KINNEAR IMPRESSED WITH DOVER ATTACK

WHITES BACK IN PLAYOFFS!

*BS*Whites romped to a 4-1 win over Lincoln City in a dominant display at Crabble on Tuesday.*BF*

A sublime Stefan Payne free kick set them on their way early on, before Ricky Miller doubled the lead after half time and Payne added a third. Lincoln pulled one back, but Miller completed the rout with a stunning long range effort.

Understandably, manager Chris Kinnear was full of praise for his players. He said: “It could have been seven or eight and we missed open goals practically, but the lads did a great job. (Tom) Murphy, Chris (Kinnear) and Craig (Braham-Barrett) came in and did great, whilst (Jamie) Grimes is back fit now. We may be getting injuries, but the players coming in are so much part of the squad and nobody is letting anyone down as they don’t want to.”

Though the front two will claim the headlines, Kinnear praised all areas of the team: “Defensively, we were strong as they were a handful physically up front. In the midfield we won knock-downs because it was not a game we could play and we just had to try to keep getting it forward. It was just one of those games where we had just got to dig in and tonight we did everything right.”

Kinnear’s men have risen to fourth in the table, but manager Chris has urged caution as the play off race hots up: “There’s 10 games to go and 30 points to play for. Lincoln are a decent side and they came here to attack us. It’s more difficult when sides sit back, but that’s part and parcel of it when you are doing well and we have got to find solutions. The spirit is very high, but we must not get carried away.”

Dover face a trip to Guiseley this Saturday, a side they recently beat 3-0 in the FA Trophy. Kinnear said: “They will be looking for revenge and have a bit of pride. They also need to get a few points to stay up and it is not always easy against sides down there. The pitch is not great there, but if we want to be successful then that is what we have to overcome.”

“Fortunately no-one extra got injured and Ricky Modeste should be back, but all the lads have faith in whoever is playing’.

PREVIEW: WHITES VS LINCOLN

*IS**BS*Dover Athletic vs Lincoln City – Vanarama National League
Tuesday 15th March 2016 – 7.45pm kick-off
Referee: Richard Martin*BF**IF*

*BS*HEADLINES*BF*
A good display at Crabble on Saturday saw Whites pick up a point in a 0-0 draw against Tranmere Rovers – a point that, given the number of games each side has remaining, was worth more to Dover than their newly-relegated opponents.

It was the hosts who controlled the play and came closest to scoring, with Sean Raggett’s header hitting the crossbar late in the second half, and Mitch Walker kept comparatively quiet in the home goal.

That draw saw Whites drop a side to seventh, but actually end up closer to the playoffs than at the start of the day – it’s now a gap of two points, compared to three prior to kick-off.

Tuesday evening sees Lincoln City come to Crabble to try and pick up three points for their own playoff charge. A good run of form has seen The Imps win four of their last six matches in the Vanarama National League, but they will need to continue this momentum to have any chance of securing a top-five finish come the end of April. The sides met at Sincil Bank in January, with a brace from Ricky Miller and a Nicky Deverdics penalty earning an impressive 3-2 victory.

A win for Dover could see them finish the evening in 4th place, whilst three points for the visitors could see them edge ever close to the playoff spots.

With games rapidly running out, it’s time for both sides to show their true colours..

Lincoln City have played in the Conference Premier since the season 2011–12. Following relegation, Tilson released all but three members of the squad, telling them they had no future at Sincil Bank. By early October, Lincoln were one point above relegation zone and the management were coming under-fire after a run of one win in four; Tilson was sacked as manager on the 10 October 2011 following a 4–0 defeat at Tamworth. Following the duo’s sacking, Grant Brown was put in temporary charge.

Brown remained in charge for four games, winning the first but none of the subsequent three, before former Mansfield Town manager David Holdsworth was confirmed as manager. Holdsworth managed the Imps to safety but only by 8 points; furthermore, Lincoln lost to Isthmian League outfit Carshalton Athletic in the FA Trophy and suffered an earliest FA Cup exit since 1924–25.

