Season: 2018-2019

Dover Athletic v Chesterfield

WHITES moved nine points clear of the drop zone following a goalless draw at Crabble on Saturday.

In a game of few chances, Athletic held on to extend their unbeaten run in the National League to five matches.

Inih Effiong jinked through the visiting defence early on, however, both he and teammate Alfie Pavey both tried to shoot at the same time and the ball rolled harmlessly through as a result of the mix-up.

Chesterfield, with seven changes from their 2-0 win against Dagenham & Redbridge last weekend, forced the first shot on target with home stopper turning away Jack McKay’s stinging volley.

Bobby-Joe Taylor’s swirling free-kick had Joe Anyon scrambling, but the ball flew over the visiting goalie’s far post.

Jai Reason’s long ball set Alfie Pavey clear, but Spireites skipper Will Evans recovered in time to make a last-ditch challenge.

Stuart Lewis then sent a 25-yard effort into the side netting for Athletic.

Worgan then dived low to grab onto Marc-Antoine Fortune’s low drive following a one-two with Charlie Carter on the edge of the area and at the other end, Mitch Brundle sent a piledriver just over.

Lewis sent another shot from distance over after Taylor’s free-kick struck the Chesterfield wall and Fortune scuffed well wide from a right angle after Lee Shaw had played in the ball from out wide.

Dover’s best chance came midway through the second half.

Kevin Lokko headed Reason’s pinpoint delivery goalwards, only for the ball to cannon off both Pavey and Bedsente Gomis and away after both players tried to head on target.

Andrew Kiwomya blazed over from a few yards after Worgan’s parry from Fortune fell kindly for the substitute.

Kiwomya saw his shot strike Lokko and though Lawrence Maguire sent the rebound goalwards with venom from the edge of the box, Lokko bravely blocked the ball with his body to keep Dover’s clean sheet intact.

Earlier, boss Andy Hessenthaler made one change to the side that started at Solihull last week, with Effiong replacing the injured Jamie Allen.

Whites are in National League action again next weekend when they travel to Barrow on Saturday 13th April, kick-off 3 pm.

Solihull Moors v Dover Athletic

AN INJURY-TIME leveller from Tyrone Williams saw Athletic denied a third straight win in the National League at 10-man Solihull Moors.

The right-back bundled in late on to cancel out Scott Doe’s volley just before the break.  Alfie Pavey had tapped Dover into an early lead, with Danny Wright equalising for the hosts.

Wright nearly handed the hosts the ideal start, curling just off target within a minute of the kickoff.

Instead, it was the visitors who made the early breakthrough thanks to their in-form striker.

Bobby-Joe Taylor sent in a low cross which the Solihull defence were unable to clear, leaving Alfie Pavey the simplest of finishes for his fifth goal in six matches for Athletic.

Nathan Blissett almost latched onto Taylor’s misplaced pass, but Doe was on hand to clear the danger.

Wright then went down in the area, only for the referee to wave away the forward’s claims for a spot kick.

Darren Carter had sight of goal from the edge of the D but fired straight at visiting stopper Lee Worgan.

Athletic’s keeper then had to be at his agile best to deny Wright.

The target man headed a corner goalwards, only for Worgan to pull off a flying save to divert the ball over the bar.

Former Cheltenham striker Wright was not to be denied when his next chance arrived on 38 minutes.

Worgan could only parry Jamey Osborne’s fierce 20-yard drive as far as wright, who stabbed in the equaliser.

Dover’s keeper was insistent Moors’ scorer was in an offside position as he put the ball in the net, but his pleas to the linesman were in vain as the goal stood.

However, the visitors were ahead once again six minutes later.

Ryan Boot could only punch Taylor’s swirling set-piece as far as the lurking Scott Doe and the defender made no mistake with a volley that flew past the home goalie and into the back of the net.

Tim Flowers’ side found themselves a man light five minutes after the interval when Liam Daly was shown two yellow cards in quick succession, the second for an elbow on Pavey during an aerial challenge.

