DAFC REVIEW: OCTOBER

OCTOBERƒ??S seven fixtures were full of goals as Dover scored 17, including the 6-1 rout of Braintree Town.

Whites won four and lost three in a rollercoaster month which left the club only three points off the play-off positions.

*BS* Chester 5-0 Dover *BF*

October didnƒ??t start brilliantly for Dover, despite having beaten Forest Green Rovers, Lincoln and York City in the weeks before this game.

Dover had started this match particularly well and felt aggrieved not to have been in front at half time; only good goalkeeping and off target shooting kept the scores level at the break.

Chester came out of the traps second half and within seven minutes of the restart had gained a 2 goal advantage in the game, much to the surprise and dismay of the Whites.

Injury to goalkeeper Steve Arnold and with no replacement on the bench did not help matters and although Dover had their chances to get back into the match, three further goals from Chester in the final 10 minutes sunk the Dover ship in an afternoon to forget.

The result left Dover in ninth place and three points off the play-off positions.

*BS*Dover 3-1 Sutton United*BF*

Dover put Saturday’s drubbing at the hands of Chester behind them with a 3-1 over Sutton, though the visitors did give Whites a few frights along the way.

Mitch Walker replaced the injured Arnold in goal with Sammy Moore picking up a late injury in the warm up.

Ricky Miller put Dover ahead within three minutes, having been played through on goal by Moses Emmanuel, bagging his eighth goal in the League.

Both sides created chances to score but it would be Dover who would get the second goal of the game. Miller showed his pace and finishing to latch onto a long ball and fire past the Sutton goalkeeper from a very tight angle in the 58th minute.

Whites then suffered the blow of going down to 10 men, following an Emmanuel tackle and Sutton were then rewarded for their efforts and pulled a goal back in the 74th minute.

While many teams may have gone on to concede another, being a man down, Dover regained their two goal lead thanks to a long range volley from Jim Stevenson.

Walker would remind Dover fans of his quality after he saved a late Sutton penalty.

The win moved Dover up a place to eighth.

*BS*Gateshead 4-2 Dover*BF*

Dover made the journey to Tyneside to play a club they had beaten in all the previous four meetings.

Whites made the breakthrough in the 36th minute thanks to a goal from Jack Parkinson, however Gateshead would go into the half time break 2-1 to the good.

Gateshead scored again only three minutes after the restart and although Ricky Miller was on hand to bring the scoreline to 3-2, two minutes later Gateshead regained the lead.

Doverƒ??s second away defeat in a week left the side ninth, but still within touching distance of fifth place.

*BS*Burgess Hill 0-5 Dover*BF*

The final qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup was a welcome distraction from the National League and provided a chance for Dover to get back on track with a good result.

Within 30 minutes Dover were 2-0 up from Miller and Mitch Pinnock goals and were somewhat cruising.

The home side suffered a double blow in the first half with an injury and then an injury to the newly substituted player, but this didnƒ??t take anything away from the Whitesƒ?? excellent performance.

Ricky Modeste made it 3-0 on the stroke of half time as Dover finished the half in rampant fashion.

Tyrone Marsh was a half time substitute and added a fourth after 51 minutes, before Miller took advantage of a defensive mix-up to pass the ball into the net in the 58th minute to complete the victory for Dover.

A solid win for Dover, albeit against lower league opposition meant that the Whites would face Cambridge United away in the 1st Round Proper on the 5th November.

*BS*Dover 6-1 Braintree*BF*

Following the 5-0 FA Cup win last time out, Dover were full of confidence going into the tie with Braintree, despite the fact that the Whites had only beaten the Iron once in the past four meetings.

Despite a good start from Dover, it was Braintree who struck first blood, with an exquisite curling finish to beat Walker after 12 minutes.

Dover heads didnƒ??t go down and rallied with Modeste almost instantly equalising from close range.

Braintree held onto their lead for just over five minutes as Aswad Thomasƒ?? shot bounced off two Braintree players before somehow finding its way into the net for the equaliser – that was his first goal for almost a year.

Cue Doverƒ??s top scorer Miller to turn on the style to stun Braintree into being 4-1 down after 33 minutes ƒ?? it took all of 11 minutes for Miller to get his hat-trick.

For his first goal, Miller received the ball from Stevenson side on to two Braintree defenders. Ricky turned with pace and purpose and managed to find space to be able to nestle the ball into the side of the goal.

