MATCH PREVIEW: STOCKPORT COUNTY VS DOVER ATHLETIC

A first trip outside of Kent  this season awaits Andy Hessenthaler’s men when they travel to Stockport on Saturday.

Whites beat Notts County on the opening day, however the elation of that win soon turned to disappointment on Tuesday night with a 4-1 defeat at Kent rivals Bromley.

Meanwhile, Stockport made up for their opening day defeat at Torquay with a 2-1 victory against visiting FC Halifax Town.

Dover took all three points in this fixture last season thanks to a second half brace from Inih Effiong. However, Effiong is one of six players who started that day that have since left the club.

Only Josh Passley, Will De Havilland, Jack Munns, Oscar Gobern and Steve Rigg started that game and are still at the club, whilst Kurtis Cumberbatch and Paul Rooney who are also still under contract were on the bench.

This afternoon’s hosts have made 11 signings this summer, including John Rooney who scored 17 goals last season for Barrow as they were promoted to League Two.

They have also signed Jamie Stott on a permanent deal after two previous loan spells at the club.

Interestingly, County have also signed brothers Connor and James Jennings. Both have previous experience of playing in the EFL. Connor has played in the Football League with Tranmere, whilst older brother James has had spells in League Two with Macclesfield, Mansfield, Cheltenham and Morecambe.

Mark Kitching has also joined The Hatters this summer, signing from fellow National League side Hartlepool United. He scored the equaliser in his home debut for the club in their win against Halifax on Tuesday night.

Stockport’s Player to Watch

As already mentioned, attacking midfielder John Rooney joined County from Barrow this summer and this season will be his ninth campaign in a row in the National League.

In the eight previous seasons he has played for four different clubs and has scored 70 goals and got 37 assists in 268 games.

His 17 goals last season had him tied for fourth in the overall goalscoring ranks and he was only three goals off the top spot.

VIDEO: MANAGER REACTION

Andy Hessenthaler shares his views following Dover’s 4-1 defeat at Bromley on Tuesday night.

YOUNG WHITES ADVANCE IN CUP

The Dover Athletic academy are through to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup following a 2-0 victory at Hanworth Villa.

Mike Sandmann’s youngsters made up for last year’s 5-0 cup defeat to the same team by putting in a dominant performance in Monday’s Second Qualifying Round.

The academy showed their intent from the off and took the lead in the 16th minute through Noah Carney after some really good play from George Nikaj.

Young whites’ second arrived just before the hour mark thanks to Nikaj’s free kick.

Academy manager Sandmann said after the game: “It was a really pleasing, solid performance from the academy and the boys did well to limit our opponents to a few chances.

“I thought we started strongly and could have been ahead even earlier, so I was really happy with how we played; it was a good performance.”

Dover’s academy will host Lewes in the next round.

MATCH PREVIEW: BROMLEY VS WHITES

Manager Andy Hessenthaler’s side will be looking to make it back to back wins in the National League when they travel to Bromley for the first Kent derby of the season this evening.

Whites won their opening game after a debut goal by Millwall loanee Harry Ransom sealed an impressive win against Notts County at Crabble on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Bromley will be starting their league season tonight after not playing on Saturday after their scheduled opponent Macclesfield Town were wound up in the High Court over unpaid debts.

Honours finished even between Dover and Bromley last season after both beat each other 3-0.

Dover won the Boxing Day clash at Crabble before The Ravens avenged that loss on New Year’s Day.

However, Whites’ team has changed dramatically since that defeat with only Yusuf Mersin, Will De Havilland (pictured), Josh Passley and Jack Munns starting both the game on New Year’s Day and Saturday’s victory against Notts County.

It’s also all change for summer signing Sam Wood, who played in both of the games over the Christmas period for our opponents’.

Wood, who has been appointed our captain this season, played 74 times in the National League for Bromley.

Tonight’s hosts have made six permanent signings and two loan signings this month, including former Whites loanee James Alabi who signed for our hosts after being released from Leyton Orient.

During his time with Dover, Alabi scored one goal in 11 games.

Byron Webster and Liam Trotter, who both have Championship experience joined our hosts this summer.

Webster has spent a total of six seasons in that division throughout his career, playing for Doncaster Rovers, Yeovil Town and Millwall. He has most recently spent time in League Two with Carlisle United.

Meanwhile, a lot of Trotter’s career has been spent in the Championship, spending time with Ipswich Town, Millwall, Bolton and Nottingham Forest.

They have also been able to loan back in Reeco Hackett-Fairchild from Portsmouth.

Bromley’s Player to Watch

Forward Michael Cheek knows how to score in this division, having scored consistently in it for the past five seasons.