But the 10-men nearly restored parity when Jermaine Hylton fired wide of the mark from Jamie Reckord’s ball into the area.

And Whites nearly extended their lead after some calamitous goalkeeping from Boot.

The stopper miscontrolled Williams’ backpass and had the scramble the ball off the goal line with his feet.

Hylton tried again from distance, only for Worgan to get his body behind the ball.

There was then a heart-in-mouth moment for Dover’s stopper after spilling Osborne’s low shot, however, a foul was given against Hylton for his challenge on Worgan when trying to pounce on the rebound.

Substitute Anthony Jeffrey went close, blasting inches past the far post from fellow sub Ricky Modeste’s pass.

Hylton, Blissett and sub Adi Yussuf all had efforts, but none were able to trouble Worgan as the clock ticked towards full time.

And Moors were rewarded for their pressure as Williams tucked the ball between Worgan’s legs three minutes into injury time to ensure the points were shared, although Yussuf also claimed he got the final touch before the ball crossed the line.

The draw sees Dover drop one place to 20th on the league ladder, however Havant & Waterlooville’s draw at Sutton United means the Kent side remain eight points clear of the bottom four.

Earlier, boss Hessenthaler named the same side that started at Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night.  Ricky Modeste replaced Kadell Daniel on the bench.

Whites next host Chesterfield on Saturday 6th April in the National League, kick-off 3 pm

v

Dagenham & Redbridge v Dover Athletic

DOVER ended their miserable record at Dagenham with an impressive 3-1 win on Tuesday night.

An audacious backheel from Alfie Pavey five minutes after the restart added to first-half goals from Jamie Allen and Bedsente Gomis.

The hosts pulled a goal back through sub Will Wright with 20 minutes to play, but Athletic held on to move eight points clear of the National League Relegation zone.

Earlier, after evading a Dagenham challenge, Josh Passley sent in a dangerous cross that bounced off Ben Nunn towards Pavey, but Dover’s striker was unable to get a shot away.

Connor Wilkinson found the angle to acute as he sprinted onto Angelo Balanta’s through ball and smashed the ball behind the goal.

The first shot on target came from Pavey, who volleyed Mitch Brundle’s chest down goalwards, only to see home keeper Elliott Justham push the ball behind for a corner.

Visiting stopper Lee Worgan was called into action moments later, blocking Balanta from point blank after Liam Gordon had passed the ball into the area.

That save proved crucial as the away side went ahead on 21 minutes.

Stuart Lewis passed to Allen, who took a touch away from his marker and buried his shot in the bottom corner for his sixth National League strike of the campaign.

And Dover boss Andy Hessenthaler would have been even happier seven minutes later as his side doubled their lead.

Bobby-Joe Taylor sent in a perfect delivery for Gomis to loop a header over Justham and into the top corner.

Visiting fans were in dreamland when Whites scored their third goal without reply five minutes after the restart as Pavey grabbed his fourth league goal in five games.

With his back to goal, Pavey collected Kevin Lokko’s knockdown and nonchalantly back-heeled the ball into the bottom corner past a stunned Justham.

Jack Munns let fly from distance as Peter Taylor’s side tried to reduce the deficit, narrowly clearing Worgan’s crossbar.

Daggers did pull a goal back on 69 minutes when Wright volleyed past Worgan.

The replacement continued to cause the visitors problems, this time sending a thunderous effort goalwards and forcing Worgan to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Home fans were soon celebrating, but not for long.

Sub Chike Kandi, introduced at the break for Wilkinson,  had the goal at his mercy as he met Balanta’s cross into the area, but directed his header into the grateful hands of Worgan as Dover’s goalie held the ball on the goalline.

Nunn then went through on goal, but his cross-cum-shot was out of reach of that outstretched Munns sliding in.

Sub Inih Effiong sprinted through to seal the win, but Justham managed to get a fingertip on the ball to stop the forward finding his first goal of 2019.

Boss Hessenthaler made two changes to the side that started in their last game at Halifax.  Josh Passley and Scott Doe came in for Danny McNamara, who returned to his parent club Millwall following his loan spell at Crabble, and Anthony Jeffrey, who started as a substitute.

