MATCH PREVIEW: KING’S LYNN TOWN VS DOVER ATHLETIC

Andy Hessenthaler’s side travel to Norfolk on Saturday aiming to bounce back from Tuesday’s night disappointing defeat.

Whites were hit for five for the second time at home this season – their sixth league loss so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, our hosts on Saturday have picked up six points from their last three games.  The linnets have beaten Woking and Barnet in recent weeks, as well as knocking League Two Port Vale out of the FA Cup, with a second round trip to League One Portsmouth their reward.

The Linnets were promoted to the National League last season on points per game at the expense of York City when the season was curtailed due to the pandemic.

Dover are no strangers to the The Walks Stadium, having played there last season in the FA Trophy First Round Proper.  It was the hosts who advanced to the next round on that occasion, winning 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

Town have brought in nine players for this season, including Jamar Loza who has a Premier League appearance for Norwich to his name, coming on as a second half substitute in the Canaries 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in 2014.

Since leaving Norwich, he has played in the National League with Maidstone United and Woking, before moving back to Norfolk this summer when he signed for King’s Lynn.

Cameron King and Simon Power have both joined the club for the second time in their careers. King, who has joined from FC Halifax Town played for The Linnets in 2018 before moving to Halifax, whilst Power has started his second loan spell at the club.

Like Loza, King also started his career and Norwich, whilst Power is currently on loan at The Linnets from the Championship side.

Kyle Callan-McFadden, who joined the club on Friday morning and is also a graduate of the Norwich City youth academy, joined the club after spells in the USA and Ireland with Orlando City B and Sligo Rovers, respectively.

Kairo Mitchell, a product of the Leicester City academy, joined the club after spells in non-league with Nuneaton and Coalville Town. At the beginning of October he signed for fellow Kent side Dartford, however only 20 days later he signed for The Linnets. The Grenadan international has also scored three times for his country.

Finally, Tai Fleming joined the club after completing a two year scholarship at Yeovil, whilst Archie Mair, Danny Lupano and Kyle Barker have joined on loan from Norwich, Hull and Peterborough, respectively.

King’s Lynn’s Player to Watch

New signing Loza has scored four goals in his last three league games, including both goals in their 2-0 win against Barnet on Tuesday night.

NATIONAL LEAGUE LETTER

The following is an open letter from The National League to David Emery, editor in chief of the Non-League Paper, with our Chairman, Jim Parmenter, being one of the League directors to have signed it.

Dear David,

We are writing to you jointly as the overwhelming number of elected directors of The National League.

We were, to say the least, disappointed by the one-sided coverage extended by you to the issue raised by a small minority of clubs in relation to the distribution of the funding from The National Lottery.

We, as the Board of The Competition, together with our Chairman, Brian Barwick, our Vice-Chairman, Jack Pearce, and our Chief Executive Officer, Michael Tattersall, are exclusively charged with the management of the Competition.

To date, we have seen all of our clubs through the early termination of last season, the commencement and completion of Play-Offs, the retention of all our sponsorships and broadcasting contracts, and the commencement of the current season.

We have also negotiated with the assistance of The Football Association and DCMS ( The Department for Digital Culture Media and Sports) a rescue package for all of our clubs amounting to some £10m over a three-month period.

We had to work quickly to ensure that money was in place and ensure the survival of many of our member clubs.

We had to work equally quickly to work out a methodology of distribution to ensure that clubs in need received the monies without delay.  The great majority of our clubs have expressed their gratitude for what is, to date, a unique funding package in football.

Over the past few weeks, some nine or ten clubs have expressed their dissatisfaction with what they actually received without seeming to recognise or acknowledge that the great majority of clubs were perfectly satisfied with their distribution.

You quote that premise is considered an “absurd defence“.  What would be absurd would be to ignore the views of the great majority of our clubs in favour of those of a small minority.

We, as a Board are always open to fair comment and criticism, not to mention positive suggestions.  In fact, what we have received is a regular diatribe of criticism from this small section of clubs which has, at times, been positively defamatory and has never been less than ungrateful and self-serving.

This has now culminated in those clubs currently publicly demanding the resignation of our long-serving Chairman, Brian Barwick and previously in statements, emails, and blogs that of our even longer serving Vice Chairman, Jack Pearce.

Both are well-respected figures in the world of football with unblemished reputations of the highest level. These clubs who are now “ demanding “ this action simply, as we continue to maintain, do not represent the views of the majority of the clubs and certainly do not represent the views of the Board which continues to have the utmost faith, confidence, and respect for those two officers.

These clubs have not only brought our Competition into disrepute but have severely hurt two individuals who have worked tirelessly and ceaselessly throughout the pandemic for the greater good with amazing results.

As these clubs well know there are proper ways to air complaints and issues within our Rules and yet they have sought to circumvent those rules by their unreasonable demands and personal attacks.

Their main complaint seems to be aimed at the methodology of distribution.  The Chairman offered their representatives the opportunity of meeting him face to face on a zoom call at which no club from the National Division attended.  In any event, the meeting lasted a couple of hours and was felt to be constructive.  They have been told on several occasions that the distribution is under constant review.

We did not need to be told by them, or by a group of MP’s or indeed, your newspaper, that the issue should be looked at by an independent group.  We had already reached that conclusion at a Board Meeting held on 5th November and had implemented the establishment of a Review sub-committee, again within our rules.

