WHITES BRING IN RUTHERFORD

*BS*Chris Kinnear has today added midfielder/striker Greg Rutherford to his squad. The ex-Hartlepool United man is available for selection for tomorrow’s FA Cup clash away at Eastbourne Borough.*BF*

Rutherford was born in North Shields, and started his career in the youth team of Hartlepool United on a two-year scholarship in the summer of 2010.

In April 2012, Rutherford was offered his first professional contract and made his professional debut in a 2–1 defeat to Chesterfield, coming on as a late substitute.

He signed a short-term deal in the summer of 2012 which was later extended in early January 2013.

Rutherford scored his first ever professional goal after only being on the pitch for 90 seconds in a 3-1 away win against Portsmouth and totalled nine appearances for the senior side before being released at the end of last season.

He trialled with league rivals Bristol Rovers in pre-season after re-locating south.

*BS*England and Arsenal legend Ian Wright decided to take a boat to Wembley to feature the Mighty Whites in the latest part of his FA Cup series in The Sun newspaper.*BF*

Wrighty came down to the town for a a couple of pints of Guinness and fish and chips with chairman Jim Parmenter, media director Steve Parmenter and players Christian Nanetti and Sean Raggett.

Also as part of the double-page spread in the newspaper, they visited Chris Kinnear at his school in East London.

The Sun also shot a mini FA Cup documentary which can be viewed exclusively on their website.

Football writer Justin Allen organised the feature and said: “It is very apt for Ian to visit Dover. After all, we can run the headline “The Wright Cliffs of Dover!”

But, on a serious note, this is great coverage for our club and we face a very difficult game at Eastbourne. We are always happy to champion non-league football in the national Press.

Wrighty told doverathletic.com: “It was a great experience for me to come down to Dover. It is such a well-run club and sensibly done too.

“I played non-league and built so many friendships. This journey has reconnected me with what is real in football – and it’s teams like Dover and my former club Greenwich and Ten Em Bee.

“Thank you everyone for making me feel welcome.”

PREVIEW: EASTBOURNE AWAY

*BS*Dover Athletic make the short journey along the south coast to Conference South side Eastbourne Borough in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round on Saturday.*BF*

Whites suffered a 1-0 defeat in the Vanarama Conference at Macclesfield last Saturday courtesy of Paul Lewis’ third goal of the season. The loss leaves Kinnear’s men in 20th position.

The defeat to Macclesfield is the fourth time Dover have lost by a goal to nil this season.

The FA Cup game at Eastbourne provides an excellent opportunity for Dover to get their away record back on track, having not picked up a win away from Crabble since the 1-4 win at Telford on 6 September.

*Q1*Manager Chris Kinnear spoke about the FA Cup tie saying that the game will be far from easy for his team. He said: ‘It is not easy, but it could have been a lot worse. They are a good side with a decent manager’.

Ricky Modeste, Tyrone Sterling, Mitch Walker and Matt Lock are currently on the injury table for Dover and all those players will play no part against Eastbourne.

Striker Stefan Payne is set to continue up-front for Whites. He has scored three goals so far this campaign and is Whites top scorer with Ricky Miller returning to his parent club Luton Town.

Tommy Widdrington’s Eastbourne Borough, also known as the Sports, entered the FA Cup in the second qualifying round.

*Lpic1*They currently occupy sixth place in the Conference South and have only lost three times this season to date.

The Sports have been in fine form of late and are unbeaten in six games. They scored a last gasp equaliser away at Gosport Borough last Saturday to secure a 1-1 draw.

Midfielder Matt Aldred scored the equaliser in that game. He played last season in Whites’ 0-4 triumph at Priory Lane.

Defender Adam Watts is likely to unavailable due to an injury he picked up earlier in the season.

Club captain Ian Simpemba and striker Elliott Charles are two players that could start for the home side against their former club on Saturday.

Kinnear had this to say about coming up against ex White Simpemba. He said: ‘It will be good to see Ian Simpemba as well, he was a great Captain and we were disappointed when he left’.

*Ppic1*Gavin McCallum is the Sports top scorer so far this season with four goals. He is likely to start upfront with Richard Pacquette who has two goals to his name.

They needed penalties to see off Ryman Premier side Enfield Town and an injury time winner to edge past Kingstonian 2-3 which enables them to be in the fourth qualifying round.

Whites last visit to Priory Lane was exactly one year ago yesterday (22nd October) where Kinnear’s men thrashed the Sports 0-4. Tom Murphy, Ricky Modeste and a brace from Barry Cogan were amongst the goals.

Last season, Dover made it to the second round of the FA Cup having won all three qualifying round games against Guernsey, AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Oxford City.

They then beat Corby Town 1-2 in the first round proper and were rewarded with a trip to Stadium MK who they met in the second round.

Despite playing out a goalless first half in front of over 4000 fans, MK Dons narrowly beat Whites 1-0 which knocked Kinnear’s side out of the competition.

The Sports got knocked out by Ebbsfleet United in the third qualifying round last season, losing 2-0 at Stonebridge road.

*Lpic2*During the 2005/06 season, the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history, when a battling performance saw them hold League Two club Oxford United to a 1–1 draw.

The game against Oxford marked the first time that Eastbourne Borough played a fully professional league-side.

The last time Eastbourne made it to the first round proper was back in the 2007/2008 season. They lost 0-4 against Weymouth.
Admission for the game is £12 for adults, £8 concessions and under 16’s £1.

WYNTER: WE CAN REPLACE MILLER

WYNTER: WE CAN REPLACE MILLER

In spite of losing 5 goal hero Ricky Miller after parent club Luton recalled him from his loan spell, defender Tom Wynter is confident Whites have the quality to replace the player who had a massive impact in Dover’s recent upturn in form. ‘It is a big blow’ admitted Tom, ‘He was so sharp and was always desperate to score. He was a bit like Adam Birchall when he was here. But I think we will be ok as we have the personnel here like Elder, Reid and Modeste who are all chomping at the bit and just need some game time.’

Athletic played their first game without Miller away at Macclesfield on Saturday and narrowly lost to a second half goal with Wynter rueing an opportunity of missed points both home and away. ‘We should have beaten them at home and definitely got something out of the game on Saturday. Every point matters.’

He went on to say. ‘It was a nothing game with little between the two and it was some mistakes that led to their goal.’

After a spell on the sidelines, Wynter has put in some impressive performances since replacing Tyrone Sterling, who himself has succumbed to injury. ‘I have just come in and played my game and am just happy to be playing after training so hard to try and get back in. I still need to get match fit but I am finding it alright – Especially playing a Crabble at the moment, it is nice to be winning at home and pump up the crowd!’

There were various rumours as to why Dover’s longest serving player was out of the team, something that Tom was happy to clear up. ‘We are training three times and week and along with working 5 days a week, I was not getting enough time with my family and when I was with them I was knackered. It took a bit of time to sort out, but I am so grateful to Nick (Cunnigham) who has let me have Wednesdays off, which gives me a rest and lets me have quality time with my family. I am lucky he is a Dover fan!’*Q1*

Next up for Dover is a tricky cup tie against a familiar foe in Eastbourne Borough. ‘I like playing Eastbourne so I am looking forward to it and will be good to see Ian Simpemba. The cup means everything to us players as it gets us all noticed a bit more if we have a good run.’*Lpic1*