Whites next travel to Solihull Moors in the National League on Saturday 30th March, kick-off 3 pm.

Dover Athletic v FC Halifax Town

A GOAL in each half eased Dover’s relegation fears as Andy Hessenthaler’s men won in windy conditions at Crabble on Saturday.

Alfie Pavey’s close-range finish and a goal direct from Anthony Jeffrey’s cross had Whites in control just after the hour mark.

Matty Kosylo headed home to set up a nervy last 25 minutes for the hosts, however Athletic held on to move five points clear of the National League drop zone.

Town’s Nathan Clarke took an early shot on from a corner but volleyed narrowly over.

Dover went for goal twice in quick succession, with long-range efforts from Bedsente Gomis and Jeffrey going straight at visiting keeper Sam Johnson.

Town’s stopper then beat away Mitch Brundle’s fiercely struck free-kick and then grabbed onto Stuart Lewis’ follow-up volley from the edge of the box.

Home keeper Lee Worgan dived low to tip away Devante Rodney’s bottom-corner bound drive and Jeffrey was off target at the other end with a curling effort over the crossbar.

Pavey, in search of his third National League goal of the season for Athletic, saw Johnson pat down a 30-yard strike.

And the striker made no mistake with his next chance on 25 minutes.

Jai Reason weaved past two defenders and laid the ball off for Pavey to fire past Johnson from inside the penalty area.

The Halifax defence were clearly aggrieved by the opener, but their claims of handball against Reason were waved away by the referee.

The midfielder then nearly turned goalscorer, sending a scorching volley just wide before the break.

Hessenthaler’s team were nearly made to pay for missing their chances 10 minutes after the restart.

Danny McNamara’s stumble allowed Kosylo to break clear, however, Worgan blocked the winger’s shot with his legs.

Pavey poked wide after Bobby-Joe Taylor’s free-kick struck the wall, but Athletic had the lead in fortuitous circumstances on 61 minutes.

Taylor surged forward and passed to Jeffrey to whip in a cross which passed a stunned Johnson and into the bottom corner.

However, the points were not safe as The Shaymen pulled a goal back three minutes later through dangerman Kosylo.

A long kick by goalkeeper Johnson made it’s way all the way up to Dover’s penalty area for Kosylo to head over the onrushing Worgan and into the net.

Kevin Lokko almost restored the two-goal advantage, heading over Taylor’s corner.

Cameron King robbed McNamara and set Manny Duku clear, only for the substitute to slip at the crucial moment and send the ball wide of the mark.

There were cries of disbelief from the home crowd when the fourth official showed six minutes of injury time on the board, but Whites held on to extend their unbeaten home run to three matches.

Earlier, boss Hessenthaler kept with the same side that drew 1-1 with Boreham Wood at Crabble on Tuesday night.

Whites next travel to Dagenham & Redbridge in the National League on Tuesday 26th March, kick-off 7:45 pm.

Dover Athletic v Boreham Wood

MITCH Brundle’s first-half goal ensured the points were shared at Crabble on Tuesday night.

The defender headed in Bobby-Joe Taylor’s free-kick to cancel out Justin Shaibu’s opener for a Boreham Wood side wearing Dover’s away strip from the Skrill South 2013/2014 promotion-winning campaign after their kit man arrived late due to heavy traffic.

It was the visitors who went ahead on four minutes via top scorer Shaibu.

The Brentford loanee latched onto debutant Charlie Cooper’s through ball and slammed the ball into the far corner past home stopper Lee Worgan.

Dover’s misery did not last long and the Kent side were level just six minutes later thanks to Mitch Brundle’s seventh goal of the season.

The skipper rose highest to head in Bobby-Joe Taylor free-kick to restore parity.

Anthony Jeffrey almost had Dover ahead five minutes before the break, forcing visiting keeper Ryan Huddart to tip his low drive wide of the post.

Jai Reason was next to try from the edge of the box but scuffed off target from Jamie Allen’s pass.

