SHANE'S OUR NEW DIAMOND

*BS*SHANE HUKE has this afternoon agreed a one-year deal to join Dover Athletic from Blue Square Premier club Rushden and Diamonds.

*BF*The former Peterborough and Dagenham star is an experienced midfielder who lives in Sidcup and revealed he had no hesitation in dropping into Blue Square South to join Martin Hayes’ ambitious project for next season.

Huke, 25, said: “Martin called me a couple of weeks ago and we met. He outlined all his ambitions for the new season and it really excited me. I wanted to join a big club and Dover fit the bill for me.

“I’ve decided to drop out of full-time football now. My dream of becoming a Premier League footballer is not going to realistically happen now so I need to settle down and plan for life after football.

“So going part-time but still being part of something big is an ideal scenario for me. I’m getting married in a year and planning on having kids, so it’s really time to put down proper roots – and this is the first part of that, joining Dover Athletic.

“I’m even starting a new job soon as a financial adviser in London in a few weeks time. I’ve just got to sit a few exams.”

Shane had a good look around Crabble this afternoon and was impressed.

*Lpic1*He added: “It’s a great little set-up here. The pitch is in perfect condition – that surprised me, considering it’s the end of the season.

“The FA Cup put Dover Athletic on the map and I knew all about the win at Gillingham. I can’t wait for pre-season to start.”

And in a message to the Dover fans, Shane said: “I will put in 100 per cent all the time. Even when I am not having a great game, and below-par which happens to everyone, I will still run around and put my head in. I won’t go missing.”

ARSENAL AT DOVER - THURS AUG 4

*BS*ARSENE WENGER is sending down a team of young Arsenal stars to take on Dover Athletic on August 3.

*BF*Wenger has a wealth of talented young footballers at the Emirates and whatever side he decides to send down to Crabble will be worth watching.

Former manager Andy Hessenthaler will also be bringing his Gillingham side down for a friendly on July 19, no doubt hoping to restore Kent bragging rights after our 2-0 win at Priestfield in the FA Cup.

The players return for pre-season training on July and four friendlies – all at home so far – have been organised so far and they are as follows:

July 12 Hastings
July 19 Gillingham
July 30 Ostend
Aug 4 Arsenal XI

One player who will definitely be reporting back for training is goalkeeper Lee Hook, who has signed a new one-year deal and taken a sizeable pay-cut to stay. Boss Martin Hayes praised Hook for his attitude and application since he became manager.

He said: “Lee wants to stay here and took a sizeable wage cut too. He wants to challenge Ross for that No1 position and is keen to be part of what we want to build here.

“His attitude since I arrived at the club has been first-class. He has never moaned, just got on with training, working hard and showing me he wants to be a Dover player.

“We need two decent keepers and now have that.”

Sam Cutler, Harry Baker, Donovan Simmonds and Barry Cogan have also signed new contracts.

But Hayes warned that the club will only wait so long for other players to sign new deals.

He said: “Some players want to negotiate their wages but we are trying to stay realistic here. Most people around the country are suffering job losses and pay-cuts, or pay-freezes.

“We don’t want to overspend money in what are tough times for football too. I need to make sure we have a squad of players who want to be here – and not just for the money.

“The lads here at Dover get very well looked after and paid on time. That’s not always the case elsewhere.”

Hayes is talking to “two or three” regular Blue Square Premier players about joining Dover.

He said: “We’re selling to players our project. We want to challenge for the title and get promoted into the Premier. We are ambitious and want players who are like-minded.”
