MATCH PREVIEW: SOUTHEND VS DOVER

Dover continue to search for their first win of the season as they travel to Southend this evening.

Despite coming from behind twice, three goals in the last 25 minutes against Stockport on Saturday sealed another defeat in what has been a disappointing season for Andy Hessenthaler’s men.

Likewise, this evening’s hosts are also struggling to get wins on the board this season, having picked up two in their first 12 games. This form led to the sacking of manager Phil Brown at the beginning of October, with Kevin Maher coming into replace him and ex-Barnet manager Darren Currie coming in as his number two.

Last time out, the National League newcomers suffered their 8th defeat of the season as a late Tyrone Marsh goal meant they were defeated away from home by Boreham Wood.

SOUTHEND’S PLAYER TO WATCH

Rhys Murphy knows how to score in this division, having done it consistently for Yeovil Town over the last few years. He is also top scorer for The Shrimpers with three goals this campaign.

LAST TIME WE MET

The last time we played this evening’s host was in the FA Cup in 2019.

On that day Hessenthaler’s men came out on top against a side who were struggling in League One at the time.

With seven minutes left of the game, Ruel Sotiriou scored the only goal of the game shortly after coming onto the pitch.

The Orient loanee made a name for himself live on BT Sport by latching onto a long ball and firing past the goalkeeper to send Whites’ into the Second Round.

VIDEO: MANAGER REACTION

Manager Andy Hessenthaler speaks to BBC Radio Kent‘s Matt Gerrard after the National League defeat against Stockport County Football Club at Crabble.

MATCH REPORT: DOVER 2-5 STOCKPORT COUNTY

By Alex Hoad

Koby Arthur’s stunning volley could not prevent Dover slipping to another Vanarama National League defeat at home to Stockport County on Saturday.

Whites produced perhaps their best performance of the season to battle back to go into the final half-hour level at 2-2 thanks to Arthur’s strike and Ben Wiliamson’s first goal for the club from the spot, however, the superior fitness and class of the hugely ambitious visitors proved decisive in the end as they ran-out 5-2 winners.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler handed starts to Reda Johnson and Yannis Drais and Dover made a bright start, though the early chances fell to the visitors as Ollie Crankshaw fizzed a shot past the angle of Adam Parkes’ post and bar after just four minutes and the on-loan Watford keeper held a low shot from Paddy Madden seven minutes later.

At the other end, some good hold-up play from Aaron Cosgrave saw him tee-up Arthur soon after, only for the Whites livewire to see his shot deflected just over the bar.

Ryan Hanson tried his luck with a low strike from 20 yards on 20 minutes but Scott Quigley broke the deadlock at the other end three minutes later when he collected a pull-back, cut inside, and fired in a shot that took a huge deflection and looped into the net past the helpless Parkes.

Dover rallied and were level just after the half-hour when Hanson’s quick feet saw him fouled in the box by Ethan Pye, allowing Williamson the chance to send Ethan Ross the wrong way and slot home his first Whites goal from the spot.

Dover continued to press and Danny Collinge saw a powerful goalbound header blocked on the line – possibly by teammate Johnson – as the hosts pushed for a second but three minutes before the break they were unable to clear a John Rooney corner allowing Madden to sweep home at the far post.

A thunderous 25-yard strike by ex-Bolton Wanderers captain Antoni Sarcevic came back off the underside of the bar in added time, with Quigley’s follow-up effort ruled-out for offside.

After the turnaround it took just five minutes for Dover to draw level as the impressive Arthur showcased superb technique to lash a dropping ball into the top corner on the volley from the edge of the box past the stunned Ross.

Rooney – brother of former England star Wayne -showed superb vision to beat the backpedaling Parkes with a 45-yard lob soon after but saw his audacious effort thud into the crossbar.

The pivotal moment arrived when sub Travis Gregory was denied by Ross at the far post with Williamson unable to turn in the rebound. Moments later Dover hearts were broken at the other end as the defence parted allowing Crankshaw to slot in the loose ball after a Parkes parry on 67 minutes.

The wind left Dover’s sails and the full-time visitors’ superior fitness proved telling in the final 20 minutes. Parkes had already denied Quigley and Rooney when defender Liam Hogan rose to nod home a far-post corner to make it 4-2 on 76 minutes.

Parkes patted down another rasping Quigley drive before he and Madden helped tee-up sub Ben Whitfield to tap in a stoppage-time fifth.

The defeat leaves Dover 17 points from safety with a game in hand and 32 fixtures remaining.

County, who were led by interim boss Dave Conlon after the midweek sacking of Simon Rusk, moved up to ninth, four points below the play-off places.

MATCH PREVIEW: DOVER VS STOCKPORT

After two weeks of FA Cup action, Andy Hessenthaler’s side turns their attention back to the National League where a win is very much needed in their fight for survival.