It was almost 2-1 to the hosts just moments later when Alfie Pavey, searching for his third goal in as many starts, headed Danny McNamara’s accurate centre narrowly wide.

Following the restart, Allen was unable to connect with Pavey’s driven pass across the goal line and Kevin Lokko stabbed wide after Taylor’s set-piece fell kindly for the centre back.

Jamal Fyfield was left looking to the skies with Wood’s next chance.

The defender slammed the ball goalwards, only to see Worgan fling himself to turn the ball over in spectacular fashion.

A lightning Dover counter-attack ended with Huddart saving Allen’s curling effort and later on Pavey mistimed his volley after Reason found the forward in space.

Keiran Murtagh almost stunned the home crowd as he fired a long-range strike into Worgan’s mid-rift.

Substitute Inih Effiong nearly scored a stunning late winner but smashed well over after a sprint towards the box.

Luke Garrard’s men almost stole the win in injury time when Murtagh’s looping header struck the crossbar and bounced over for a goal kick.

Earlier, boss Hessenthaler kept with the same side that started at Hartlepool on Saturday.

Whites next host FC Halifax Town in the National League on Saturday 16th March, kick-off 3 pm.

v

Hartlepool United v Dover Athletic

WHITES were knocked in their attempts to extend their four-point cushion from the relegation zone when they let a two-goal lead at Hartlepool United slip to lose 3-2 on Saturday.

With both sides pushing for a winner, Lee Molyneux grabbed an injury-time clincher in windy and wet conditions at the Super Six Stadium.

The substitute curled Josh Hawkes lay-off into the bottom corner to end Dover’s 100% win record against their County Durham opponents.

Two controversial spot-kicks after the break from Hawkes had restored parity after Andy Hessenthaler’s men had been ahead at the break thanks to fine finishes from Alfie Pavey and Jai Reason.

Athletic fashioned there first chance early on, however, Bedsente Gomis was unable to connect with Reason’s pinpoint cross to the back post.

Pavey then collected Reason’s pass and went from goal, but his 20-yard curling effort flew just wide of home stopper Scott Loach’s far post.

But the striker made no mistake on 28 minutes with his second in as many matches.

Mitch Brundle’s lofted ball over the Pool defence was accurately volleyed first time into the bottom corner by Pavey as Dover looked to continue their 100% winning record against United.

Dover captain Brundle then saved his side at the other end, clearing Luke James’ bobbling shot off the line.

And the hosts were punished for their miss as the away side made it two on 39 minutes.

Reason scored his sixth goal of the season for Dover, latching onto Anthony Jeffrey’s ball 20-yards from goal and placing the ball perfectly into the bottom corner, out of reach from Loach’s despairing dive.

Hartlepool nearly hit back immediately through Nicke Kabamba’s fierce 20-yard strike, only for visiting stopper Lee Worgan to make a strong one-handed save to push away the Havant & Waterlooville loanee’s shot.

The rebound fell for Mark Kitching, but the left-back – who was subsequently substituted for Molyneux three minutes before the break, ballooned his shot over the bar via the body of Brundle.

Brundle then almost put himself on the scoresheet when his drive from Bobby-Joe Taylor’s corner was well blocked by the home defence.

Following the restart, Jamie Allen sent two efforts wide, one from inside the area following good wing play from Jeffrey, and then another from just outside the penalty box.

James’ nearly reduced the arrears, but Worgan denied the striker from an angle with his legs.

New Hartlepool signing David Edgar could only look in disbelief after being denied a debut goal.

The Canadian international headed Liam Noble’s corner goalwards, only to see the ball hit Reason on the head and bounce up onto the crossbar before dropping down onto the goal line and away to safety.

The deficit was halved on 70 minutes when referee Leigh Doughty gave a penalty against Taylor after a cross struck the defender’s hand from five yards.

Hawkes converted and then nearly completed the comeback seconds later.

James found the midfielder in the box to fire goalwards, only for Worgan to block from point-blank range.