Four minutes later, Miller found himself on the scoresheet again; this time making a driving run to smash home into the top corner of the Braintree goal ƒ?? not many goalkeepers would be able to keep that one out!

Miller completed his second hat-trick of the season when he beat two Braintree players and buried his effort past the helpless Braintree goalkeeper. That brought Millerƒ??s tally to 15 league goals this season so far!

After an initial setback, Dover were in control and threatening to run riot. With 40 minutes on the clock, they all but sealed the three points thanks to a goal from Jack Parkinson.

Moore expertly delivered his free kick into the Braintree area and when the ball wasnƒ??t dealt with, Parkinson was on hand to smash home from five yards out for his second goal in two games.

It wouldnƒ??t take long for Miller to get his fourth of the game. In the 48th minute, Dover were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position. From the set piece Ricky stepped up and smashed his shot low and hard and into the back of the net.

A fantastic drubbing of last seasonƒ??s play-off semi-finalists made it a near perfect afternoon of football at Crabble.

Dover moved up a place to eighth, just two points from fifth place

*BS*Bromley 0-2 Dover *BF*

Dover won their first Kent derby of the season thanks to a two-minute double from Miller and Ross Lafayette.

Brimming with belief following the 6-1 demolishing of Braintree Town only three days prior, the Whites went to Hayes Lane looking for all three points.

Although the home side could have taken the lead in the early stage of the game, Dover were showing their class and ability; forcing a good save from Bromley goalkeeper Julian and also a number of corners.

After 26 minutes Miller received a through ball from fellow forward Lafayette and Miller did the rest, slotting the ball under the oncoming Bromley goalkeeper and into the net.

Not to let Miller have all the limelight, Lafayette would double Doverƒ??s lead just three minutes later after taking advantage of a poor back-header and fired in from an acute angle.

Bromley had their chances but Dover defended excellently and saw out the clean sheet. In the end, Doverƒ??s control of the game never wavered and the win saw the men in blue move up to sixth place in the table.

*BS*Dover 1-4 Tranmere*BF*

Dover fancied their chances against Tranmere Rovers, having scored 18 goals in their last five games.

Rovers were one of the favourites to be promoted this season and unbeaten under their new manager.

Dover started the brighter and deserved their lead in the 22nd minute. Aswad Thomas connected with a Magri cross from the right to head home his second goal in as many matches.

Ten minutes later Tranmere were back on level terms, after some poor defending allowed Tollitt to dance through the area before Cook prodded home.

However, it was not to be Doverƒ??s most memorable second half. Defensive mistakes and also good play from Tranmere meant that by 80 minutes, Dover were 4-1 down.

The goals came from Cook, an unfortunate own-goal from Walker and Tollitt to make the result at the final whistle somewhat deceiving.

After some fine form and a series of good results, Dover succumbed to defeat this time.

The defeat means the Whites are seventh 7th, but only three points behind the play-off pack.

PREVIEW: WHITES V CHELTENHAM TOWN

*IS**BS*Dover Athletic vs Cheltenham Town
Sunday 24 January 2016 – 12.15 pm Kick-Off
Referee: Wayne Barratt*BF**IF*

*BS*HEADLINES*BF*
Dover Athletic will be looking to continue their excellent home record in this tie, with Whites having lost just twice in the league at Crabble all season. A win for Whites would see them cement their playoff intentions for this season, and the scalp of Cheltenham would be one to savour.

Current league leaders Cheltenham Town sit two points clear at the top of the Vanarama National League before this weekend’s round of matches, and as such could find themselves in second place before kick-off. That is dependent on how Forest Green fare at home to Braintree Town, but regardless of that result, they will be seeking three points in an attempt to return back to the Football League at the first time of asking.

The fixture will be televised LIVE on BT Sport, with the cameras coming to Crabble for the second time this season. Back in September, Whites beat Woking 2-0 on a Friday night in a match covered by the broadcaster.

*BS*THE OPPOSITION*BF*
Name: Cheltenham Town | Manager: Gary Johnson
Ground: Whaddon Road | Nickname: The Robins

April 25th 2015 is a date that will rank amongst the lowest points in Town’s history. After sixteen consecutive seasons in the Football League, a defeat at home to Shrewsbury Town consigned the club to relegation – an unwanted return back to non-league football. Also relegated were Tranmere Rovers, and it was the Merseyside club who the bookmakers thought more likely to bounce straight back – but Gary Johnson’s men have defied these odds thus far.