In this time, he has played for four different clubs and has score 75 goals in 194 games.

He was also top scorer for our opponents last season with 12 goals.

This game will be played behind closed doors, however, you can watch the game for £9.99 via Bromley’s ‘Matchday Live’ live stream.

STREAMING SERVICE ISSUES

I am sorry for the delay in getting this statement to you.  I wanted to ensure that I had enough information to provide a meaningful response to the issues being experienced by some supporters.  I am also sorry for the length of this statement but wanted to ensure I provided you all with as much detail as I could.

Our new streaming service launched yesterday, for arguably one of the biggest games of our season, in terms of viewer figures.   From the response on social media and by email it is clear we have had some significant teething problems.  This has been hugely frustrating for supporters and for this I apologise.  Please know we share your frustration!

THE MAIN ISSUE – EMAIL LINK

I have identified one area where we have made an error.   Our streaming provider, ‘StreamingVideoProvider’ hosts our video stream, handles signups, and passes your transaction detail across to Stripe, our payment provider for payment.  Once confirmed, SVP sends you a confirmation email, this is all automatic.  The club are not involved in this process.

It is apparent, thanks to some eagle-eyed supporters, that the URL contained within the confirmation email was pointing to the embedded player on our club website.  This was not our intention; it should have pointed directly to the stream itself (hosted by StreamingVideoProvider).

While the link provided would work perfectly well under normal circumstance, due to the unusually large volume of people going to our club website to view the embedded version of the stream, our website club crashed.  I must make it clear, that while the club website crashed, the stream did not.

Once we were made aware of this issue, we did our best to communicate the direct link via social media, however, as the game and stream was well underway and our small team were now tied up with operating the service, we may not have got the message to everyone, again for this I am sorry.

CONFIRMATION EMAILS

We spent much of Friday night and Saturday morning responding to supporters that had not been able to track down their confirmation email.  Many of these were down to typos in the email address or apple pay / google pay sending over a different email address than the supporter expected.

In some cases, despite checking spam etc, some supporter still could not find the email, in this case we sent out a manual email including the details.  In the latter case, we are assured by the Streaming provider that all  confirmation emails had been sent, so we have asked for this to be looked at further – we have noticed that most issues in this regard effected people with btinternet and gmail email addresses.

Finally, we have had a couple of reports about passwords not being valid for this game.  In all cases we have investigated, and it is clear this is because the supporter had purchased a different game.

2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATIONS

As your purchase allows only one stream per device, this system is in place to allow you to swap from one device to another.   We have been assured by the streaming provider that this will only ever be triggered when you attempt to use your password on a more than one device, using a supporter browser.  Using non-supported viewing devices or attempting to use in a business or commercial network setting may have unforeseen results.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

We have identified several steps we can take to correct many of the teething problems we have had yesterday:

  1. To allow our small team to handle the inevitable admin around purchases, we will close sales at least 24 hours before the game. In this way we can deal with all queries in plenty of time to ensure supporters have the info they need.
  2. We will ensure that the URL within confirmation email is correct and validated before every stream goes on sale.
  3. We will investigate with the streaming provider why it is some supporters are unable to find their confirmation emails. This may take some time as it is likely being caused by outside factors, rather than our Streaming Provider.
  4. We will only have one game available to purchase at any one time, to avoid supporters accidently selecting a game that they did not intend.

PLEA TO SUPPORTERS

This service costs the club a great deal of money to provide, it is not the cash cow that some would have us believe, please be aware that for every refund there is a direct cost to the club, on top of the upfront streaming costs we have already paid to the streaming host.  We recognise that this first attempt has not gone well, but we can assure you it is not for want of trying.

This service is provided with the best intentions and we do not take your purchase for granted.

We know it is a lot to ask, but we’d really appreciate you considering offering your payment as a one-off ‘donation’ we would be incredibly appreciative, we know it is a lot to ask, given the far from perfect start!  It would, however, allow us to further invest in improving the overall service and ensure focus on correcting the teething problems, rather then worrying about the sustainability of the service.  We are currently looking at what and how we can offer supporters helping us out on this occasion.

REFUNDS

If you have not been able to access the stream or if you have not been able to view most of the game, we are able to provide a refund.  Please send your full name, along with the email address and postcode used to purchase to [email protected].  We would appreciate your patience.  Your refund may take up to 2 weeks to come back to your card.

THANK YOU

Once again, please accept my personal apology for a far from ideal start, but please know we have and continue to put in countless hours and late nights to get it right.  The only thing we want, is to be able to provide a great streaming service for supporters to enjoy.