However, the equaliser arrived after another penalty was given three minutes after the previous. The referee deemed Jeffrey’s tackle in the area to be unfair and pointed to the spot, leaving Hawkes to smash the ball past Worgan to make the scores level.

Sub Inih Effiong nearly won it for Dover as Scott Loach Palmed away his curling shot and the home side countered Dover’s attack to grab a dramatic late winner.

Earlier, boss Hessenthaler made two changes to the side that started against Braintree Town last week.  Jeffrey and Danny McNamara came in for Scott Doe and Ricky Modeste.

Whites next host Boreham Wood in the National League on Tuesday 12th March, kick-off 7:45 pm.

Dover Athletic v Braintree Town

GOALKEEPER Lee Worgan starred on his National League debut for Dover to help his side win a crucial three points against 10-man Braintree.

Worgan produced a string of fine saves, including a stunning fingertip save to push Cameron James’ goalbound free-kick onto the crossbar and a penalty save from Korrey Henry.

The visitors started strongly and Worgan was soon in action, blocking Callum Morton’s angled drive after the West Brom loanee had been sent clear by Ifeani Allen a couple of minutes into the game.

Things took a turn for the worse for basement side Town when Ricky Gabriel was given his marching orders after four minutes after an off the ball incident with Alfie Pavey as Dover prepared to take a free-kick.

Dover made the man advantage count 15 minutes later as Pavey scored his first league goal for Whites.

The striker saw his initial header from a Bobby-Joe Taylor corner blocked but slammed home the rebound after visiting stopper Ben Killip pushed Mitch Brundle’s follow-up shot into Pavey’s path.

Worgan dived onto Allen’s low drive and at the other end, Kevin Lokko had a headed goal ruled out for a foul during a corner.

The chances kept coming for Dover as Pavey headed Taylor’s cross straight at Killip and Bedsente Gomis blasted well over from outside the box.

Worgan then produced an exceptional save just after the restart – James’ set piece seemed destined for the top corner, but the former Wales under-21 international somehow tipped the ball onto the crossbar before clutching onto Morton’s follow-up shot.

Lokko then headed another chance wide and Worgan continued to impress when referee Josh Smith pointed to the spot after Henry’s shot cannoned off Scott Doe’s arm in the area.

Henry ignored his teammate Allen’s pleas to hand the spot-kick duties over to designated taker Morton and Worgan left the striker red-faced, diving low to his left and then grabbing the ball at the second attempt.

Andy Hessenthaler’s men duly punished their opponents as Jai Reason marked his return to the side with a goal on 57 minutes, cheekily nodding Brundle’s cross over the onrushing Killip.

Taylor almost grabbed his first goal for Dover but chipped wide of the mark after being put through by Gomis.

Instead, it was Brundle who sealed the win in the 74th minute, heading home Ricky Modeste’s inch-perfect cross after the winger had beaten two Town players out wide after collecting Jamie Allen’s pass from inside in own half.

Killip redeemed himself as full-time drew to a close, diving full-length to turn away Stuart Lewis’ half-volley from Tayor’s cross.

The final whistle confirmed Dover’s first home win of 2019.

Earlier, boss Hessenthaler made four changes to the side that started at Maidenhead last week with Reason, Pavey and Worgan replacing Danny McNamara, Inih Effiong and Mitch Walker.

Maidenhead United v Dover Athletic

AN EARLY goal from Adrian Clifton kept Athletic entrenched in the National League dog fight.

The striker fired home on 13 minutes, via a deflection off defender Scott Doe, as Andy Hessenthaler’s side lost for the first time on their travels in five matches.

Dover’s defeat, their third in four National League matches, leaves them one point and one place above the relegation zone.

An early chance for the hosts saw Clifton’s cross-cum-shot deflected goalwards by Ryan Upward, however, right-back Danny McNamara was on hand to thump clear before the ball could cross the line.

Mitch Brundle then let fly with a volley from the edge of the box, with home keeper Carl Pentney forced into a finger-tip save over the bar.

After scoring, Clifton can only wonder how he was unable to double the lead 12 minutes later.