They have occupied top spot in the Vanarama National League since November 9th, and have topped the core of their squad up with some strong additions. They make no illusions about their primary aim being to return to League Two at the first time of asking, following in the footsteps of Bristol Rovers, who achieved that feat last season.

*BS*RECENT FORM*BF*
Coming into the game, Whites have a record of five wins and two defeats in their last seven matches. Those wins came against Aldershot Town (5-2), Whitehawk (3-1, FA Trophy), Welling United (2-1), Lincoln City (3-2) and Southport (2-1, FA Trophy), whilst defeats were suffered against Grimsby Town (0-1) and Bromley (2-3). It is evident that there is no problem in scoring goals, but Chris Kinnear will undoubtedly be keen for his clean sheet tally to rise in the remaining months of the season if their aspirations are to be reached.

Cheltenham’s record over the same number of matches reads won five and drawn two. The victories came against Chester (3-1), Chelmsford City (3-1, FA Trophy), Altrincham (1-0), Kidderminster Harriers (2-1) and Torquay United (1-0), with draws against Boreham Wood (0-0) and Oxford City (2-2, FA Trophy).

FA Cup Second Round – Cheltenham Town 0-1 Dover Athletic*IF*
Connor Essam’s 83rd minute strike against Cheltenham Town on Sunday afternoon secured Dover Athletic’s place in the FA Cup Third Round Proper not only for the second time in four years, but also only the second time in the club’s history. Chris Kinnear’s Whites travelled to Whaddon Road on the back of an impressive 10 game unbeaten run, where they hoped to cause an upset against their League 2 opponents to progress to the next round of the competition. Almost 600 travelling fans made the journey to Gloucestershire to witness their team’s outstanding win, which came thanks to a late strike from Connor Essam. *BS*TEAM NEWS*BF*
Whites are expected to remain unchanged, with Tyrone Sterling’s excellent recent performances set to see him keep his place in the side, at the continued expense of captain Jamie Grimes. That would mean the armband is given once again to Whites’ assist king Nicky Deverdics, who has recorded the second highest number of assists in the top five levels of English football, with the Geordie midfielder recently admitting that he is relishing his temporary role.

Stefan Payne will serve the third leg of his four game suspension, whilst Liam Bellamy’s welcome return to the matchday squad against Southport last weekend will give Chris Kinnear a different option if he wishes to set his stall out more defensively-minded against a potent Cheltenham attack.

*BS*TOP SCORERS*BF*
Dan Holman, who enjoyed a loan spell at Crabble last season, has recently joined Cheltenham and his already-scored 14 goals this season sit him three ahead of strike partner Billy Waters, who scored twice when the sides met at Whaddon Road back in September.

Whites’ top scorer in the league is Ricky Miller with 12 goals, one ahead of Stefan Payne and two more than Nicky Deverdics.

PREVIEW: WHITES VS BRAINTREE TOWN

THREE YEAR REPORT

*BS*Today marks the three year anniversary since Chris Kinnear and Jake Leberl were brought back to Dover Athletic Football Club, and Jack O’Sullivan provides a statistical insight into their time at the club this time around.*BF*

The appointment of Chris Kinnear as manager on January 19th 2013, bringing former Whites defender Jake Leberl in alongside him as assistant, was met with widespread positivity. The club were sitting in third place in what was then the Blue Square South, but on the back of five consecutive defeats, the change in management was made.

Speaking at the time to BBC Radio Kent, Dover Athletic chairman Jim Parmenter said: “*IS*The idea is to get into the Conference. We were clearly not happy with the situation the club found itself in. We had a board meeting on Friday where we took a decision to change the manager situation.

“We were on a losing streak and the manner of those losses were such that the board, to a man, were so concerned about the situation we felt we had to take the action that we did. Everybody knew what the targets were at the beginning of the season and there has been a lot of money invested to make it the year that it [a promotion challenge] happens.*IF*”

Handed the reins with around three months left of the season, that promotion challenge was tackled head-on. The side narrowly lost in the playoff final that season, to Salisbury City, but the form showed in the latter half of the season gave everybody confidence that the following season would be more successful.

