CLIVE CAN'T WAIT

CLIVE CAN’T WAIT

*BS*WHITES supremo Clive Walker is expecting a stern test on Saturday against high-flying Conference South side Bishop’s Stortford and urges the fans to be the 12th man for Dover.*BF*

The experienced boss gave an audio interview to WhitesLive and spoke about preparing for the big game on Saturday, injury issues and how the fans have been outstanding this season.

Speaking to Justin Allen about Saturday’s match, Clive said: “It’d be nice to get in the first round [proper] of the FA Cup. It’s not going to be easy, obviously, because they’re a good side but I’m pleased we’re in that situation.”

Bishop’s Stortford boast a strong squad of players and results are following in Conference South, as the club lie just three points off the top.

Notable squad members at Woodside Park include former Arsenal youth goalkeeper Chris Wright, young left winger Ashley Fuller (formerly of Gravesend) and young hotshot Charles Ademeno, who is on work experience from Southend United.

Despite those young starlets, Clive said: “They’ve got a very experienced side. [It will be] probably one of the hardest ones this season. So unless we’re on our game we’ve got a problem.”

Whites are likely to be without Glen Knight (dislocated finger), John Keister (banned for four more games) and Danny Chapman.

Clive said: “Danny has had a hamstring problem since Sittingbourne [August Bank Holiday Monday]. We’ve had scans on it. We can’t find anything wrong with it.”

In what promises to be a special atmosphere at Crabble on Saturday, Walker knows just how important an extra bit of positive vocal support can be to win football matches.

Clive praised the supporters, saying: “The fans have been fantastic this season. They’ve not moaned at them, they ain’t groaned at them, they’ve got behind them. When people are with you, you feel that.

“Support makes a big difference to players, gives them a yard and hopefully we’ll have that Saturday.”

DANNY'S INJURY BLUES

DANNY’S INJURY BLUES

*BS*DANNY CHAPMAN this week visited a specialist about a complex injury problem which has caused him to be on the sidelines for two months.

*BF*The Whites midfield ace admits, although he is frustrated at not being involved in first-team action, he understands the importance of getting to the bottom of the problem.

Danny, whose experience will badly be missing from the Dover midfield in the big FA Cup clash with Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday, said rumours that his playing career could be over were complete nonsense.

He said: “I was playing with injections because that’s the kind of player I am. I will do anything to play and help Clive and the lads out – but the pain became too much during the match against Sittingbourne earlier in the season.

“I have a sharp pain at the bottom of my right buttock and it’s just impossible to play with it at the moment. I’ve had scans and am now having intensive physio.

“At first, I thought it might be sciatica but, thankfully, the scans have showed that’s not the case, which is a big relief.

“We did think the injury would only keep me out for a couple of weeks but it’s been so much worse than that – and I must admit it’s got me down.

*Q1*”All I want to do is play football and the frustrations at one point made me feel like jacking it in altogether. But I don’t want to do that – and hopefully all the problems will be sorted out soon.

“I could play with a painkilling injection but don’t want to suddenly pull up at a vital moment, and cost us a goal or something like that.

“That would be letting the club and my team-mates down – and that is not what I want to do.

“I’m not one of these players who likes sitting on the sidelines taking my wages – and am trying everything to get myself 100 per cent fit.

“Of course, the lads have done tremendously well in the FA Cup. Although I am happy for the lads, it’s not easy watching them play, so I’ve been helping Clive out with some scouting to take my mind off things.”

The club are awaiting a report from their own specialist on the injury.

FANS’ CHALLENGE

*BS*Saturday’s game will be difficult but the prize is huge. We need everyone to be on form, especially the twelfth man, the Whites crowd.

*BF*Ever wondered why we haven’t done so well in the past in front of big crowds? Maybe it is because 1500 plus turn up and watch in silence. Not exactly inspiring.

Saturday is expected to produce our biggest crowd for some time and the Jolly Boys have agreed to give it their all and we want you, the Dover fans, to give them your backing. The plan is this: the Jolly Boys and Girls have promised to keep up 90 minutes of non-stop chanting* throughout the game.

The aim is to get 100 people to pledge a minimum of £5 each with the money going towards paying off the overdraft. You can make it more if you want.

Donations can be made by Paypal or by cash or cheque payable to Dover Athletic Football Club, and handed in to Joe Lowney at the club shop.

To get the ball rolling Andy Stevens and I are donating £15 each.

Donations open now and close at 9am on Friday. There is only a 48 hour window of opportunity.

Support the Jollys as they selflessly slaughter their vocal chords. Should be a win-win situation – great support, help with clearing the debt and maybe, just maybe, a great result.

Even better, join in yourself.

In the unlikely event that they fail, sponsors will have the option of having their donation returned.

I know there have been other cash calls over the years but a game like this might not come round for many years. Just imagine…Whites on TV against a league side…worth pushing the boat out for.

One other thing – we need someone to volunteer as an independent verifier. All that involves is standing on the terrace and confirming whether the Jollys did the business.

White Army.

*BS*LIST OF ONLINE SPONSORS SO FAR:

Andy Stevens £15
Andrew Stucken £15
David Hamilton £5
Justin Allen £20
Dave Weber £20
David Marsh £5
Dachshund £20
John Sheather £5
TOTAL: £105

*BF**If we have to change ends before kick off the Jollys are allowed time to take up positions. Also, if we score or there is another major incident such as a penalty for Dover, sending off, etc., then the usual roaring is allowed. A few seconds are also allowed for changing songs.