You quote from a Commons answer given by the Sports Minister and then fail to reach the correct conclusion from it.  He stated (as long ago as 30th September, well before an agreement was reached with Camelot, not the DCMS, by the way) that gate receipts will “drive the criteria. “ He did not say then and clubs have never been told that they would be the only criteria.  Attendances and gate receipts were an element of the methodology of distribution and continue to be, but they are not the only criteria to be taken into account.

The “spokesperson “of the allegedly “aggrieved clubs “ claims, without any evidence whatsoever, that the Board has made “serious errors of judgment“ in making unilateral, subjective decisions regarding distribution which ignore government guidelines and ignore the board’s conflict of interest.  That is simply incorrect.

Even as it stands the first distribution fully complied with the terms of the agreement with Camelot which was, in turn, agreed and approved by The FA and the DCMS.  Similarly, all the “aggrieved “clubs have had explained to them that there is absolutely no question of conflict.  The directors are elected by all clubs and do not represent their own clubs on the Board.

Tempting though it has been for us as a Board, who have been libelled as a group and in some cases individually, to resort to legal action, we have for the moment kept our counsel, taken all the criticism on the chin, and simply battled on to seek to ensure that this funding is renewed after the initial period. Not one of our critics has offered to assist us, merely to criticise us, sometimes in the vilest of terms. This is despite the fact that it has been made clear to all clubs, not just the vociferous few, that any club with serious financial problems should come to the Board and all efforts will be made to find a way to assist them.

We will not be swayed from our efforts by a noisy minority, nor by bullying that gives no credit to its perpetrators. We will not be running to the media to create unfair and misleading headlines. We will get on with the job in hand and give our Chairman, Vice-Chairman, CEO, and the Review Committee every assistance in ensuring that the damage these clubs have caused is not irreparable.

Yours sincerely,
Anthony Kleanthous

MATCH PREVIEW: DOVER VS WOKING

Manager Andy Hessenthaler’s men are back in action on Tuesday after an extended break from National League football.

An early FA Cup exit and the postponement of the trip to Wealdstone last weekend due to COVID-19 issues mean Dover have not played since the 1-0 home defeat to Altrincham on the last day of October.

Tuesday’s match was given the green light after all Dover players and staff tested negative for COVID-19.

Woking have played two games in November, drawing 1-1 with Yeovil Town after bowing out of the FA Cup 3-2 to Gillingham despite being two goals ahead.

The Cards took all three points in a dramatic game in this fixture last season, coming from 1-0 down to win 2-1.  Ricky Modeste had slotted 10-man Dover ahead after Kurtis Cumberbatch received an early red card.  Jake Hyde leveled on the half-hour mark and Tony Edser curled in a late winner.

Both teams were only able to play each other once last campaign, with the match at the Laithwaite Stadium, postponed due to the pandemic.

Woking boss Alan Dowson has added a number of players this season, including loanees from the EFL.

Josh Davison and Ben Dempsey have joined on loan from Charlton Athletic, with Both players having featured in the Championship for the Addicks.

Meanwhile, Koran Lofthouse, Slavi Spasov, and Malachi Napa have all joined on loan from Oxford United, with the latter two also making appearances for their parent club. Napa also has played in League Two for now-defunct club Macclesfield Town.

Tyler Reid and Sam Cartwright have also joined from West Brom and Peterborough United respectively.

Dowson has also signed John Goddard on a free transfer from Ebbsfleet. The winger has previous experience of playing in the Football League with Swindon and Stevenage, but in more recent years he has played in the National League with Bromley, Aldershot, and the aforementioned Fleet.

Charlie Cooper also moved to Woking this summer from FC Halifax Town. Like Goddard he has spent the last few seasons in the National League with Boreham Wood and Halifax, but he also featured higher up the football pyramid with Newport and Forest Green Rovers.

Cooper was part of the Rovers’ promotion-winning squad to League Two in 2017.

Finally, former Arsenal and Manchester United youth player Tyler Reid joined the club after leaving Swindon Town in October.

The Cards also have ex-England international and former Premier League player Matt Jarvis on their books.  The 34-year-old, who has over 200 Premier League games to his name, scored on his debut for the Surrey side last season against Maidenhead United.

Woking’s Player to Watch

New signing Davison is in red-hot form at the moment, having scored four in his last five games in all competitions.

CLUB STATEMENT

Dover Athletic can confirm that all the management, backroom staff, and players have tested negative for Covid-19 after the club received the results on Saturday evening.

Training was cancelled on Friday and all were tested privately at Crabble before being sent home as a precaution after the club was made aware of the situation on Thursday evening.

It means manager Andy Hessenthaler’s squad will return to training on Monday and Tuesday’s National League game against Woking at Crabble will go ahead as scheduled.

WEALDSTONE GAME POSTPONED

Saturday’s National League game away at Wealdstone FC has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues.

Our staff and players were tested at Crabble this morning and with the results not being known until tomorrow at the earliest, under COVID Protocols we will not be allowed to travel until these results are known.

We were made aware of the situation on Thursday evening and we acted immediately, arranging for all the squad and staff to be tested privately on Friday morning.

The protocol requires tests based on symptoms – as soon as reported, tests were booked.

Regular testing is not a requirement at our level.

A new date for the match will be arranged as soon as possible.

LOUIS WINS GOAL OF THE MONTH

Louis Collin’s goal against Eastleigh has been voted for as the October goal of the month by Dover fans.

The young striker’s fine finish to put Whites 2-1 ahead received over 30% of the votes, edging out the next placed goal, Ade Azeez’ winner later in the same game.