A rollercoaster 2013/14 season ultimately ended in joyous scenes. In the FA Cup, Dover made it through to the Second Round, losing 1-0 away at MK Dons, but it was in their league campaign that real success was achieved. Barry Cogan’s penalty five minutes from time in the last match of the regular season, against Hayes & Yeading, propelled the club into the playoffs. A memorable semi-final victory against Sutton United will live long in the memory of all Whites fans, but that 3-0 win at Gander Green Lane was only the starter in one of the greatest meals that Dover Athletic have ever served up.

We are now able to confirm that it was indeed Nathan Elder who put the ball in the Ebbsfleet net, with his header sealing a 1-0 win to bring the club back to the top flight of non-league football.

Parmenter’s stated aim had been achieved, and the job was now in hand to consolidate the club within the upper echelons of the fifth tier. Against all odds, and despite a poor start to the 2014/15 season, a final position of eighth was achieved. Coupled with the club’s progress to the FA Cup Third Round, in which Premier League side Crystal Palace came to town at a sold-out Crabble, last season was evidence that Whites were well and truly back.

Over the summer, the mythical second season syndrome was touted far and wide, with many onlookers convinced that the club would struggle in the 2015/16 season. Despite those claims, the club continue to go from strength to strength and, on the three year anniversary of Chris and Jake returning to Crabble, Whites are fourth in the Vanarama National League, and in the last 16 stage of the FA Trophy.

Superb victories have been picked up on the road against Tranmere Rovers, Lincoln City, Gateshead and Torquay United amongst others, whilst performances – and results – at home have picked up under the duo’s stewardship.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the statistics and key matches underpinning the success of the last three years.

*BS*MATCHES PLAYED: 176
MATCHES WON: 86 (49%)
MATCHES DRAWN: 41 (23%)
MATCHES LOST: 49 (28%)
GOALS SCORED: 285

Albeit at a slightly lower level, Kinnear’s win-rate of 49% is better than Ronaldo Koeman’s record at Southampton, better than Roberto Martinez has in his tenure at Everton, and even beats what Kenny Dalglish achieved at Liverpool – so move over King Kenny.. King Kinnear is here!

Looking at the home and away breakdown of these statistics throws up an unusual statistic – Whites have scored more goals, more often, away from home than at Crabble.

*BS*MATCHES AT CRABBLE: 87
MATCHES WON AT CRABBLE: 45 (52%)
MATCHES DRAWN AT CRABBLE: 20 (23%)
MATCHES LOST AT CRABBLE: 22 (25%)

MATCHES DRAWN AWAY FROM HOME: 21 (24%)
MATCHES LOST AWAY FROM HOME: 27 (30%)

*BS*BIGGEST WIN: 8-0 vs Margate (3rd September 2013)
BIGGEST LEAGUE WIN: 6-1 vs Dartford (17th January 2015), 5-0 vs Nuneaton Town) (25th November 2014)*BF*

Thanks for the last three years, Chris and Jake – here’s to plenty more success!

RAFFERS KEEPS DISTANCE

RAFFERS KEEPS DISTANCE

*BS*Speaking to doverathletic.com, Whites goalkeeper Andy Rafferty says he won’t be watching the highlights from Sunday’s blockbuster against league leaders Cheltenham at Crabble – regardless of the result!*BF*

And the former Hartlepool United shot-stopper admitted that’s nothing new.

He said: “It has always been that way. When I’m away from the game, well I’m away and I like to distance myself from it.

“Football is my living, but you don’t need to live it 24/7.

“And besides, I just don’t like seeing myself on TV – I hate it to be honest, I really do. It has always been that way.”

That stance means Rafferty misses out on seeing himself produce some stunning saves like the one at Lincoln and the home clash with Welling when goals looked certain to be scored.

Or does it?

It seems he does venture online occasionally – to have a sneak peek at a ‘worldy’ he may have made or to analyse something if it hasn’t gone as well as he knows it should have.

Southport’s goal on Saturday, when a long range effort went under his body, is an example of that according to Rafferty.

He said: “I know I should have done better and of course I am disappointed – no goalkeeper likes conceding a goal in whatever circumstances.

“But in fairness, that sort of shot, one that dips just in front of you, are the hardest to deal with in the game.

“That’s not an excuse and I’m not going to run away from it. I’m not going to hide – I know I should have done better.

“Now I’ve got to ensure I work hard to improve that aspect of my game, and I will.

“Believe me, you are always learning in this game.”
