BEES STING WHITES

BEES STING WHITES

Barnet lived up to their status of Conference leaders with a comprehensive victory over Whites at Crabble last night, running out 3-0 winners in front of the BT sport cameras.

Manager Chris Kinnear, though unhappy at losing, conceded that on this occasion the better team won. ‘There is no doubt the quality they have got’ said the manager. ‘We could have gone in front and Stefan (Payne) had a good chance to equalise as well. We also hit the bar a couple of times. It was just disappointing really, but we have to move on. *Q1*

As Dover continue to hover perilously close to the danger zone, Kinnear pointed out the fixture list has not been kind to his side thus far. ‘We have played six of the top eight in what has been a very, very difficult start. It has been a great learning experience, but we have to move on.’

Recent deadline day signings Connor Essam and Soloman Taiwo started, whilst Ricky Miller came off the bench in what was a difficult evening for the trio. Nonetheless, Chris is still pleased with his recent acquisitions. ‘They are decent players and we would not have signed them if we did not think so. It takes a while for them to bed in and get used to everything.’

Those three appear to have put his squad size over maximum capacity, but Kinnear is adamant he has the right number to cope with the demands of the next few months given the fact he will be unable to add to his ranks until January. ‘We do have quite a few, but saying that at Woking we had two YTS boys on the bench. Sometimes you think there are two many, but when you get a few injuries and suspensions you are then short. Again with the transfer deadline and not being able to sign anyone, we have to make sure we have signed people in case we need replacements.’

Fans will be looking to the next trio of games as prime opportunity to pull away from the bottom four, though Dover’s boss is warning caution against such thoughts,in particular looking ahead to the next game. ‘Macclesfield are eighth. They are an ex league club in a good catchment area and the type of team that lots of players want to play for. You can lose to anybody in this league and we are probably the least experienced side by far. We just have to make sure we keep on improving.’

Chris has nearly a fully fit squad with only winger Ricky Modeste missing due to injury. ‘We have missed Ricky’, said Chris. ‘He gives us a bit of pace down the one side and he runs past people – He has been very important since I have been here.’*Lpic1*

*BS*Dover Athletic take on current Vanarama Conference Premier leaders Barnet at Crabble in front of the BT Sport cameras on Wednesday evening.*BF*

*Link3* on Saturday as they came from a goal behind to thrash AFC Telford United 4-1 – their second win league of the season.

Tom Bonner’s header cancelled out Mike Phenix’s opener before Jake Reid’s double and a debut goal from Luton Town-loanee striker Ricky Miller secured the victory.

Dover’s emphatic win on Saturday comes at perfect timing as they look to bring in confidence against the Bees in their first live televised fixture since losing 1-0 at Stalybridge Celtic in the Conference in February 1998.

*Lpic1*Sean Raggett has completed his three-match suspension while Reid will be looking for his second start of the season after his brace at Telford helped Whites to their biggest win in this division since defeating Hayes by the same scoreline back in December 2000.

Another player in search for a place in the starting XI is Miller after his impressive cameo on Saturday, however his lack of match fitness means he may have to settle for a place on the bench again.

Barnet are currently enjoying their second season in the Conference Premier after they were relegated on goal difference on the final day of the 2012/13 League Two season.

The Bees finished 8th in their first season back at this level after Dutch legend Edgar Davids – whose clubs include Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus and Barcelona in an illustrious career – resigned as manager of the club by mutual consent in January.

*Lpic2*But they are eyeing a quick return to the Football League under former Gillingham manager Martin Allen, who have won six of their opening seven games of the season.

One of those wins includes a narrow 2-1 victory at the expense of rock-bottom Alfreton Town on Saturday while their only loss came against Lincoln City.

They are leading the goal-scoring charts after netting an impressive 18 goals, with strike trio Lee Cook, Charlie MacDonald and John Akinde – who once appeared as a trialist for Whites last season – sharing 14 goals between themselves.

They also currently hold the joint-meanest defence along with Kidderminster Harriers after conceding only three times – a record which has helped veteran keeper Graham Stack claim the Vanarama Conference Player of August award.

*Ppic1*The last meeting between the two sides saw *Link1* over Whites in the third round of the FA Trophy in the 2003/04 season, with Jamie Day and Tommy Tyne finding the net for Dover.

However, the result was later overturned after the Bees admitted fielding an illegible player, with Adam Campion cup-tied after already playing twice for Aylesbury earlier in the competition – meaning Barnet became the second club to be expelled from the FA Trophy in just four days that season.

