TORQUAY 2-0 DAFC

TORQUAY 2-0 DAFC

*BS*Dover Athletic fell to their fourth consecutive Vanarama Conference Premier defeat at the hands of Torquay United but it could have been a different story had Ricky Miller not missed an open goal for Whites.*BF*

Aaron Downes headed the hosts in front before Connor Essam turned into his own net to give the high-flying Gulls their sixth victory on the bounce.

But just ten minutes before Torquay’s second goal, Miller spurned a golden opportunity for Dover after superbly rounding keeper Martin Rice but sidefooted his effort over with an empty net at mercy.

The defeat sees Whites – who were well supported by the excellent 96 away fans who made the 600-mile round trip to the Launa Windows Stadium – fall to 23rd in the latest league standings.

WHITES WELCOME THREE MORE

WHITES WELCOME THREE MORE

*BS*Dover Athletic tonight announce the signings of three players – goalkeeper Andrew Rafferty, defender Robert Gerrard and midfielder Matthew Saunders.*BF*

Chris Kinnear has moved to add the trio to his squad ahead of Saturday’s Vanarama Conference Premier trip to Torquay United.

All three highly-rated players will add to the competition for places within the side in an attempt to help the club rise up the league table.

*Ppic1**Link1* is a 26-year-old goalkeeper, who joins following his release from League Two side Hartlepool United. Born in Sidcup, Rafferty started his career at Darlington but left the club aged 16. Upon leaving, Rafferty had trials at Southampton, Reading and Wigan Athletic but a broken finger left him unable to sign. He went to play part-time for Crook Town and Horden Colliery Welfare before joining Guisborough Town in 2008 and in two seasons he made 49 appearances for the club picking up the Player of the Year award in both seasons.

Rafferty joined Hartlepool United in the summer of 2010. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Tranmere Rovers in April 2011.

At the end of last season, United offered Rafferty a new extended contract which he rejected in the search of first team football. Hartlepool rejected Rafferty’s request to be released and activated the option year in his contract for the 2014/15 season. Only one week into the season both parties agreed to mutually terminate the contract enabling Rafferty to join another club. Rafferty was linked with a number of Championship, League One and League Two Clubs.

*Link2* is a young left-back who joins after being released by fellow Conference Premier side Aldershot Town, and despite his natural position being down the left hand side, he is equally able to play at centre-back.

The defender came through Aldershot’s youth academy but was released earlier on this month.

*Lpic1**Link3* is a 25-year-old midfielder who made 41 appearances for League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge between 2012 and 2014, and joins the club as a free agent after leaving Whitehawk.

Saunders graduated from Fulham’s academy, and joined Lincoln City on loan, scoring three goals in 18 games.

On 10 February 2012, Saunders joined Dagenham & Redbridge on an 18-month contract. Manager John Still said: “He’s got terrific quality. He was a player we wanted to sign at the start of the season. He’s an all-action player who can pass, move and get around the pitch.”

In May 2014, Saunders departed Dagenham a year before his original contract expiry date when his contract was terminated by mutual consent. He then moved to Whitehawk and made two appearances.

The club would like to welcome Andrew, Robert and Matthew to the club.

*BS*Barry Cogan*BF* has joined Margate on a one-month loan deal, with *BS*Liam Bellamy*BF* joining Chelmsford City on loan – also for one month.

PREVIEW: TORQUAY AWAY

PREVIEW: TORQUAY AWAY

*BS*Dover Athletic make the 600-mile round trip to Devon as they face in-form Torquay United at the newly named Launa Windows Stadium in the Vanarama Conference Premier on Saturday.*BF*

Whites put in one of their best performances of the season at Dartford on Tuesday evening but walked away empty-handed *Link1* in an exciting Kent derby.

Two late goals from Harry Crawford and Tom Bradbrook won the game for the Darts after Ricky Miller’s early opener before Miller missed a penalty in injury time.

Dover fell in the bottom four as a result and face another tough test as they take on high-flying Torquay who currently occupy 2nd place in the league.

*Lpic1*Whites brought in three new players on Thursday – and one of them is former Hartlepool United goalkeeper Andrew Rafferty, who is set to replace Mitch Walker after Walker picked up an injury during Crawford’s equaliser at Dartford.

The other two new signings are defender Robert Gerrard and midfielder Matthew Saunders, who are both likely to feature at Torquay while Barry Cogan and Liam Bellamy will not take any part after joining Margate and Chelmsford City on loan respectively.

Their opposition Torquay were relegated to the Conference Premier last season after finishing bottom of League Two to end their 5-year stay in the Football League.

However, despite suffering an opening day defeat to Gateshead, the Gulls have remained unbeaten since and are on a current run of five consecutive wins.

Their latest victory was a 1-0 home win against Woking on Tuesday evening – a result which finally ended Woking’s impressive unbeaten start to the season.

They have also overtaken Barnet in the defensive charts after conceding only five times and are currently enjoying a run of keeping four consecutive clean sheets – not conceding in 466 minutes of football in the process.

The Gulls have scored 17 goals in their 10 games so far with Luke Young (4) and Ryan Bowman (3) sharing seven goals between them, which have earned the pair England C call-ups along with Whites keeper Walker as all three players will be named in a training squad ahead of the side’s International Challenge Trophy qualifiers against Turkey and Estonia.

The fixture will be the first time Dover and Torquay have met each other, before both sides meet each other again at Crabble on Tuesday 2 December.

*Lpic2*Despite the long-distance trip between both teams, Whites are expected to bring a number of away fans, with Nick Cunningham kindly donating towards the supporters’ coach while several fans are taking the option of enjoying a few days in the Devon town.

Cunningham’s generous contribution mean prices are just £15 for members and £20 for non-members – bookings are now being taken so *Link2* for more information on how to book your place on the coach.

Prices for away fans sitting in Bristow’s Bench are £21 adults, £17 concessions (aged 65+ and students with NUS), £10 ages 17-18, £6 ages 12-16 and just £5 for under 12’s as long as they’re accompanied by an adult.

Prices for Dover fans wishing to stand at the Popside terrace are £17 adults, £13 concessions (aged 65+ and students with NUS), £10 ages 17-18, £6 ages 12-16, £5 ages 7-11 and under 7’s go in for FREE as long as they’re accompanied by an adult.

The nearest rail station to the ground – previously known as Plainmoor – is Torre, which is a 20-25 minute walk up the hill opposite the station.

Driving directions are as follows:
1. At the end of the M5 follow the A38 and then turn left onto the A380.
2. On reaching Kingskerwell, take the first exit at the large roundabout (where there is a McDonalds and Sainsburys on one side) onto the A3022 towards Torquay.
3. After one mile turn left towards Babbacombe (singposted Babbacombe (A379)).
4. After one mile turn left into Westhill Road for Warbro Road – the ground is signposted on nearing it.