Whites were knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle on Tuesday night as they fell to a single goal defeat against Yate Town in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round Replay.

Meanwhile, our visitors lost 2-1 at home on Tuesday against Barnet, a result which saw manager Simon Rusk sacked the following morning..

The Hatters are currently 10th in the National League, five points off the play-off places.

STOCKPORT’S PLAYER TO WATCH

John Rooney knows the National League very well having scored consistently in this league for a number of years. He has got three goals already this season and will be looking to add to his tally at Crabble.

LAST TIME WE MET

In our only meeting against Stockport last season, three second half goals meant Whites were defeated at Edgeley Park.

John Rooney opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the home side, before the lead was doubled 10 minutes later through Alex Reid.

Rooney got his second of the game with a minute to go as Dover were comprehensively beaten.

ARTHUR UP FOR THE FIGHT

Koby Arthur admits he might not have got the opportunity to play for Dover Athletic had it not been for a kind gesture in June.

The former Birmingham City midfielder saw the details for our Invitational-only trial at the Abbey School in Faversham, but only after the deadline for applications had passed.

The 25-year-old thought his chance had gone but still emailed his CV into trial organiser Richard Harvey.

And our resident Aussie Kit Manager, among other job titles, wasn’t about to disappoint the talented Ghanaian pocket-rocket as Arthur explains.

He said: “I only contacted Richard the day before the trial, but he still took the time to contact me and gave me that chance to come down.

“Football is a cruel game at times, especially when you are looking to get back into it after a couple of tough years, and sometimes you just need that one bit of good fortune.

“Richard could have so easily said no because I had missed the deadline, but he didn’t, and I am really indebted to him for giving me the chance to come along.”

Arthur impressed the management team in the trial game and was duly invited back in for pre-season.

However, there was another twist in the tale for Arthur, who made 16 appearances in all competitions for Birmingham, including 12 in the Championship after making his debut against Wolves in April 2013.

After just a couple of sessions with Andy Hessenthaler’s squad, Arthur had to return home to Birmingham after his young son was taken ill.

He stayed by his side until heading back south on the day of the Watford pre-season friendly.

He played in that game and backed up that impressive performance less than 24 hours later, scoring our first goal after just 17 seconds in the 4-0 win at Tonbridge Angels.

Hess had seen enough, and Arthur agreed terms in August.

While our number 22, who was a member of Macclesfield Town’s National League winning team in the 2017/2018 season, is delighted to be at Crabble, he’s not here to go through the motions.

He said: “I been given this opportunity and I am making sacrifices to take it.

“I stay with family in London during the week before heading back home to Birmingham to see my partner and son.

“It’s hard, but, hey, it’s what you’ve got to do – I do it because Dover gave me the chance.

“You can be sure that I’m ready to work and work really hard for the team in each and every game I play.

“I can imagine what the fans are going through right now given how the season has started for the club, but I am not about to give up and neither should the fans.

“We’ve got to keep fighting – we’ve got to keep the faith.”

NO CUP JOY FOR WHITES

Yate Town substitute James Harding’s second-half goal ended Dover’s FA Cup campaign in the fourth qualifying round replay after a 1-0 defeat at Lodge Road on Tuesday.

The Southern League Premier Division South side will now host Yeovil Town in the first round proper.

The only goal of the game came in the 75th minute when goalkeeper Adam Parkes could only parry Jamie Adams’ driven cross into the path of the unmarked Harding, who scored from close range.

In a game of few chances, Dover created some periods of sustained pressure but was unable to make it count in both halves in Gloucestershire.

Millwall loanee Junior Tiensia went closest to giving Andy Hessenthaler’s side the lead in the first half when his shot bounced off the bar.

Home keeper Andy Hannah also saved well from Travis Gregory, Koby Arthur, Ryan Hanson, and Tiensia.

Yate also received £9,375 in prize money for reaching the first round proper.

MATCH PREVIEW: YATE TOWN VS DOVER

Dover make the long trip to Gloucestershire for the second time in a week this evening as they face Yate Town in the rescheduled FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round replay.

Last Tuesday’s encounter at Lodge Road was postponed an hour after the scheduled kick off time due to a floodlight failure.

This replay came about after Andy Hessenthaler’s men came from behind to earn a draw against The Bluebells at Crabble.

Whites went behind early on at Crabble through Olly Mehew, before Ricky Miller equalised with his first competitive goal of the season midway through the second half.

Reda Johnson was sent off with 10 minutes to go in the tie and will miss tonight’s replay.

The winners of this tie will welcome Yeovil Town in the First Round proper, after they knocked out Weymouth on penalties in their own replay last Tuesday, with ties commencing on the weekend of 6th November.

Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Keith’s family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.

RIP Keith.