Lincoln were one game away from facing Liverpool in the FA Cup third round the following season, but were denied by a second round replay defeat to Mansfield Town. On 17 February 2013, David Holdsworth left the club by mutual consent following twelve games without a win. On 27 February 2013, Gary Simpson, a former assistant of Keith Alexander during his time at the club, was appointed manager until the end of the season. Safety was secured on the final day with a 5-1 away win against Hyde.

After a good start to the 2013-14 season, Lincoln went on a run of just two wins in seventeen games saw the Imps embroiled in relegation trouble once more. From the start of February to the end of the season, Lincoln lost just three games, and finished 14th in the league, their best placing since relegation. Gary Simpson was placed on gardening leave on 3 November 2014. Assistant manager Chris Moyses was placed in temporary charge and then appointed permanently on 8 December 2014. Lincoln finished 15th that season.

*BS*RECENT FORM*BF*
Coming into the game, Whites have a record of three wins, one draw and two defeats in their last six Vanarama National League matches. Wins were picked up against Gateshead (4-0), Woking (1-0) and Welling United (2-1), with Saturday’s draw against Tranmere Rovers (0-0) and defeats suffered against Cheltenham Town (1-2) and Southport (1-2).

Lincoln’s record over the same number of matches shows four wins and two draws. Their victories came against Guiseley (1-0), Eastleigh (3-0), Southport (3-1) and Aldershot Town (2-0), with draws against Altrincham (3-3) and Macclesfield Town (1-1).

Vanarama National League – Lincoln City 2-3 Dover Athletic
Hotshot Ricky Miller scored twice as Whites came from behind on two occasions to beat Lincoln City 3-2 in an entertaining clash at Sincil Bank.

The hosts had taken the lead in the first half, but Miller’s first shortly before the interval sent the sides into the break on even terms.

City took the lead shortly after the break, before a penalty from Nicky Deverdics and an excellent solo effort from Miller sealed an excellent comeback for Chris Kinnear’s men.

Lincoln threw everything at Whites in the closing stages, but a resolute Dover defence saw little threat created by an increasingly desperate Imps attack. In fact, it was Miller who had the best chance of the remaining minutes, with Miller once again the protagonist – only a good reaction stop from Farman saw his hat-trick denied.

Full credit goes to Dover for their character and continued determination, with their never-say-die attitude yielding three points once again.*IF*

*BS*TEAM NEWS*BF*
Whites were boosted by the return of Jamie Grimes to action on Saturday, with the defender having now recovered from injury. Tyrone Sterling, Liam Bellamy and Aswad Thomas remain doubtful for Whites, meaning that Craig Braham-Barrett – signed last week – is likely to be given the nod at left wing-back, after an impressive debut against Tranmere Rovers at the weekend.

Dover are likely to name an unchanged starting line-up for Tuesday’s game, with Jack Parkinson likely to continue at centre-back following his man-of-the-match display on Saturday.

*BS*TOP SCORERS*BF*
Lincoln’s top scorer in the league this season is Matt Rhead, who has the found the back of the net nineteen times.

Whites’ top scorer in the league is Ricky Miller with fifteen goals, two ahead of Stefan Payne and three more than Nicky Deverdics.

GRAND DAY PLANNED AT CRABBLE

STAND AND DELIVER

OUR new ¶œ1,325,000 Family Stand will take centre stage at Crabble on Saturday, November 19.

It will officially be opened ahead of the National League clash with Guiseley.

The celebration will feature as part of the Family and Diversity Day ƒ?? and there will be so much on offer when the gates open at 12 noon.

The modern design includes 500 seats and will provide the club with Football League standard dressing rooms, refereeƒ??s changing rooms and medical room, as well as a new location for the control room where our matchday safety operations will be run out of.

There will also be extra toilet facilities and dedicated viewing areas for disabled supporters.