VIDEO: MANAGER REACTION

Check out what our boss Andy Hessenthaler had to say following our win against Notts County on the opening day of the National League season on Saturday.

MATCH REPORT: DOVER ATHLETIC 1-0 NOTTS COUNTY

Millwall loanee Harry Ransom sealed his impressive debut with a match-winning goal against Notts County at Crabble on Saturday.

The big centre half headed home Jack Munns’ pin-point corner in the final minute of normal time to earn manager Andy Hessentahler’s side  a deserved three points on the opening day of the National League season.

Dover started brightly and another debutant, striker Ade Azeez, saw his dangerous cross just evade the onrushing Munns.

The Magpies replied with Cal Roberts, who was a doubt for the game, saw his shot saved by Yusuf Mersin before Richard Brindley’s effort was deflected wide.

Steven Rigg tried his luck from distance just before half-time but his effort sailed wide.

Rigg then saw his header from Munns’s excellent cross well save by the keeper just after the break.

The second half looked more open than the first and Roberts went close for the visitors yet again after beating his man and shooting just wide.

Kyle Wootton then went close after the ball was played in from the corner, however his turn on the volley went wide.

Substitute Bilel Hinchiri saw his overhead kick go over before Ransom sealed the points with a thunderous header that crashed into the net off the underside of the bar.

Earlier in the day, Hessenthaler gave competitive debuts to new captain Sam Wood, TJ Bramble, Ransom, Azeez and Marvel Ekpiteta.

HESS MAKES HIS MOVE

Manager Andy Hessenthaler has reinforced his squad with four new signings ahead of today’s National League season opener against Notts County at Crabble.

Former Newport County striker Ade Azeez and Macclesfield Town central defender Marvel Ekpiteta both arrive on permanent deals, while another central defender, Harry Ransom, arrives on loan from Championship side Millwall.

Dover Athletic Academy starlet, Will Moses, a centre half, completes the new arrivals.

Azeez, who will wear the No.19 shirt, is no stranger to Dover fans, having played 12 games for us, scoring once, while on loan from Cambridge United during the 2017/18 season.

The Sidcup-born frontman left Newport in September after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent and he moved home to Kent.

Azeez started his career with Charlton Athletic and had loan spells with Wycombe, Leyton Orient, Torquay and Dagenham & Redbridge while with the Addicks.

The 26-year-old has also played for AFC Wimbledon and helped them win promotion out of League 2 in 2016 and played 46 games for Scottish Premiership side Partick Thistle in the 2016/17 season.

A move to League 2 Cambridge United followed before he joined Newport in January 2019.

Marvel, 25, the twin brother of Blackpool defender Marvin, joined Macclesfield Town from Newport County last month, but his time with the Silkmen was short-lived after the club was wound-up in the High Court over unpaid debts.

He joined Newport ahead of the 2019/20 season, making his professional debut in the EFL Trophy fixture against West Ham United under-23s.

Capped at under-20 level by Nigeria, Ekpiteta, who will be wearing number 20, spent much of last season on loan at Ebbsfleet United, making 25 appearances and scoring two goals.

Millwall under-23 captain Ransom made the move to the New Den from National League South side Eastbourne Borough in the summer of 2019.

Our new number 18 started his career at Brighton & Hove Albion before moving to Eastbourne at the age of 15.

He made his senior debut during the 2016/17 season and become the club’s youngest ever captain at 19.

Moses, who only turned 17 in May, has earned his contract after the Whitstable youngster continually impressed with his mature displays throughout pre-season and he will wear shirt number 21.

MATCH PREVIEW: WHITES VS NOTTS COUNTY

Whites open their 2020/21 National League campaign with a behind closed doors clash against Notts County at Crabble on Saturday.

Both teams tasted defeat in their final pre-season games with Dover losing 3-0 at Maidstone United while the Magpies were beaten at home by the same margin by York City.

Nothing could separate the two sides last season with both games finishing in draws, but manager Andy Hessenthaler’s line-up will have a very different look about it from the one that drew at Meadow Lane in January.

Just four of the starting side that day, Oscar Gobern, Steven Rigg, Will De Havilland and Josh Passley, remain at the club, along with Jack Munns and Paul Rooney, who were both substitutes.

Our opponents, who lost in the play-off final against Harrogate Town, have also had a summer of change with a number of players leaving the club, including Kristian Dennis, who scored 14 goals last season,  a total which included a last-minute equaliser in this corresponding fixture last October.

Notts Player to Watch

Forward Kyle Wooton was Notts’ top-scorer last season with 15 goals.