Walker parried Sam Nombe’s ball into the area only as far as the big striker, but Maidenhead’s top scorer smacked his shot against the crossbar.

Following the restart, Walker came to Dover’s rescue with a brave point-blank block to deny Nombe from close range following Upward’s pass across goal.

The danger wasn’t quite over as the rebound fell for James Akintunde, but the attacker blazed well over from a few yards.

Kevin Lokko headed McNamara’s cross wide of the mark as the away team pushed for a leveller and Akintunde smashed over from 20 yards at the other end of the pitch.

Substitute Alfie Pavey latched onto Brundle’s lofted pass, but Pentney was out quickly to block the striker’s header.

Odametey let fly from range following a swift counter-attack, however, Walker produced a brilliant save to stop the ball finding the top corner.

Upward nearly sealed the win for the Berkshire side, seeing his effort deflect inches wide.

Akintunde raced clear onto sub Mike Fondop’s ball, but the forward was once again denied by the onrushing Walker.

Fondop then skewed wide and Whites almost stole an unlikely point at the death.

Pavey found some space in the area but saw his strike hit the Maidenhead defence and bounce away to safety.

Earlier, boss Hessenthaler made one change to the side that won 3-1 at Salford last week, with Brundle back from injury to replace Jai Reason.

Whites next host Braintree Town in the National League on Saturday 2nd March, kick-off 3 pm.

v

Salford City v Dover Athletic

WHITES stunned promotion-chasing Salford with a stylish 3-1 win at the Peninsula Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind to an early Dennis Politic wonder strike, Dover rallied and were ahead thanks to a goal in each half from Danny McNamara and Scott Doe.

Jai Reason’s fine late finish sealed the win to end Athletic’s four-match winless National League run.

Earlier, It was nearly a nightmare start for Andy Hessenthaler’s men as Danny Whitehead sent a deflected goal-bound shot towards the bottom corner, however, Bedsente Gomis, back in the side following a three-game suspension, was on hand to stop the ball finding the back of the net.

However, the Frenchman was powerless to stop the hosts’ spectacular opener on nine minutes.

A clearance from Mitch Walker was poked towards Politic by Tom Walker’s challenge and Bolton loanee Politic, sent the ball goalwards from just within the opposition half and despite the Dover stopper’s best attempts to backpedal, the ball landed in the back of the net – A strike the onlooking David Beckham, in attendance after recently acquiring shares in City, would have been proud of.

The home side continued to apply the early pressure and nearly doubled their lead through Carl Piergianni, but Doe was on hand to hack the defender’s scuffed effort off the line following a corner.

Those goalline clearances proved pivotal as Andy Hessenthaler’s side levelled on 25 minutes thanks to Danny McNamara’s first goal for the club.

The Millwall loanee found the bottom corner with an assured finish after home goalie Chris Neal had parried Inih Effiong’s shot towards the young right-back.

Effiong himself went close, sending a 25-yard free kick whistling just wide of Neal’s far post.

Salford almost netted another stunner shortly after the restart as Tom Walker’s dipping volley flew inches off target.

And the Ammies were punished by Doe just a minute before the hour mark.

The centre-back powered Bobby-Joe Taylor’s pinpoint cross into the top corner as he also opened his account for Dover.

Neal blocked Gomis’ long-range effort, but could only watch as Reason scored from outside the area for the second week running.

Midfielder Reason collected substitute Anthony Jeffrey’s pass and curled the ball into Neal’s far corner from 25-yards, his fourth goal of the campaign.

Jeffrey then fired wide after sprinting clear of the Salford defence and at the other end, Dover were given a late fright when Walker crashed a header against the crossbar for the home team.

But Whites held on to move out of the relegation zone, two points clear and one place above 21st placed Havant & Waterlooville.

Boss Hessenthaler made two changes to the side that lost at home to Harrogate Town last weekend.  Ricky Modeste and Bedsente Gomis replaced Mitch Brundle and Josh Debayo.

Whites next travel to Maidenhead United on Saturday 23rd February for their next National League fixture, kick-off 3 pm.