The impressive construction features Glulam, which was made in sections and brought over from Bosnia, before being assembled on site while the seating is from Scandanavia.

It was built with grants covering around ¶œ400,000 of the cost while the balance came from chairman Jim Parmenter and sponsorship.

The chairman said: ƒ??We are investing into developing and improving Crabble to meet the updated Football League criteria, and also to provide a better matchday experience for our supporters ƒ?? including those with disabilities.

ƒ??We hope that supporters enjoy the new facilities and what else we have got planned on the day.ƒ?

To add to the celebrations, there will be FREE hot dogs for kids (limits apply), FREE goodie bags and plenty of pre-match entertainment, including the Vista Twisters Cheerleading Team.

More details about whatƒ??s planned will be revealed as the big day approaches!

The club has also given tickets to all 52 Dover district schools to allow students to attend the day and savour the Crabble experience.

The day also represents the launch of our ONE TOWN, ONE TEAM, ONE DOVER campaign.

YOU CAN HELP US ADVERTISE THIS EVENT BY DISPLAYING A POSTER, WHICH IS AVAILABLE *Link1*

FA CUP TICKETS

HOME,SWEET HOME

DOVER midfielder Jim Stevenson has extra reason to be pleased with Saturdayƒ??s FA Cup first round clash at Cambridge United.

You see Dover’s summer signing lives in Cambridge!

ƒ??The locals were telling me it could happen,ƒ? he laughed.

ƒ??But depending on where we meet pre match I might need to drive away to come back!

The former Aldershot man believes Whites have every chance of dumping their League Two counterparts out of the competition and securing a place in the hat for the second round draw.

ƒ??There is only about ten places between the two and over the years the FA cup has proved non league teams can beat the full times ones. Hopefully we will go there full of confidence on the back of some good wins.ƒ?

The Cup is yet to wave itƒ??s magic wand over Stevenson, but he holds hope for a dream third round tie against his boyhood team.

ƒ??I was born in Harrogate, so I am a Leeds fan. Elland Road away would be the one I would want and it would be great for my Dad too.ƒ?

He added: ƒ??Ironically the last time I played against Cambridge in the cup for Luton we lost, so I am personally looking to put that right, especially as I will have a lot of family and friends at the game.ƒ?

Stevenson has played every minute of Doverƒ??s league and cup campaign so far this season, but believes he has more to offer.

He said: ƒ??I have only shown my best in little glimpses and in the forward areas, such as creating and scoring goals, there is more to come.ƒ?

Admitting to being only ‘satisfied’ with his performances, Stevenson’s desire to improve clearly fits the type of character manager Chris Kinnear wants in the squad.

ƒ??I am always looking to do better,ƒ? Stevenson said.

ƒ??If I get 10 goals over the season, I’ll be wondering what I can do to get to fifteen the next.ƒ?

DAFC REVIEW: FEBRUARY

DAFC REVIEW: FEBRUARY

*BS*February featured four fixtures for the Whites, including three FA Trophy matches and one league game. Despite having three games called off for a variety of reasons, Dover managed to score ten goals, winning two games and drawing one.*BF*

*BS*Dover Athletic 2-2 Guiseley – FA Trophy (Round of 16) – Saturday 6th February*BF*
Dover were drawn against Guiseley in the round of 16, hoping to take one step closer to Wembley in the FA Trophy competition.

It turned out to be a tough match for the Whites, taking both sides 20-25 minutes to get started. Both sides were threatening and Parkinson coming closest with his effort being cleared off the Guiseley goal line. Despite this initial encouragement from Dover, Guiseley’s Hatfield fired into the corner of the net in the 36th minute to give the away side the lead. Dover’s opposition almost made it 2-0 minutes later however the shot went just wide of the mark.

The Whites came out in the second half determined to put in a better performance and were almost instantly rewarded when Deverdics’ free kick smacked the cross bar. The Guiseley goal was finally breached in the 60th minute, thanks to a Jack Parkinson goal from close range, following a corner kick.

