0 but nevertheless the gaffer’s first Vanarama South half time was going to need to be rousing one.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with the hosts nearly catching Dover cold with a rasping shot by Gard that just sailed over the crossbar. Myles Judd then took things into his own hands, bursting into the Angels penalty area and what looked like a simple ball back across the six yard box was instead fired into the side netting. It was a real sliding doors moment and would prove a costly decision as just seconds later Greenidge rounded Nelson to score his second of the night and Tonbridge Angels third.

With a flurry of substitutions made by both sides, Dover looked to get back into the tie. A neat cross by Alfie Paxman was headed straight into the hands of Henley by Martin but it was bread and butter for the home goalkeeper. At the other end, Nelson was again called into action when substitute Wood tried to beat the Dover custodian with the outside of his boot but the stopper was equal to it and pushed it away for a corner.

The gaffers philosophy with the team was clear to see with a possession based approach from Dover, who held the lion share of the ball in the second period but it was in the final third that the ball needed to be looked after and with the Whites trying to squeeze the game, Tonbridge, who were now playing on the counter attack, broke through the defence and in the final minute put the tie to bed with a neat finish by Wood.

The referee then signalled that the game was over and the home side had run out comfortable winners. A 4-0 defeat is not ideal but Rome wasn’t built in a day and we go again at the weekend when we travel to Hemel Hempstead. Better go and grab those shovels, lads.

UP NEXT – WHITES TAKE ON THE ANGELS

Dover head to Tonbridge for a midweek encounter.

We make the relatively short trip to Tonbridge tomorrow evening to face Tonbridge Angels in the Vanarama National South. Mitch Brundle will be looking to get his tenure off to a positive start after a disappointing weekend, with the match against Havant & Waterlooville being postponed at the last minute. But in football you never look back, always forward.

Tonbridge will pose a threat having beaten St Albans away in their last outing 3 – 2. Angels sit 5 places and six points higher in the table but the Whites will be looking to avenge the 2 – 1 defeat earlier on in the campaign.

We hope to see as many of you as possible at the Longmead Stadium.

Ticket prices are as follows:

  • Senior/Concession (65 & over) £12.00

HAVANT GAME IS OFF!

Match referee deems pitch unplayable

Today’s game has been called off by the match referee who is unhappy with certain parts of the pitch and has deemed it unplayable. Apologies for anyone who has already traveled to the match. We will confirm ASAP when the match will be rearranged.

HAVANT UP NEXT AT CRABBLE

Havant & Waterlooville are up next for Mitch Brundle’s Dover.

High flying Havant & Waterlooville visit Crabble tomorrow looking to continue in their bid for promotion from the Vanarama National South. Mitch Brundle will step into the home dugout at the Megger Community Stadium for the first time since being given the managers job on a permanent basis and is keen to begin his tenure with a positive result. The gaffer will be in high spirits after recent performances and will be looking for his team to kick on for the remainder of the campaign.

Dover will be looking to avenge a heavy 4 – 2 defeat back in  August at the Draper Tools Community Stadium and will hope that their efforts will be rewarded with the right result this time around. The defeat to Ebbsfleet was a sucker punch to the early work put in place by the new boss but Brundle is keen to ensure that the lads get back on track.

‘There was a level of performance in our last home game that I will expect again,’ said the manager. ‘We will need to be on our ‘A’ game. It’s up to me and Mike Sandmann to prepare the team how we want but it is also down to the players to then perform at the levels they have so far which is what we are asking of them.’

We look forward to welcoming you through the gates at Crabble. As Usual it is pay on the gate, cards are accepted.

Let’s go and get those three points, lads.

JANUARY FIXTURES – COME AND GET BEHIND THE WHITES

Check out our remaining fixtures for January

The Whites will be looking at upsetting promotion chasing Havant in our next match at Crabble before heading off to Tonbridge to face the Angels the following Tuesday, looking to reverse the defeat at home earlier on in the campaign. We then find ourselves on the road again as we head north to Hemel Hempstead to see if we can do the double over the Tudors before finishing the month with a tie against Worthing at Crabble.

We hope to see as many of you as we can both home and away to cheer on the boys in the second half of the season. As usual it is pay on the gate (card is accepted).

WHITES BOW OUT OF KENT SENIOR CUP

A much changed team saw defeat in the Kent Senior Cup.

Any dreams of a cup run in the Kent Senior Cup was ended on Tuesday night with a 2-0 defeat away to Chatham Town. Although a defeat is normally hard to swallow, blooding youngsters for the fixture can be seen as a real positive for the club. The Academy had provided nine players to feature in the match as well as a further three that had previously graduated which shows that there is a clear pathway towards the first team. It’s a great experience for those lads in getting game time and one that is crucial to their development moving forward and ideal for the new manager to cast on eye who who could make an impact in his squad.

A goal at the end of each half was enough to undo all the hard work by Dover but it wasn’t to be on a cold night in Medway. Mitch Brundle can now solely focus on the bread and butter of the league with a tough home fixture against Havant & Waterlooville to come this Saturday.

‘I thought the game was a bit scrappy and we wasn’t tidy enough in possession for what we are asking for,’ said the manager after the match. ‘We finished the game with eight academy players on the pitch at the final whistle which is fantastic. We used the game how we wanted which was to get minutes in peoples legs and also gave us a chance to look at the kids. That is no disrespect to Chatham Town or even the tournament itself but we have to have proper games where the final result actually means something and it will benefit the youngsters for their development towards the first team.’

A valiant effort by the young lads.