Whites went on to defeat Forest Green Rovers in the next round after winning a replay before losing to eventual winners Hednesford Town.

The last league meeting between the two sides ended in a *Link2* at Crabble back in December 2001, with Jimmy Strouts cancelling out Frazer Toms’ opener before Jake Leberl – now assistant manager – put Whites in the lead but they were made to settle for a point after Steve Norman’s own goal.

Wednesday evening’s game at Crabble will be segregated for the first time this season – meaning Whites fans will be located at the River End.

PREVIEW: GRIMSBY AWAY

PREVIEW: GRIMSBY AWAY

*BS*Dover Athletic make the 512 mile round-trip as they travel to Grimsby Town in search of their first league points of the 2014/2015 season.*BF*

Whites suffered a *Link1* away at Braintree on Tuesday night courtesy of a double from Alan Massey and a James Mulley volley.

Manager Chris Kinnear feels Dover have competed well in the two games that they have played so far. *Link2*: “The two teams we’ve played against, I haven’t seen a side that’s been a better football team than us – they’ve just been stronger in both boxes.”

The Whites boss realises the importance of adapting to the Conference as quickly as possible. He said: “We’ve played two games, against the fifth and sixth placed sides last season, and there will be a lot of sides who don’t score against either.

“And the next game will be harder, against one of the favourites for the league but it’s good to get them out of the way.”

After the defeat on Tuesday night, Kinnear highlighted the importance of a quick recovery. He said: “We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, there’s no pointing fingers and having a go at the lads – it’s getting their heads up and preparing for the next game.”

There are reasons to be optimistic however, as Grimsby are also yet to find the net this season, plus the Whites had a fantastic away record last season winning 13 and losing just five.

*Lpic1*Matt Lock, who was injured for the Braintree game, could make a full recovery from injury and may feature against Grimsby.

Other than that, the Whites manager has a full squad to choose from for the clash at Blundell Park on Saturday afternoon.

Striker Stefan Payne made his debut for the Whites coming on as a second half substitute against Braintree and will offer plenty of pace up-front.

Grimsby were beaten 4-2 on aggregate to Gateshead in the playoff semi-final last season after finishing 4th in the league.

Last season was the second consecutive time Grimsby made the playoffs having dropped into the top tier of non–league football in the 2009/2010 season.

The Mariners had one of the meanest defences in the league last season. Only Braintree and the two promoted teams Luton and Cambridge conceded less.

Paul Hurst’s Grimsby have made a mixed start to their campaign drawing 0-0 with Bristol Rovers on the opening day in front of the BT Sport cameras. Town then drew another blank on Tuesday night at home to Nuneaton with the game finishing goalless.

*Lpic2*Grimsby have got a long list of players out either injured or suspended, but some of those who are injured may be fit and ready for the weekend.

American striker Jon-Paul Pittman and winger Nathan Arnold are still struggling with injuries which they both picked up in pre-season but could be fit for the big clash with Dover.

Last season’s top scorer Ross Hannah is a major doubt through injury. Hannah has played no part in neither of Grimsby’s first two league games.

Summer signing Jack Mackreth is likely to be fit after pulling his hamstring on the opening day draw with Bristol Rovers and could feature in the starting line-up.

Defender Shaun Pearson is available for selection after completing the last of his three match suspension on Tuesday night.

Other defenders Paul Bignot and Chris Doig have also been injured so far this season for the Mariners but could be fit for Saturday.

DR Congo international Aristote Nsiala also retuned for Grimsby in their last game against Nuneaton Town, after being sent off for his previous club Southport at the end of last season.

Mariners winger Scott Neilson is currently serving the last of his three match suspension and will be unavailable to play against Dover.

*Q1*This will be the first time Dover and Grimsby will meet in both clubs histories.

Whites fans will be located in the Osmond Corner stand at the South End of the ground behind the goal.

Prices for the match on Saturday are £18 for adults, £12 for senior citizens (65+) and young adults (ages 15-18) and £6 for juniors (ages 1-14). It is £2 cheaper if fans are able to get tickets before 1.30pm Saturday.

The closest train station to the stadium is New Clee which is approximately a 10-15 minute walk away from the stadium.

For fans driving to Blundell Park, take the M25 northbound, and then merge onto the M11, A14 in the direction of Peterborough. Take the A46 exit junction towards Lincoln/Newark. Then follow signs for Grimsby on the M180, continue on that road when it becomes the A180. The road runs right past the ground. The ground is adjacent to a McDonalds Drive-thru.
