Dover Athletic secured all three points at Farnborough with a hard-fought 1-0 victory, as Jack Bates’ superb first-half solo goal proved the difference between the sides.

The Whites had to weather heavy pressure after the interval, with Baptiste clearing off the line and Farnborough striking the crossbar, but a disciplined defensive display saw Dover hold on for a valuable clean sheet. New signing Sak Hassan, whose arrival was announced shortly before kick-off, also made his first appearance from the bench during the second half.

Dover made a lively start and won an early free-kick out wide after Bates was brought down in the third minute. His delivery was turned behind for the first corner of the afternoon, before the resulting ball into the box found Jones attacking it, only for the referee to award Farnborough a foul.

Baptiste found space to drive down the wing six minutes later, although his chipped cross was unable to pick out a teammate. Farnborough then came close to an extraordinary own goal on 11 minutes when goalkeeper Thomas attempted to clear the ball but struck Ehmer, with the deflection rolling dangerously towards goal before staying out.

Dover threatened again on the counter five minutes later. Bates carried the ball forward before Andrews looked to provide the final pass for Sheriff, with the move eventually resulting in a corner. Farnborough were then forced into an early change when Lapslie was unable to continue, while another stoppage for treatment shortly afterwards contributed to a stop-start opening period.

The hosts created a dangerous moment from a low corner on 27 minutes, with the ball flashing across the Dover penalty area without receiving the touch needed to turn it goalwards. Clear chances remained limited at both ends, but Dover made the breakthrough ten minutes later in impressive fashion.

Barratt misplaced a pass inside the Dover half and Bates was immediately onto it. The midfielder drove almost the entire length of the pitch, using his strength to hold off the recovering challenge before cutting inside and calmly slotting the ball into the net to give Dover the lead.

Six minutes were added at the end of the first half and Farnborough were presented with a late opportunity from a free-kick in a dangerous position out wide, but Walker came through the crowd to punch the delivery clear. Dover then looked to break through Sheriff in the closing moments of the half, with the forward dragged back and a Farnborough player shown a yellow card.

Dover therefore went into the interval with a one-goal advantage, but Farnborough emerged strongly after the restart and immediately began applying sustained pressure.

The hosts went close four minutes into the second half when a corner eventually fell to Ehmer inside the area. His first-time strike was heading towards goal, but Baptiste was perfectly positioned to clear the ball off the line. Walker was then called into action a minute later when Farnborough won possession in midfield and broke quickly, with the Dover goalkeeper making the save.

Farnborough continued to pile on the pressure and Dover survived an even bigger scare on 53 minutes. Another corner caused problems inside the area as the ball ricocheted around the box before eventually cannoning off the crossbar. The hosts continued to throw bodies forward, with Dover defenders repeatedly putting themselves in the way of efforts as Farnborough searched for an equaliser.

With the home side on top, Dover responded with a double change on 57 minutes. Andrews and goalscorer Bates were replaced by Soares-Junior and Hassan, giving the new signing his first minutes in a Dover shirt.

Farnborough continued to press immediately after the changes, with Bloomfield closing down Jones inside the Dover box and blocking his attempted clearance to force another corner. However, the substitutions gradually helped the Whites regain a foothold and the game became more balanced as it moved beyond the hour mark.

Dover had an opportunity to extend their advantage in the 67th minute when Hassan delivered a dangerous corner into the area, but Sheriff sent his effort over the crossbar. Hassan was involved again eight minutes later, whipping another inviting ball into the box towards Baptiste, although the final touch would not come.

Farnborough continued to enjoy possession but struggled to find the finishing touch. An effort was sent high into the stands in the 77th minute before Dover made another change two minutes later, with Wilkinson replacing Williams.

The hosts continued to probe as the final ten minutes approached, putting together some neat passing moves without creating the decisive opening. Walker remained alert at the other end of the pressure, coming off his line on 86 minutes to claim a dinked ball over the Dover defence.

Farnborough pushed forward again in the closing stages and another effort flew over the crossbar with a minute of normal time remaining. Four additional minutes were indicated, with Fish replacing Sheriff as Dover looked to see out the result.

The Whites held firm through the remaining moments to secure a 1-0 victory, three points and a clean sheet on the road. Attention now turns to FA Cup action next weekend, when Dover welcome Folkestone Invicta to the Megger Community Stadium.