Dover worked hard and went looking for another, however it would be the away side who would regain their lead, after Dover goalkeeper Andy Rafferty appeared to be fouled in the area, but with no free kick given, Rothery slotted home. It would take a last minute goal from substitute Ofori-Acheampong to level the scores and set up a replay 10 days later in Yorkshire.

*BS*Dover Athletic 4-0 Gateshead – Vanarama National League – Saturday 13th February*BF*
Taking a brief break from the FA Trophy, Dover returned to league action, hosting play-off rivals Gateshead at Crabble. Dover were one point ahead of the Tynesiders and were looking to make up ground, having missed several league fixtures due to called off fixtures and postponements due to the FA Trophy campaign.

Mitch Walker came into the side, his first appearance since November 7th against Stourbridge. While the away side were dominating the play for the first 20 minutes, Ricky Miller would be the first player to score against Gateshead for more than five matches. Miller bagged a 20 minute brace, scoring from an acute angle in the 24th minute and again just before half time.

In between Miller’s goals, Deverdics coolly placed a shot into the corner of the net, having exchanged a clever one-two with Ricky Miller, both it seemed having a profound effect on the proceedings.

Dover remained rampant for the entire game and despite the Gateshead goalkeeper saving excellently from Miller for his hat-trick, Payne headed the rebound into the net. Dover showed their intent to return to the play-off places and did so in fantastic fashion.

*BS*Guiseley 0-3 Dover Athletic – FA Trophy (Round of 16 replay) – Tuesday 16th February*BF*
Dover had saved the tie in the dying minutes at Crabble and travelled up to Guiseley to decide the tie and progress to the final stages of the competition.

Due to a flooded pitch, this was the first game in more than two months, and the Whites were determined to not make it a happy return for the Yorkshire side.

On the stroke of the 23rd minute, Guiseley became a man short, having lost Hatfield to a red card for a tackle on Modeste. Just seconds later, Payne raced onto a sublime pass from Deverdics to open the scoring for the Whites. It would be an uphill battle for the home side, being a goal and a man down in the opening half hour. Dover were eager for more and forced the opposition goalkeeper into making a string of fantastic saves to keep his side in the game.

Despite an impressive attacking display from Dover, the Whites wouldn’t score again until the 78th minute, this time Deverdics again scoring to make the game all but settled. Payne added the icing on top with his second and Dover’s third in the last minute of the game, beating the oncoming Guiseley goalkeeper and walking the ball into the net. This victory would set up an away fixture against Nantwich Town in the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy.

*BS*Nantwich Town FC 2-1 Dover Athletic– FA Trophy – Saturday 27th February*BF*
Dover went into this fixture wary of the threat that the home side could pose, having lost previously to Stourbridge- in the same league as Nantwich- earlier on in the season and against Bath City in the same stage the season previous. A victory here would set up a two-legged semi-final and a genuinely great chance of playing at Wembley Stadium, a fantastic accolade to possess.

A goalless half was one to forget for both sides, with the game coming to life in the 55th minute, when Nantwich counter-attacked following a Dover corner and slotted past Walker into Dover’s net. The home side were very much up for this fixture and did not relent in their ambition to attack, despite going 1-0 up.

Richard Orlu managed to score for the Whites to level things up, after Deverdics fired in a cross from a free-kick, and it appeared that a replay might be on the cards. However, Nantwich’s Shotton had other ideas and scored the winner for the home side in the 93rd minutes, much to the heartache of the travelling fans and players. Dover bow out of the FA Trophy having scored 11 goals in 5 games in the competition, and although saddened to have been eliminated, the club can now focus 100% on the upcoming end to the season.

A very busy month lies ahead with a play-off place up for grabs and games in hand over all of their play-off rivals; March will be the defining month for the Whites’ play-off chasing efforts, so come and support the boys in their fantastic push for promotion!
