WHAT THE PAPERS SAY

WHAT THE PAPERS SAY

*BS*WHEN was the last time Dover Athletic had two page leads in The Sun within two days of each other? Never!

*BF*But Rupert Murdoch’s top multi-million selling daily national newspaper got into the club’s cup fever on Saturday by billing the game as “the big Kent grudge match”.

Yet the club’s famous win got a cracking page lead in today’s Super Goals pullout – with the headline: “Dover the Moon” and picture of a jubilant Adam Birchall holding a black and white club banner as he celebrated with fans.

Birchall told Sun man Justin Allen: “I’ve been studying Wayne Rooney videos to improve myself as a player.”

And he was stinging in his criticism of Gillingham assistant Ian Hendon for chucking him on football’s scrapheap last year.

He said: “I needed encouragement and games – but I didn’t get that with Ian.”

Meanwhile, The Time’s Game pullout featured Dover as a page lead where Gary Polland wrote: “The game had all finest Cup ingredients, including a wonder goal to rival Ronnie Radford’s effort for Hereford against Newcastle in 1972.”

The Mail ignored us – but the News of the World and Mail on Sunday both gave the club page leads yesterday.

Hess is in a Mess, screamed the headline in the News of the World, while the Mail on Sunday reported that Gillingham had been beaten by “their neighbours from hell”.

BBC South East are running a feature on Dover in tonight’s news programme.

FA CUP: HOME DRAW

FA CUP: HOME DRAW

*BS*A home tie against Football League opposition is Whites’ reward for beating Gillingham 2-0 on Saturday.*BF*

Brentford or Aldershot will travel to Perrys Crabble on the weekend of November 27 and 28 (depending on possible TV scheduling).

Dover chairman Jim Parmenter celebrated Saturday’s result like all 2400 Whites’ supporters at Priestfield, and is delighted with Sunday’s draw.

Jim told doverathletic.com: “It’s great to get a home draw and I believe it is a winnable tie for us.

“Brentford are a very decent League One side and Aldershot are also a strong professional outfit but we have nothing to be scared of.”

Brentford won promotion from League Two as champions in 2009 and are establishing themselves as a very solid side at their new level. They also boast up and coming manager Andy Scott and ex Gravesend hotshot Charlie MacDonald.

Aldershot were promoted back into the Football League in 2008 after losing their professional status and club in 1992 due to bankruptcy. Fighting back up the divisions in the 1990s, the Shots made the League Two play-offs last season.

*Lpic1*Whites’ chairman believes the tie will capture the imagination of local football fans and should sway the television companies into covering the game live.

He said: “We’ve proven ourselves as FA Cup giantkillers, so hopefully the TV networks will recognise our game as one of the ties of the round.

“I believe we can fill the stadium for the first time in Dover Athletic’s history.”

FLITNEY'S HEROICS

FLITNEY’S HEROICS

*BS*Goalkeeper Ross Flitney left hospital to put in a man of the match display for Dover this afternoon, pulling off a string of top class saves in Whites’ 2-0 victory.*BF*

The former Barnet stopper shone throughout a famous victory for the club. A double save in the 2nd half kept Gillingham at bay during their brief period of domination.

His performance is made even more special due to the fact that he is suffering with an infection and requires surgery on his neck and knee.

Ross was in hospital on Friday night but made the trip to Gillingham and put in a faultless display. He now returns to hospital and hopes to play against Dartford at Perrys Crabble on Tuesday.

Flitney told BBC Radio Kent: “I’m going straight to hospital tonight for an operation on my neck and knee – bit of an infection which I’ve picked up in the week.

“I was in hospital last night. I put the operation off last night so I’ll be back there this evening trying to get right for Tuesday.”
